A young girl's journey to health

I read and loved this book as an adolescent. I recently saw it at the library and decided to take it out and read it again. I just finished re-reading it and found it as powerful as I remembered, possibly even more so.
I Never Promised You a Rose Garden presents a complete picture of mental illness from the patient's point of view, without the stigma of wrongness that is frequently associated with it. The picture painted is a very real one, from Deborah's relief when the doctors confirm what she's known all along, that something is not right, to the way her family deals with the fact of her illness. Greenberg/Green evokes very strong emotions with her writing. You feel Deborah's fear that her secret world of Yr will punish her for revealing its existence to her doctor, and you share in her triumph when she begins to make her way back to the world. I put down this book with a little more understanding of how it must feel to be mentally ill. I would recommend it to anyone, teen or adult.

A Peak in to the Disturbed - with a ticket out

The "plot" for this book follows the course of events that depict a person struggling with a form of mental illness. It is not constructed as a fictional book meant to keep you interested by plot twists and turns. Rather, it gives a real perspective on how someone can struggle with their issue but find a way to deal with it using the help of a competent psychiatrist. For a peak into that world, this book is now a classic.

a compelling book

This is perhaps the fourth or fifth time I've read this book in the past forty years. It's been over twenty-five yrs since the last time. Although I've ordered Ms Greenberg's first novel, I've never read anything else of hers. When I first read it I could not believe it was not a true story, and indeed it turns out it just a thinly veiled story of Ms Greenberg's own story. It is almost impossible to put down.

There is so much in this book that speaks to those who have never been diagnosed with a mental illness. It is a good way for many to have a better understanding of schizophrenia - a schizophrenia different from Sybil or Eve White/Black, but still similar. Frankly anyone going into psychiatry should be required to read this book.
I don't know if I'll ever read it again, but it has always been a book which left me profoundly affected.

In order to call themselves good Christians, many people have drawn overly flexible boundaries (unwilling to say no, always accommodating others' needs) or overly rigid boundaries (to the point of being righteous and judgmental). Psychologists and inspirational speakers Cloud and Townsend show readers how to set reasonable boundaries in order to follow the true path of Christianity. This book has become immensely popular, most likely because it makes personal boundaries easier to define and is filled with spiritual purpose. Some cautions: the format can be overly self-helpish for such a complex discussion and the authors at one point imply that judicious spankings may be an acceptable form of setting boundaries with children. However, many Christians will probably find themselves grateful for this biblical context of boundaries. --Gail Hudson

Turning my life around

As a Christian, I continually struggled with feeling depressed from being a doormat, and being nice because it was "part of the abundant Christian life." Everyone spoke about Christianity as being a joyful, full life that I would love and never want to return to the secular world. Then why did I feel so miserable? Why did the secular world seem so appealing, where I could be as nasty and selfish as I wanted to?
The answer was in "Boundaries". As I read the book, I could identify with something in every chapter. I'm the type of person who will let everyone else step all over me to keep themselves happy. As long as I didn't raise a ruckus, and the peace was kept, everything was okay, right? WRONG! Inside I was always seething with anger, and I was livid with the fact that I had to continually step out of the way for everyone else while they ran right over me.
Through reading this book, I realized that it's OK to set boundaries in all interactions; in fact, I now believe that it would be wrong NOT to set boundaries in things. Slowly but surely, with the help from this book's message, I've been setting boundaries for a happier life that's filled with more peace, joy, and abundance than ever.

This Book--> The Pencil That Will Help You Draw the Lines

Wow, why didn't I ever know about this book? You don't hear much about it- I stumbled upon it browsing around Amazon one day. For people wondering if they should buy this book, get it if:

-you're not turned off by a Christian writing approach
-you feel like there's a problem because you're trying to be a good person all the time by always saying "yes"

In a nutshell, this book is for people who don't know how to set boundaries for themselves. In other words, they're always saying "yes" to things and taking responsibility for things- even when it's not their job.

And boundary lines of your responsibilities need to be present in more areas of your life than you might realize, such as...

-your family
-your friends
-your mate
-your kids
-your self

The book covers boundary conflicts in each of these areas leaving no stone unturned. Therefore, its no big deal if you have only one or two problem areas- just go to those sections.

This book will help you realize what a boundary is, why it's okay to have them and just how to develop them. So if anything in this review sounds like if might apply to you- don't hesitate to check out the book. Other neat self-help books I liked include "Finding Happiness in a Frustrating World".

Very good book.... even for an atheist like me

This book is truly excellent. In my own childhood I grew up with a domineering, imposing and dare I say it "bullying" father and a meek, mild, "anything for a quiet life", sweet as honey mother. I resented my Dad for riding roughshod all over my Mum as a kid but have learned as an adult how they both are responsible. With time I began to resent Mum for being such a wimp as well as my Dad for being a control freak. Now I just love them to pieces, because they are my dear parents.

Anyway, I grew up to be a controlling, abusive tyrant, just like my Dad was if not worse. This persisted until 2008 when the beautiful, adoring woman I married got tired of my treatment of her and left me. I would never have woken up, let alone **grown** up if she hadn't done this. With a lot of time and work from my side we got back together again and the type of "man" I used to be really disgusts me. With time and effort I have been able to put together healthy boundaries of behaviour I will and will not accept from others, and from myself.

The point is my wife took a stand, just as this book says to. And it worked. On me that is.

If you are an abused spouse take a radical stand. The more radical the better. Do exactly what this book tells you to do.

I have given the book four stars because I am an atheist (sorry to any religious folks, I just cannot believe any of it, even if I wanted to) and my "God filter" had to be on at all times. Still, it doesn't matter what source the help comes from and I wish I had come across this book five years ago. My two little kids will learn healthy boundaries as well so they don't grow up to be the basket case I was.

The best book for Survivors.

My copy of Mike Lew's book is well worn, most pages have sections underlined and notes written down the margins.

A lot of pages are stained with coffee, red wine and tears.

It's a book I still read a lot, five years after I first got it.

I am a Survivor of sexual abuse, and have recovered my life through therapy, and some hard personal work. But the personal work was so much easier with this remarkable book.

Mike Lew's understanding of 'our' problems is second to none and he expresses himself very clearly throughout the book. Don't think that this is just a book for professionals, it isn't. This is a book for everyone concerned with men who have been sexually abused.

I now work with other Survivors, and I always recommend this book to them, which is why I'm here at Amazon again; buying yet another copy so someone else can benefit.

five stars isn't enough for this

Mike Lew's book is the definitive book on recovery for males from childhood sexual abuse. When I first bought it, I was not even able to open it to the blurb page without feeling that finally, there was something that I could use to help...finally there was someone who cared. The book is hard to read. Hard, hell, it is, at times, nearly impossible, but it is also hopeful. Mike Lew is sure to include positive messages directed at the survivor, messages of encouragement and hope. I found myself with tears in my eyes as I saw my story and my life on every page, but I now know that I will survive. If you need this book, first get yourself into therapy, then get this book and take all the time you need with it. Don't rush through it.

Excellent overall, but skip the first two sections

This is a very delicate subject, and I doubt I'm the only one working on a DIY recovery for something that really should involve professional support. This is exactly the book that we need. It covers all of the common effects and many recovery strategies. Written by a psychotherapist, it carries the DNA of the academic and therapeutic communities, but is written in an accessible and jargon-free style that makes it useful for the rest of us.

Unfortunately, the preface, introduction and first section of the book are of little interest, and most of the second is a feminist critique of masculinity that would be right at home in a modern university setting but is unhelpful or even a little offensive to those of us who have already had our masculinity attacked in the most personal way possible.

There is a "media analysis" of masculine stereotypes that makes you wonder if the author has owned a TV set in the last 30 years. The Marlboro man was replaced by dimwitted sitcom dads long ago, and if anybody knocks someone out in a fight these days on TV it will be a beautiful but impossibly strong woman cold-cocking a huge but moronic man. There is the "gender is cultural" trope that is supposed to encourage us to embrace our feminine sides. Not now, thanks. Maybe not ever. And there is the chapter, "Our Debt to the Women's Movement" just in case the point was not driven home sufficiently.

My advice to anyone who is not an ardent feminist is simply to start on page 40, where most of the political correctitude is replaced with genuine insight and helpful advice. It will avoid getting a bad start.

Excellent training book

This book was recommended to me by my drum teacher. There are excellent drills or patterns in this book which are great for beginners and expert players as well. My only complaint (as with nearly all music books) is that it should be spiral bound. Bound books (which are hard to keep open on music stands) should have no place in music libraries.

Stupendous purchase!

A must have for every working drummer! Some unusual drum styles presented. All drum grooves presented in clear, concise large print. Very useful for the versatile drummer working a variety of gigs-Neat Book! Very similar to "Drumset Grooves" written by Patrick Riley. I like Riley's book just a little bit better because of the format.

As late as the 1970s, among the Tzutujil Indians of Santiago Atitlan, in Guatemala, there was no word for "time," and the concept closest to the verb "to be" was the state of "belonging to"?in this case, to their village, which these descendants of ancient Mayans believed was the center of the universe. At the core of their philosophy was a rejection of progress?everything of importance had happened in the past. Their religion, which relied on communion with animal and plant spirits to understand daily existence, appealed deeply to Prechtel, a half Native American who grew up on a Pueblo reservation near Santa Fe: "The new aromas, the new sounds, things that I'd never seen before, spun me into a trance, amplifying my already well-established erotic relationship with the landscape, my verdant quest to find a way to merge and mate with the spirit of the world." In his engaging first book, Prechtel describes his apprenticeship to Nicolas Chiviliu Tacaxoy, a shaman who taught him healing and divination skills, and his 13 years living as a Tzutujil. While his view seems at times romanticized, the picture he creates of idyllic Indian life?of the Indians' well-being, colorful rituals and rapport with nature?is so beautifully drawn that his delight in their culture becomes contagious, as does his grief when civil war creates havoc in their village.

Brings the Reader deep within the village truths

An amazing book, filled with insights and deeply wise. I particularly appreciated the honesty that allowed us to grow in understanding through following Prechtel's errors and misunderstandings... a deeply moving memoir. Strongly recommended for anthropologists and shamanic practitioners alike - there are learnings for all.

Anyone with an interest in indigenous people as well as a lust for fascinating accounts of wayward travellers will find this impossible to put down. Humorous, yet poetic at times, the writer has a gift to share, and he does so with incredible dexterity. The insights into how the Maya lived within nature, their social heirarchy, inside jokes, love of life, and slow victimization by 20th (and 21st) century power-mongers make this account a valuable resource for all human beings.
Interestingly, the Mayan calendar, put forth centuries ago, ends within this decade, fodder for Armegeddon-theorists in the last half century. Prechtel's book helps to explain how this happened before his eyes and the role he has come to play in keeping the soul of the Maya alive.

This should be a must-read for anthropologists, linguists, spiritualists, environmentalists, economists, missionaries of all faiths, travellers, and policy makers. And yet with such a broad base, it remains a fascinating narrative as well. This was unquestionably one of the best books I have ever read.

Francis X. McConville holds a BS degree in Chemistry and MS degrees in both Biotechnology and Chemical Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute. He has worked in the chemical industry and related fields for more than 26 years, including 14 years as a process engineer at Sepracor, Inc. He has helped scale up chemical and biochemical processes in Asia, Europe and North America. He now operates a consulting business and lives with his family in Worcester, Massachusetts. He also dabbles in watercolor and plays bluegrass and jazz mandolin in several central New England acoustic bands.

Teaching everything for successful pilot plant operation

"Pilot plant real book" to be exact; "Pilot Plant Bible" not an exaggeration.

I felt lucky to get a copy of this book BEFORE setting my foot into pilot plant. I found it extremely useful in transitioning into pilot plant operations from R&D laboratory environment. For these two, many things are same in principles but different in real operations. The book teaches everything: reactors, fittings, material compatibility, pumping, heat exchange, distillation, recrystallization, etc. In doing so it truely helps practitioners to sacel up reactions successfully and safely. I used it as a textbook initially to learn pilot plant operations and it is for sure a wonderful reference book as well.

This book is a must have for any working chemical engineer, chemist or chemical technician in the pharmaceutical industry. The author has compiled a tremendous amount of information that is easily accessible and applicable to practical chemical development. The author shares his professional and academic knowledge and experience by depicting and analyzing methodologies, Data Mining best practices along with real world applications across several industries, demystifying the usage of Data Mining models and clarifying all the methodological issues. It is an extremely didactic practical book that combines Data Mining and Business knowledge, providing all the necessary information for designing, setting up, executing and deploying Data Mining techqniues in CRM.

I would absolutely recommend it because it offers all the necessary theoretical and practical knowledge on Data Mining techniques in a very detailed and easy to read way and actually bridges the gap between science and decision making.

An Innovative Book for Predictive Analytics Applications

The scope of the book is to be an applied guide instead of another generic reference book on data mining and CRM. And in my opinion it certainly succeeds. Data mining algorithms are presented in plain English for business users, along with detailed roadmaps for applying predictive analytics in every-day marketing. And all the above with illustrative examples and the use of popular software tools.

The last part of the book features realistic case studies from banking, retail and telecoms. Given the level of detail and the companion site material, the presented case studies can be used as application templates.

In spite of not covering some recent trends and algorithms, the book is definitely a 5-star and a must-have for marketers and data mining practitioners.
