No fluff guide to optimizing MySQL queries

The size of this book is deceiving -- it is packed with many time more information per its 160 some pages than many other books that cost much more. The sections on indexes are a must read for anyone using MySQL. The examples on using EXPLAIN are perfect someone needed into the art of tuning queries.

The first chapter, 'The 5 Minute DBA' should be required reading. Too many DBAs do not know how to delve into their systems to find or confirm problems. The three chapters on index are as clear and lucid on the subject as I have found.

So if you are new to MySQL query tuning or an old hand looking for a very clean explanation of the art, this is the book to get.

A great practical book

This is a book where the author experience and his practical approach shows right from the beginning, and keeps up to the expectations till the end.
Contrary to a trend that wants technical books to be bulky and heavy, this one is short, and to the point. That doesn't mean the book lacks information. On the contrary, the topic is treated extensively and completely. Not only that, the book is organized in such a way that it becomes a handy guide to anyone dealing with MySQL queries.
As the title says, it's "Effective". I look forward to get more books in the same series.

It works as a dinosaur reference, but if you are looking for something a little more in depth, you might consider looking elsewhere. Perhaps you might consider Robert T. Bakker's Dinosaur Heresies or Dinosaur Odyssey. The weren't as many colored pictures as I would have liked, but those that were in the book more than made up for this deficiency. All in all, this is a pretty solid book on those amazing creatures called dinosaurs.

This book was exactly what I was searching for!

This is a perfect first book for learning about dinosaur breeds, what period they're from, how to pronounce their names and what they mean, their statistics, and their discovery history. It gives an easy and organized visual to help break all these things down so it's not a boring read. I'd suggest it for most people who love learning about these creatures and wanting to extend their knowledge in dinosaurs. I would not suggest it however if you have started a dinosaur library and are already pretty knowledgeable in them. It's definitely a beginner's guide - comparable to a 101 college class let's say. I attached an example of a page about a dinosaur to see the layout (my favorite dinosaur too!).

Excellent volume, including many species only announced in the last two years. Great reference for the many species that have been discovered. While not all known dinosaus are included, nor could they realistically fit in one volume, those missing have close relatives feature and this facilitates comprehension of the families and types of the vast range of dinosaurs.

Overwhelming in size and content - overused and heavily marked book

This was my first William Blake book. First and foremost, the book was almost falling apart as it was so used and marked and written on the margins all over by the person before me and also the paper seemed old. This book should not have been sold. I think the previous owner wanted to let it go and did not know how as he had, it seems, a strong relationship with this book over the years. I could not look in it as it was overwhelming. I donated it to the local library.

Also, I don't think this is a right book for someone who wants to be introduced to Blake and his poetry. That was another thing. But if the book was new, then I could have returned it. But it was not worth to spend more money to return it.

The Best Edition!

Mr. Keynes' edition of Blake's complete poetry and prose is the one I've used not only at Shimer College, but also in Russia and China when I taught Blake there. Mr. Keynes arranges Blake's writings chronologically. The reader can thus more clearly see how Blake's mythic system evolves. Clarity matters when a reader falls into a universe as visionary and fluid as William Blake's.
Each poem is a like a magical brick in the mystical structure Blake ultimately builds. His work begins in Innocence, a world where science, imagination, love, and wild beasts blithely dance in balance. When the cruelty, greed, and fears of Experience blight the peaceable kingdoms then society and the human soul split into warring factions.
Blake has been called apocalyptic. In his late great prophetic books families, lovers, societies, and the ecosystem fall to bits. But Los, Blake's heroic artist, "keeps the divine vision in times of trouble." Techno-science and institutionalized greed overshadow the earth, but Los keeps on building Golgonooza, the gorgeous city of art which ultimately connects heaven and earth. This can bring Jerusalem (the feminine divine)back into the heart of Albion (the universal humanity). When the feminine divine suffuses masculine power all things coalesce in a cosmic orgasm of art, science, pleasure, and prayer. "There is no body distinct from the soul!" Mr. Blake proclaimed in his Marriage of Heaven & Hell. "Everything that lives is Holy!" cries Oothoon, whose indestructible purity embraces the love that's "free as the mountain wind." She's become a role model for some exuberant Shimer students.
To truly partake of Blake please treat yourself to at least a few of the full-color illustrated editions that are now wonderfully affordable. The Dover editions are a bargain--but I order the Blake Trust (Princeton University Press) editions for my classes as well as Sir Geoffrey Keynes' lovingly edited Complete Writings. Buy this book! It can bring you bliss!

Great overview, not a ton of depth

Having listened to the Jamil Show on the Brewing Network avidly, and being a big fan of Palmer's essential "How To Brew," I was excited to get my hands on Brewing Classic Styles. Jamil has said in the past that this book was greatly influenced by Ray Daniels' fantastic "Designing Great Beers," and I'm not surprised -- Daniels' book is an essential brewing resource.

Though there are tons of fantastic recipes in Brewing Classic Styles, it came as a bit of a disappointment -- there is very little depth beyond the basic recipes themselves. Much of the content is repeatedly duplicated, which, while understandable, feels lazy or rushed. Fermentation information, which Jamil stresses often as being the most important aspect of a recipe, is nearly always reduced to a boilerplate 3 sentence paragraph.

Jamil and Palmer state that the book started out as a "how to brew with extract" guide, and it shows: each recipe is delivered as extract based, with all grain options given in a final paragraph. Though this is not really a big deal, I do wish that the all grain recipes had been presented in the same easy to read format as the extract, instead of having to go back and plug in substitutions.

The most enjoyable part of reading the book itself are Jamil's stories regarding certain recipes; I will admit that I find myself wishing for more of these!

In conclusion, "Brewing Classic Styles" is a great collection of recipes that lacks some depth; it does, however, make a fantastic accompaniment to Daniels' "Designing Great Beers," which has all of the depth but no actual recipes.

Disappointing

A disproportionately voluminous number of words between two protagonists in an implausible relationship to tell a simple story with a simple message. Regrettably, it's not profound or illuminating in the way the author wrote, exquisitely, The Brothers Karamazov, The Idiot, Crime & Punishment, etc.
