The book begins by presenting the theory of holographic imaging, the characteristics of the reconstructed image, and the various types of holograms. Practical aspects of holography are then covered (including optical systems, light sources, and recording media), as are the production of holograms for display, colour holography and computer-generated holograms. A variety of the applications of holography are then discussed in detail, such as high-resolution imaging, holographic optical elements, information storage and processing, and holographic interferometry, including vibration analysis and holographic interferometry with photorefractive crystals. This book is a great overview of all the different methods of using and making holograms. It has extensive references. It assumes the reader has a mathamatical background. I refer to it more than any other holography book in my library.

One review for this volume was complaining about Viz's translation of it. I'm here to address the points he made.

1. Shinigami, which does mean Death God, isn't exactly a good description of what they do. The name they're given in English, Soul Reaper, is a much better name as it fits what they do, which is guide the souls of the dead to the afterlife.

2. There is no language censorship. The Japanese language actually has no swear words, and words also have several meanings. The version he read was an illegally translated copy called a scanlation, in which they translate words very, very literally and out of context. They also have a tendency to translate adjectives as swears because it's easier. The reviewer apparently didn't know that a "company" is subdivision of a military regiment or battalion that constitutes the lowest administrative unit that is usually under the command of a captain and is made up of at least two platoons, which is more correct than squad.

Quincy Archer... hardly appears

After the bleak, rainy misery that suffuses most of the third volume of Tite Kubo's "Bleach," the fourth volume "Quincy Archer Hates You" is a deliberately lighthearted affair -- crazy spiritualists, frog-Hollows, and stuffed-animal drag. But Kubo turns the intensity back on in the last few pages, even as he introduces a mysterious new character.

After Ichigo and Rukia demonstrate their eccentric cleaning methods, Kon decides to go in search of someone who will "cherish" him as he thinks he deserves. He stalks Orihime, tries to charm some of Ichigo's female classmates, and is finally rescued by Yuzu. Turns out being cherished is overrated.

Then the hit ghost-hunting show "Spontaneous Trips" comes to Karakura, much to Ichigo's disgust. But while he and Rukia are watching from the live audience, they witness flamboyant host Don Kanonji turning a basic ghost into a Hollow. Now Ichigo must somehow destroy the Hollow in an abandoned hospital, without endangering the audience -- and while dealing with the kooky Kanonji.

That broadcast causes some problems for Ichigo -- as well as his good grades -- but he's more preoccupied with the false alarms. Every time Rukia gets a Hollow alert, it turns out to be a dud. And unbeknownst to Ichigo, a mysterious bespectacled young man is watching him from a distance...

"Bleach Volume 4: Quincy Archer Hates You" has a somewhat deceptive title -- the character in question doesn't appear until the last chapter, and we don't find out anything about him until the last few pages. Pretty obviously the real info is coming in the chapters to come.

Instead, Kubo provides readers with a calm spot between supernatural storms, and has some fun with lighthearted stories about Kon in frilly dresses and bonnets ("Did he get into some weird scene while he was gone?") and a slightly mad ghost-hunter who drives Ichigo even madder. Our lanky hero's expression of mingled nausea and disgust is hilarious.

That, and we get Keigo causing massive trouble when he learns that Ichigo isn't as dumb as he thought ("While we were out having fun like idiots, you were locked in your room learning! YOU WEIRDO! NERD!"). There are a few serious moments -- such as Don Kanonji realizing where the "mean spirit" came from -- but the overall mood is lighthearted.

And without much of a serious storyline, it's a chance for the characters to lighten up and goof around -- Rukia in particular enjoys the live shoot a little too much, and allows herself to be bribed with rice dumplings. And we find out that not only is Ichigo way smarter than most of the people around him, but he really, really hates "Ghost Hunter"-style shows. Oh, and a few of his pals are suddenly able to hear Hollows -- which is pretty portentous.

"Bleach Volume 4: Quincy Archer Hates You" doesn't have much to do with the Quincy archer, but it's a nice diversion before the next bloody, action-packed adventure.

Could have been better, but it's ok overall

This book isn't as great for beginners as previous reviewers have said. It's just that it's better than many of the other "beginners" books, which appear to have been written by people who are so deep into the subject they've forgotten what it's actually like to be a beginner.
The authors claim to be aiming for simplicity, and ask beginners to read chapter-by-chapter, but a number of times I've found that they reference material from chapters well advanced into the book. This is particularly noticeable in the "Self-Test" and "Try This" sections at the end of each chapter.
Although great additions, it's really frustrating to thoroughly read a chapter and then be given a "Self-Test" or asked to "Try This" - with an example of something you haven't read, and won't encounter for another 2 or three chapters. It's frustrating and makes you feel like giving up. A better proof-read, or better feedback from actual beginners may have picked these issues up. So, it's far from perfect but none of the 'beginners' books are. But, if you can get over those issues, which in the scheme of things are quite minor, this is indeed a useful guide to starting out in HTML/CSS.

This guide is a good place to start if you want to learn the basics of HTML. You learn about links, images, working with multimedia and much more, not to mention what exactly is HTML.

good beginner's book

this book was a good beginner's html book. if you're coming from a programming background though, you'll be able to tell that it was not written by a programmer (which she herself admits to). but that's okay, since you end up learning the subject material anyway.

i had to subtract a star because there were some misstatements (e.g. writing 'attribute' instead of 'property') and quite a few code mistakes, as another reviewer pointed out.

i don't agree with the 2 star reviews. this book is a lot better than that.

A great book for hotel lovers

This is my first review of a book for Amazon. I just had to write this to tell the truth about this book.
For a person who loves to travel, I just had to purchase this book to see what places I need to go to and review places I have been to.
According to the author, I missed a lot of places because I was too busy to vistit all the recommended 5 star hotels. For an example, Torres Del Paine, Chile is one of the most beautiful nature wonder of the world with its glaciers, lakes, peaks, and majestic views. Instead of writing this, the author decide to descibe in detail about the over-priced hotel in the park.
Author consistently writes about:
1. Hotel, hotel, and more hotels. Not just any hotel, but the most expensive accomodation in town.
2. Hotels, of course. I have not counted, but I can guess about 250 places to see are hotels.
If you like hotels, this is a book for you, otherwise look elsewhere.

Not bad ... for a to-do list

I was prepared to really dislike this book, if for no other reason than because it takes one of my passions -- travel -- and reduces it to a kind of grocery list. Travel, I have always thought, is about experiencing a different culture and its history and not about checking the most important cathedral or museum in a city off a to-do list.
But I must admit this small-but-thick book intrigued me. Most of the criticisms of something like this will be of specific choices the author makes: How could she overlook X? Or what was she thinking when she included Y? And while I admit that I scratched my head at a few curious omissions and chuckled at some of the choices that did make the cut, I must say that overall, the selection is very good. Every traveler or would-be traveler will find selections of interest on its pages, whether they are looking for luxury or natural beauty or history or art or culinary masterpieces or thought-provoking journeys.
But I think the real strength of 1,000 Places to See Before You Die is author Patricia Schultz' lively writing. Ms. Schultz has a real gift for description, and her love and enthusiasm for the places she writes about at once manage to excite the reader about the place being described and to give him or her a small taste of it before even diverting the eyes from the page.
All that said, I would be disappointed to scan someone else's copy of this book and see places that have been already visited crossed off in red ink or to discover that future trips were being planned to maximize the number of the 1,000 places that can be visited in a short time. I don't think the book should be used like that, but rather as a means to provoke thought and conversation regarding the best of what the world has to offer us by giving us the views held by one person (albeit someone who is extremely well traveled and with unusual writing talent). We'll all come up with our own lists in our heads, lists that may or may not overlap with the contents of this book. And that's something worth being passionate about.

A great choice for the traveling grandpa

If grandma and grandpa are getting bored in retirement, this is a fantastic book to buy them. If *you* are looking to explore the world, consider a Lonely Planet or guide better geared at the under-65 crowd.
Certainly people would quibble with my list of 1000 places, but here is why I believe this book is not appropriate for anyone who doesn't get an AARP discount:
- Euro-american focus. The book is almost insulting in its lack of coverage of Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. For instance, there is nothing listed in Delhi except a restaurant vs. nine sites in over-touristed Morocco. There is virtually nothing in places not covered by travel guides, such as Central Asia and almost anywhere in Africa that doesn't have pyramids or characters from "The Lion King." Iraq is the cradle of civilization, but apparently UFOs in Roswell and Disney theme parks are more important. At least Schultz acknowledges the bias, saying that places like Kolkata and Madagascar are "arduous choices."
- Cultural insensitivity. Schultz's use of the most anglicized names possible and long-replaced colonial monikers (like Calcutta and Laotian for Kolkata and Lao) makes her occasionally sound like Mr. Burns asking for "the Prussian consulate in Siam."
- Intended for traveler-writers with unlimited budgets. Despite claiming with a straight face that she's "never a travel snob," Schultz typically choses the most expensive way to see a place. I am a travel snob, but sometimes Schultz's recommendations of tours are too outrageous even for me. For instance, Ayuthaya, Thailand, is easily reached by a comfortable air-con first class bus from Bangkok for 95 cents, but Schultz recommends a $390 tour.
- Questionable rationales. Schultz gives the Toronto Four Seasons an entry because, well, celebrities have stayed there. Never mind that the Toronto Four Seasons is potentially the most shabby, cramped, and run-down property in the chain. I have certainly never seen it on a list of Four Seasons's top properties, and the food was nothing spectacular. Entries like that make me wonder if Schultz is holding back the truly great establishments.

About the Author
Not much is known about Armando Torres. As a student of journalism in Mexico City he used to attend public talks given by Carlos Castaneda, anthropologist and author, about his long apprenticeship with don Juan Matus, a sorcerer-seer he met during his field study of the use of psychotropic plants among the Sonoran Yaquis. Although Castaneda’s training required him to shun close relationships with the uninitiated, Torres became his friend and confidant, as well as the foretold bearer of the Rule of the Three-Pronged Nagual. He described his experiences in his first book, “Encounters with the Nagual: Conversations with Carlos Castaneda”. Remaining elusive, Armando Torres lives and practises with a group of healers-seers at an unknown location in rural Mexico.

Fantastic

I began reading Armando Torres after having gone through the whole Castaneda corpus. Unfortunately, Torres' first book is no longer in print, although PDFs are available. This is Torres' second book.

Armando Torres' two books can be considered a miniature version of Castaneda's don Juan saga, providing much-needed corroboration of Castaneda's claims, and bringing in a few fresh insights as well. Castaneda's books, for example, do not discuss food and dietary habits, or healing techniques. Here we have chapters dedicated to these matters, and many other things as well.

The book has a peppy style, with short chapters (some as small as three or four pages) coming on in quick succession. They cover dreaming, stalking (Torres' lineage calls it "acting"), the energy body, the double, the definitive journey, and stories of ancient sorcerers in the nagual or toltec tradition.

The book may only be a curiosity to people unfamiliar with Castaneda, but it's a fantastic treat for Castaneda fans. And there are some great insights in here for people interested in healthy eating, alternative medicine and spritual healing, and astrology.

Corroborates Carlos Castaneda's accounts

Armando Torres corroborates everything Castaneda said about the Toltec path -- but from the viewpoint of another party of sorcerers. Torres met CC in Mexico on many occasions and his first book (out-of-print) has descriptions of his conversations with CC. This second book (Secret of the Plumed Serpent) also has some of his history with Castaneda, but then goes on to talk about his own apprenticeship with a sorcerer/man of knowledge/seer name Melchor and his party of sorcerers. Anybody who lives by the Castaneda oeuvre will be interested in these two books.

The World wasn’t Ready for the Genius of Tesla

This book should be required reading in schools. Authors Margaret Cheney and Robert Uth created a masterpiece on the life of Nikola Tesla, in my opinion the greatest mind the world has ever known. From his youth in (what is now) Croatia until his final days in New York City, all of the important events, discoveries, letters, inventions and diagrams are included. The fantastic photographs alone are worth getting this book; they are plentiful throughout adding a tangible nature to things that happened so long ago and are so difficult for the average person to comprehend, like wireless transmission of energy.
I cannot fathom how Tesla’s mind worked and probably never will, but my appreciation for Tesla and what he did for modern humanity is unsurpassed. I find him the most fascinating human who ever existed (aside perhaps only Jesus Christ). And the part that hurts the most is that Tesla did so much for us yet was constantly held back because he was way too far ahead of his time. He was purposeful hindered and disregarded by those in power who either didn’t want to see him succeed (Edison) or didn’t see the profit in what he was proposing (Morgan et al).
If those in power had only listened to Tesla and followed him, the world would be even more amazing than it has become because of his inventions. We could have had free, sustainable, environmentally-friendly energy worldwide. We could have had electric cars for over 100 years. We could have had a planet without war. We could have had so much that we can barely imagine. Unfortunately the world was not ready for Tesla in 1900, and sadly it is still not ready for his ideas.
I pray that Tesla’s own prophecy comes to fruition: that the future will be his. To say he was unappreciated during his time is gross understatement. I pray humankind of the future will learn to implement his ideas, though I’m not sure our brightest minds working together today could even understand what Tesla knew well over 100 years ago.
Tesla’s was the most amazing lifetime I have ever heard of. I’m so grateful to the authors for putting this wonderful book together. I want everyone to read it and know better the mind and astounding achievements of Nikola Tesla, the world’s premier genius.

Master of Lightning

Tesla was a very interesting, but troubled genius. This is the 2nd book I have read on Tesla and offers great insights into the man. An easy and worthwhile read. Contrary to the content of some other volumes on Tesla, this one does not require any level of technical knowledge. Lots of photos. This is an older book on the subject...while it is still available, it will have been on the shelf for a while and the jacket may look slightly abused.

My Favorite Inventor

This is an easy and interesting read. I reminds me of when I was a kid and my dad read books about the wright brothers and amelia earhart to me. This book would be a great book to read with and older kid. Tesla definitely got me interested in engineering and electricity, do yourself a favor and introduce your daughter to these disciplines.

Great book. One minor but glaring error...

Great information and a great read. I like the writing style , sort of how a smarter colleague might instruct you. The authors have the thoracic inlet mixed up with the thoracic outlet and it made tough for me to figure out what the heck they were talking about until I figured they got it backwards. Please, please fix it on the next edition. The thoracic inlet is the little hole at the top of the chest and the thoracic outlet is the big hole at the bottom of the chest

I thoroughly enjoyed this book not for the "how to do it"aspects of the book but for the "why to do it this way at this point in time" aspect. As the authors point out, much of trauma surgery is time critical, and options are often limited. Surgical decision making at this juncture is the factor that often leads to success or failure - Hirshberg and Mattox succinctly list options and the reasons for following one line of attack instead of another given different circumstances. The book is almost flippant in its language on many occasions, and for those of us who have done time at Ben Taub know that this is not in character for either author, for whom the art and craft of surgery is deadly serious. The apparent flippant tone introduced into the book allows the authors to provide emphasis in a way that a chart or graph wouldn't - fluently and with humour. The book is presented in the way that a mentor may review a case in the surgeons lounge - simply, clearly, and with relevance. This is an extremely useful book for those involved with trauma surgery, and I hope to see new editions of this book at regular intervals.

To the point on trauma

This is the most entertaining surgical textbook I have ever read! It is straight to the point, pointing out practical solutions and a practicable way of thinking. It is focused on strategy and tactics, not on technical and anatomic details. I will heartly recommend this book to all surgeons who deal with trauma and are not already experienced trauma surgeons. (For the experienced trauma surgeon this will probably good entertainment as well.)

Great Historical Value

The book has a great historical value. It explains the theoretical basis of the simplified methods implemented in most modern design codes. The emphasize is on strength design based on Yield Line method. But, nowadays slab design is governed by the serviceability criteria, rather than strength. The serviceability design is not well covered, which makes this book not very useful. It is an interesting book, but it is not very practical and it is not very relevant to the modern design practice.

13 Art Techniques Children Should Know is about art techniques from around the world. There are instructions in the book on some of the techniques. For instance, the chapter "Burning the Midnight Oil" shows you how to put oil on the canvas.

The good thing about this book is that it explains the art and has a timeline of when the art was made. It also has interesting facts. For instance, did you know that you can make watercolors from plants? This book tells you how.

Because of the difficulty of the sentences, this book is best for boys and girls ages eight to adult.

This is a lovely, informative book. Families and homeschoolers would definitely benefit from looking through and discussing each technique before a visit to the art museum! It gives children a fine overview of style and materials used in famous works of art. Even adults will find interesting ideas and facts that they did not know.
I purchased this to give as a gift with an art kit. The book has exceeded my expectations! I have especially loved using the timelines that appear with each technique presented. It is a wonderful way to teach and understand where something is placed in history.
The book is hardbound and nicely made. We do love this book and will use it for some time to come. I also plan to purchase other books in this series.
