About the Author
Dr. Paul Pimsleur devoted his life to language teaching and testing and was one of the world’s leading experts in applied linguistics. Just the basics....

My husband and I have, in the last few years taken two trips to Europe and though we were only staying for a couple weeks wanted to learn a bit of the language in order to make an effort to at least be able to say the polite phrases and to understand the basics. I was not looking for a comprehensive program, nor was I looking to continue on to a more challenging program.

This set was recommended by my sister who has a degree in Language and has learned and speaks several languages fluently. She advised me that Pimsleur was one of the best programs on the market for what I was looking for, and she was right.

I have found that any effort that I have made to speak the language (no matter how horribly mangled-it appears that it is all about the sincere effort) has been met with appreciation and has often resulted in a more friendly and pleasurably stay. I'm NOT fluent, nor am I a quick study. I used polite/useful phrases from the series frequently in my travels such as: Hello, How are you, excuse me, do you speak English? I do not speak Italian, Where is the bathroom, the list goes on. Any attempts seem to be appreciated, and for me it is worth the time for me to learn a little to be able to get around a little easier. Also, it is fun. I can take the cd's in my car and work on them on my commute. Perfect!

This will not teach you all the Italian you want to know if you are looking to speak fluently, but for a traveler, I thought it was perfect and it was both useful and fun.

I would highly recommend this product for those traveling to Italy that would just like to know a bit of Italian. You can always build onto it later if you wish to, but for the traveler it is a very nice program.

My one wish for these sets would be a booklet that gave a basic run-down on the chapters. With an audio only format sometimes I did not catch the word immediately and found myself looking up a few words on-line in order to understand how they were spelled so I knew if I was pronouncing them correctly. I'm a visual person, what can I say? Other than that I felt this was a highly effective program and would definitely look at other items in this series for our next adventure.

You can learn what Pimsleur Method is.

My purpose of learning Italian conversation is to visit Tuscany villages alone for enjoying slow life there and to acquire the ability to communicate hopefully fluently with the people there.

I actually tried to find out appropriate ways to learn Italian on the Net and finally reached the language courses carried by Amazon.com, namely 'Rosetta Stone' and 'Pimsleur'. After reading the reviews for the Pimsleur courses, I decided to go for it.

But the problem was that the Pimsleur's packages seemed at first expensive to me because I only knew the system's features but I've never listened to it.

Thus I decided to purchase this `Basic Italian' because 1. I just wanted to feel the water to find out if this is for me, 2. this program contains first ten lessons that are derived form the `Italian I'.

I got confident and determined to continue to use the `Italian I' even before I finished this Basic Italian and I'm quite satisfied with the Pimsleur's method. I have been on the `Italian I' currently.

I believe the program is worth spending your money and time.

Pimsleur -- the only way to fly

We used these CD's intensely for 3 weeks before a trip to Italy. I used them only in driving back and forth to work. I covered each lesson twice (sometimes 3 times) before going to the next. When we (wife and I) arrived in Italy, we had a lot of fun with this and the naturally warm people of Italy seemed to have fun with us. We weren't exactly ready to read Dante in the original language, but for the scope of what this program intends to do we had a great experience.

If I had more use for the language than that of a tourist, I would like to go through then Pimsleur long course(s). This is a great way to learn a language. This is the best simulation of learning a language "naturally" that I have seen. The results were great and the pain was very low. Every word they teach is present in the context of use. There really is no rote memorization.

Highly recommended.

A MUST READ for your Spiritual Journey!

My spiritual journey has taken me to many houses of worship, to countless bookstores, to thousands of hours of reading, to purchases at new age shops, to expensive sessions with mediums, to meditation and of course to the worldwide web. I have struggled through Jane Roberts' 'Seth' books, studied 'A Course in Miracles' aligned my chakras and tried to be a sponge and soak up all I could learn.

Yesterday my friend Susan, posted on Facebook about the release of this book 'The Afterlife of Billy Fingers'. I immediately purchased and downloaded it on my Kindle. I followed Billy's journey, thanks to Annie and Billy. I cried and I laughed and I learned a lot, through their journey. This morning when the book ended, I needed MORE! I want to thank the powers that be for the permission they must have given to help Billy be able to tell his story, and also for Annie to be able to hear it.

I wish I had read this book years ago or something like it. The beauty and simplicity and wonder touched my soul unlike all the other books I have ever read before. Trust me when I tell you, I have been reading 2 to 3 books a week since 5th grade and I will be 59 years old this coming Friday.I guess you can say I know what I like when it comes to books. This one was a life changer. If your search brought you here, it was for a very good reason. READ THIS BOOK!

An Exhilarating Experience

Billy Fingers takes us on a jaw-dropping journey through realms I couldn't have imagined and find it hard to believe anyone could make up. This is from a born skeptic. I don't know whether to credit Annie Kagan or Billy Fingers with the spectacular rendering of experiences that must have been very hard to put into words, let alone such consistently dazzling prose. Early on, I let go of whether I believed it and just floated along on the wild and moving ride. The message I took away is that life is an adventure we're meant to have no matter what twists and turns it takes. Thanks to Billy we can now imagine the spiritual universe beyond our spec of a planet and the confines of a mortal body. It's a book I recommend highly and will return to when I find myself thinking small.

Comparing to my NDE.

While the story of the dialogue was very touching, I read it with an open mind but not so open that I was gullible. I had an NDE experience 2 years ago. There were many similarities in this book which I also experienced. While if you read the book and think you are going to find a religious dogma;:ie Pearly gates etc. you are going to be disappointed. However if you are seeking a peek into what it's like in the afterlife? This will give you a taste from one viewpoint. As I tell people today that ask me what my NDE was like I simply tell them that what I experienced may not be what you experience. And for those that have said to me that I was just hallucinating from all the drugs the doctors had me on. I reply to them the drugs that they pumped into me happened truly occurred. But the 25+ minutes my heart stopped and after 3 attempts finally reviving me. I experienced something that has halted my fear of death and enables to me to say to anyone....we have a wonderful afterlife awaiting us. Namaste*

A fascinating group biography of Hollywood's founding moguls

Neal Gabler explores the fascinating question of how Hollywood was created primarily by a remarkable group of men who fit into a remarkably small demographic: European Jewish immigrants, most of them poor, most of them from Manhattan's lower east side, none of them practicing Jews, most of them from families with weak father figures. But together they moved to an almost completely protestant city and created the most successful form of popular entertainment in America, presenting an idealized version of American life for a nation in a constant for new national myths. The most fascinating thing about the book is the gap between the mythical world that they were presenting and their own backgrounds. For Louis B. Mayer, Andy Hardy's America was for him the real America, an America where there were strong nuclear families headed by strong fathers, doting neo-Victorian mothers, and obedient, respectful children. Economically most people were Middle Class, the tenor distinctively Middle American, and almost always Christian. Gabler argues that for most of these men, what they provided was not America as it existed, but the America that they wanted to be a part of.

Almost all of the major studios were founded by men who more or less fit Gabler's description. There are a number of major and minor characters in Gabler's story, the most prominent being Adolph Zukor, who was instrumental in creating Paramount; Carl Laemmle, founder of Universal; William Fox of Fox Pictures, which later merged with Twentieth Century; Louis B. Mayer, who built MGM into Hollywood's largest studio; Harry and Jack Warner of Warner Brothers; and the belligerent Harry Cohn of Columbia. There are in addition a number of crucial supporting characters, none more important than the legendary Irving Thalberg (I knew very slightly Thalberg's son, also Irving, an academic philosopher who spent his career in Chicago and who quietly funded liberal political causes--he paid for the Chicago Seven's legal bills at their trial--while quietly pursuing his university career), the inspiration for F. Scott Fitzgerald's last novel THE LAST TYCOON. We also meet the Schenck brothers, Nicholas and Joseph, the Rabbi of Hollywood Edgar F. Magnin, theater chain owner Marcus Loew, and an uncountable number of smaller figures.

One of the most striking aspects of the biography is how utterly these men suppressed their Jewish backgrounds in their films. Although THE JAZZ SINGER is the story of the son of a Jewish son rejecting the culture of his cantor father (Gabler points out that the son's story was also the story of the moguls), the vast majority of movies produced by Hollywood in the twenties, thirties, and forties contained no identifiably Jewish characters. Although an astonishing number of the people producing the movies were Jewish, it was as if they felt compelled to completely erase Jews from their idealization of American life. The was more than mere assimilationist aspirations; it was as if they were trying to expunge the weak fathers of their youths, the poverty they knew growing up, and become a part of a nation that largely rejected them. For two or three decades, at least, they could maintain this myth, but in the forties and the HUAC committee of the U.S. House of Representatives they found their fiefdom increasingly under attack for the industry's supposed inculcation of un-American (i.e., Communist) values. Many of their attackers persisted in the fascist depiction of Communism as an essentially Jewish cast of thought (in Hitler's writings there is no clear distinction between Jews and Communists, and at least one part of his motivation in attacking Russia was to attack what he weirdly considered a Jewish nation).

This is not a perfect book. For one thing, the scope is simply too large for any one book to undertake. And inevitably there are either serious omissions or details that don't quite tell the whole story. For instance, Gabler attempts to characterize the more plebian tendencies at Warner's by mentioning that one of their stars was Rin Tin Tin, which seems to hint at how far down the ladder they were in the Hollywood pecking order, but failing to note that for most of his life Rin Tin Tin was the number one box office star in Hollywood. Also, there is amazingly little discussion of the many Jewish performers in Hollywood. Some are mentioned in passing (such as Groucho Marx, noting his famous reply to the attempt by the Jewish country club Hillcrest to recruit new members following the stock market crash, that he wouldn't want to be a member of a club that would accept someone like him as a member), and Edward G. Robinson gets a few mentions, but for the most part actors are ignored. This is overwhelmingly a book about the top brass. And one can take issue with some minor depictions, such as the long discussion of the nature of Universal in the thirties, but no mention of the man who is most responsible for the visual look of those films and the director of all their major achievements, James Whale. The implication is that the distinctive look of Universal films was not determined by the former art director Whale. But this is all nitpicking.

I do have to take strong issue with one of the current featured reviews that criticizes the book because he believes that the American depicted in the movies was very much the America he knew in the forties and fifties. First, the book deals mainly with America in the twenties and thirties, a bit less with the forties, and the fifties almost not at all, so the time framework of his criticism is off. Second, how can anyone argue that the movies were not an idealization if one knows any American history at all? Certainly the poverty that my parents and grandparents knew growing up in Arkansas during those decades was almost completely ignored, THE GRAPES OF WRATH aside (and the subject of that film were very much my people). Any informed demographic study of the period will show that the depiction of women in the films was wildly out of kilter with the actual lives of women, many of whom had to take jobs even in the thirties, forties, and fifties to enable families to make it financially (the fifties is the only decade in American history of which the so-called traditional American family is even somewhat true). And Hollywood films of the period are notorious today for their depiction of race relations. Anyone stating that the Hollywood film in any conceivable sense depicted America as it really existed beggars credulity.

I strongly recommend this book to anyone either interested in the history of the movie industry or how immigrants sought to integrate themselves in their new nation. The book contains a wealth of information and I can't imagine anyone know coming away from it not merely entertained but better informed.

About as good a book for a thorough review of C as I've seen

When I purchased this text, I hadn't done much serious C programming in a while. But since I knew the C language, I really didn't want to have to read through monotonous beginner programming materials. Since I have several other products published by Deitel & Associates, I suspected that the quality of this text would be good--and after taking a few minutes to search inside the book (a GREAT feature here on Amazon, by the way), my suspicion was confirmed and I purchased both the physical book and the electronic version. I then worked through the book over a period of about month, doing each and every code example--and then changing them, breaking them, fixing them, adding features to them, and whatever else I could think of to really get inside the material. By the end of the text I found that I have a MUCH better understanding of the C language, and feel very comfortable using it in my everyday coding endeavours. I definitely "know what I don't know" at this point, and thus find it much easier to get to the next level of C programming. And although I found a few small and relatively minor errata, I did not find the electronic version to be missing portions of code--so I cannot reproduce what Mr. Moore (another reviewer here) found 10 months prior to my review. So my suspicion is that the authors have taken the information from his review and simply fixed the electronic version of the text.

As I spent quite a bit of time going through this text and plan to use it heavily (mainly in the world of critical embedded systems development), I paid particular attention to the "Secure C Programming" sections at the end of most of the chapters. Although brief, I found these sections to be quite invaluable. I can understand how some people would like to see more material here, but there is so much to cover that I think the text would grow unnecessarily long if it were to be expanded much. Instead, I prefer the more brief description of potential issues, with references made to where I can go to find more information. In fact I used many (if not all) of these references, and found them to be extremely valuable. I also found the book to do a very good job at following the basic principles consistent with the MISRA guidelines, as well as the JPL coding standards. Any serious embedded systems developer (and I would argue any serious C developer) should be very familiar with most of these standards--because the industry you'll be working in seems to be extremely serious about them. Just Google for the recent (fall 2013) result of the Toyota Camry unintended acceleration suits and the firmware-related issues that came to light therein, to get a flavour of just how important these types of standards can be. So the concept of secure C programming is in fact very important, and one of the features I liked most about this book.

In the end, I found this book to be one of the best I've seen on the subject of a review of the C language for established programmers. If you are looking for a "hold-my-hand" guide to programming in the C language, then this book is probably not for you. Perhaps in that case you should check out one of the many beginning programming texts using the C language. However if, like me, you learned and used the C language in the past but hadn't done much with it for a few years, then this book is an excellent choice. It's relatively inexpensive, and it's quite easy to cover a chapter every 1-2 days...even doing all the code examples. I should mention that some might criticize the book for not having *enough* code examples, and that might be a legitimate complaint. However if you are an experienced programmer (the audience this book is intended for), then do you really need that many programming examples? I would argue that in fact you don't--and all that you really need is a thorough explanation of the syntax and logic of using the C language and the standard library functions, with a heavy emphasis on SAFETY in using these features. And in fact, this is exactly what this text does.

So in summary, this book has quickly become one of my favorite programming texts. It is brief, thorough on the important matters, and very relevant to my field of using C for safety-critical embedded systems. Most of all it gives me relative references that I can use to enhance my learning in the future. So for the price, I would highly recommend people consider this book.

Too much fluff

As a long-time Python programmer seeing to move to lower-level work, I thought this book "for programmers" would be perfect. Unfortunately, this is barely above the level of an introductory book - there is simply too much fluff and unnecessary reference material. The book wastes a lot of time explaining irrelevant things like what Linux is, how to run a C program, and how to use if statements. I would rather have seen a more thorough discussion of topics important to C as an imperative language, like pointers - essentially, what I wanted was a quick runthrough of the language along with detailed discussion of best practices and idioms.

This book has some strong suits - the secure programming section at the end of each chapter was interesting, though short, and the C11 material was interesting (though it also felt tacked-on in order to give the book a more impressive title).

Overall this book gets the job done, but you are not getting your money's worth.

Another great text from Deitel and Deitel

When you are looking to learn a new technology (or very old in this case, but still one of the best) the Deitel Developer series is nearly guaranteed to teach it effectively. I am a STEM educator, so I am picky about how things are taught and scaffolded and this book was great at cleary communicating how C works - it does not merely give an example to copy and paste and then move on. The authors clearly know their content and explain every example in great detail. I would also HIGHLY recommend their Java for Programmers edition with 7 se included - another great buy.

Gr 8 Up—Like most transgender children, Katie, who was born and raised as a boy named Luke, was aware of her difference early on, though it was years before she found the word to describe herself. Other family problems made it easy for her to withdraw into a serious depression without being noticed. When Katie finally came across the word "transgender" and read descriptions of what it meant, she risked everything and reached out to her mother, who was supportive and relieved to understand her child better. She promised to help Katie make the transition to her internally identified gender of female, if Katie promised not to kill herself. The book opens with Katie starting college. Having chosen to be an out and open transgender activist while still in high school, she decided to "go stealth" at college, a term used to describe transgender people who prefer not to be identified as such. The writing style is open and straightforward, although much of the dialogue is awkward and extraneous. The book starts out a bit slowly and picks up significantly in the later half. Rethinking Normal offers an honest, thought provoking tale of a small boy struggling to find his true identity as a woman.

I wasn't sure what to expect when I sat down and opened up Rethinking Normal for the first time, but I quickly found myself in the shoes of an amazing person telling her life story in honest detail. This is the story of Ms. Hill's journey to self discovery in spite of pain and suffering by her peers, that is often heart wrenching and uplifting. At times, as the reader, I felt like I needed to give the author a big hug and tell her it will be okay. Ms. Hill's story is touching, and brings awareness to a less than aware audience. It is a journey that the reader will take with the author as she recounts her tales of sadness, despair, love, and discovery that ultimately leads to her being the strong intelligent woman that she is today. This is a book that should be read by anyone and will help shed light on what it is like to grow up transgender in modern society, and will truly make you rethink what is normal.

Modern day Cinderella

On the strong side, this book gives a good insight into lives of transgendered people. There's a lot of emotion embedded into these pages: both high and lows as we get familiar with Katie's story. As it turns out, these experiences are not that different from common people (aka cisgendered). In a lot of instances Katie acts and feels and even falls in love like any girl her age would do. It clearly shows how unbased are society's fears and prejudices against transgender. And it calls for change to happen.

However, there is a reason why people should not write memoirs about themselves, especially at young age. Overall it lacks maturity and reeks a lot of judgments that author herself has. Like calling someone "probably gay" who can be easily identified from the events in the book. Or giving only onesided opinion about people that she did not like for some reason. But worst of all was her recounting on relationship with Arin.

Poor Arin... From Katie's perspective it seems that she never saw him as a man in her life. In other words he was friend-zoned, a feeling that is quite familiar to a lot of unhappy guys. Making it all public is a very rude thing to do - especially for someone who works very hard to build a masculine identity.

Outstanding read. There were some very emotionally poignant moments, and the story overall gave me a personal and touching glimpse into a lifestyle I knew nothing about, and was too afraid to ask about. Trust me, ALL your questions will be answered. I highly recommend this book - it will open your eyes and your mind.

About the Author
Jason Hazeley is the co-writer of The Framley Examiner and the best-selling Bollocks to Alton Towers. Along with Joel Morris, he has written for a frankly stupid number of radio and TV comedy shows including Charlie Brooker's Screenwipe. He divides his time between London and the pub.

I bought this in Scotland as a gift for a friend. Its absolutely hysterical. Just nails the Hipster culture.

This book was purchased as a Christmas gift and we all enjoyed it before we gave it away. Hilarious! Nice little hardcover book too. I will be others in the series too.
