Andrei Tarkovsky (1932-1986) was one of Russia's most influential and renowned filmmakers, despite an output of only seven feature films in twenty years. Revered by such filmmaking giants as Ingmar Bergman and Akira Kurosawa, Tarkovsky is famous for his use of long takes, languid pacing, dreamlike metaphorical imagery, and meditations on spirituality and the human soul. His Andrei Roublev, Solaris, and The Mirror are considered landmarks of postwar Russian cinema.

Andrei Tarkovsky: Interviews is the first English-language collection of interviews with and profiles of the filmmaker. It includes conversations originally published in French, Italian, Russian, and British periodicals. With pieces from 1962 through 1986, the collection spans the breadth of Tarkovsky's career.

In the volume, Tarkovsky candidly and articulately discusses the difficulties of making films under the censors of the Soviet Union. He explores his aesthetic ideology, filmmakers he admires, and his eventual self-exile from Russia. He talks about recurring images in his movies--water, horses, fire, snow--but adamantly refuses to divulge what they mean, as he feels that would impose his own meaning onto the audience. At times cagey and resistant to interviewers, Tarkovsky nevertheless reveals his vision and his rigorous devotion to his art.

Magic Book of Leadership Secrets

This book maybe one of the best leadership resources I've seen in years. I'll put this right up next to Simon Sinek's "Leaders Eat Last", Dr. Henry Cloud's "Boundaries for Leaders", or even Steve Jobs biography by Walter Isaacson.

John delivers great content by focusing on the questions that he asks himself and his team, and the questions other leaders ask him. I find the questions themselves provide great value. I can use them with my team, my inner circle, my peers, my mentors and myself.

Then, what's even better, is that John gets behind the questions. Like a great magician revealing the secrets of his craft, John reveals the leadership principles of how to see through the challenges that leaders often face.

I can't imagine a leader not getting value out of this book, and I am looking forward to masterminding this book further with my peers In the weeks, months and years ahead.

Good leaders know what they don't know.

It's been said that the more your organizational authority increases, the more your organizational IQ decreases, and asking great questions can help give you new information and a new perspective. In this book, John Maxwell suggests many excellent questions that you should be asking yourself as a leader like: Am I investing in myself? Am I staying in my strength zone? Am I spending time with the right people? He also outlines questions you should be asking your team: What do you think? I can I serve you? What did you learn? What do I need to know?

Each chapter starts with an overarching question and then digs deeper with more powerful questions, some of which were submitted by John's clients, readers, and members of The John Maxwell Team (coaches, speakers, trainers).

This book is an excellent resource for all leaders, and one I recommend you get in hard copy because you will want to pull it off the shelf and refer to it often.

Helpful For Coaching Clients Or New Leaders

Good Leaders Ask Great Questions by John C. Maxwell is a basic leadership book. The focus of the book is in alignment with the title. Maxwell uses examples from his own leadership experience, sharing successes and failures. The common theme of asking questions is divided into to parts: Questions John Maxwell Asks and Questions Leaders Ask Him. Most emphasis is placed on answering questions from leaders, such as:

** What must I do to lead successfully?
** How does leadership work?
** How do I get started in leadership?
** How do I resolve conflict?
** How can I succeed?
** How can I successfully navigate leadership?

The book is informative, yet some of his other books are much better. This book reminded me of a summary of coaching calls or perhaps a solution to managing coaching clients. The structure is repetitive and the book loses it uniqueness after the "Ask question" concept is grasped. I'm a huge fan of John Maxwell books, yet I found this one a bit too simplistic and geared primarily to new leaders.

Maxwell's The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership is excellent and one of the required books for my pastoral leadership class at Liberty University. Failing Forward is my favorite Maxwell book and I've recommended it many times to friends. I've read both of these books several times and they will continue to be reference books in my leadership library!

Inspiring and helpful

You already believe in reading aloud and feel comfortable enough doing it... so do you really need a Read Aloud Handbook? You probably don't NEED it, but I think you'll be grateful to have this book. As both a parent of young children and as a teacher of low-income middle school students (on a break to stay at home while my kids are young), I'm getting so much from it.

The biggest lure for me was the Handbook's "Treasury" - the annotated list of great read-aloud books that makes up the last third of the Handbook. I get overwhelmed when selecting books and wanted to be able to choose from a list of reliably loveable books for my children, as well as to make sure I wasn't missing any especially good choices for my middle school students. I'm pleased with the Treasury so far, both in the quality of books described and in the range of ages represented (There are a great few pages on reading to infants in Ch. 3 and any age toddler-8th grade should find several great recommendations in the Treasury). The bulk of the books described are picture books, short novels, and longer novels (100 pages and up), but there are some recommendations for poetry and reference books as well.

The first 170 pages of the Handbook covers topics like why we should be reading aloud, suggestions for reading aloud at each stage of development from infant up, tips for Sustained Silent Reading, and good and bad news about the growing dependence on digital reading. I'm surprised at how much I enjoyed these chapters. Here's what I loved:
* Inspiring: Trelease gives more than a sales-pitch for reading aloud - he makes the love and joy of reading with children contagious. I was already "sold" on reading aloud, but feel re-energized to make read-alouds more frequent and more fun.
* Challenging: The many anecdotes of inspiring educators and parents made me think. A teacher of 3 and 4 year olds reads chapter books as well as picture books... am I right to have assumed my 3 year old can't handle hearing a chapter book yet? And a mother read to her young child at meals as long a duration as the child showed interest... where can I work in more fun reading to our days? I could go on.
* Filled with practical suggestions: Some examples: great specific book recommendations when transitioning from picture books to novels, an anecdote of a clever ipod/text program for struggling readers, what we can learn from Oprah, and of course many practical dos and don'ts while reading aloud (before, during, and after reading). Several seem common sense, but they're still helpful.
* Readable: This reads like a conversation with a knowledgeable veteran educator who has formed strong opinions after years of getting to know how kids learn. It's filled with research, but not at all dense.

I'd also recommend Pam Allyn's What to Read When. There's not too much overlap; its book recommendations are more about teaching or opening up conversations on many different topics while the suggestions in Trelease's book are more about learning to love to read. Both are helpful to me.

The best book I've read on creating readers....

One and a half years ago, my kindergartener was reading at a 3rd grade level but lacked "comprehension". While he could retell basic plot elements, he appeared to lack any ability to synthesize or think about what he had read.

So I dutifully bought several comprehension workbooks and was preparing to work with him all summer. Then I stumbled across Trelease's wonderful handbook, and the light went on. What a compelling message about the importance of reading aloud to kids! What a wonderful book list! And what a beautifully simple way to transform my son into a truly comprehending reader!

All I needed to do was read to my son abundantly, ENCOURAGE discussion, rejoice and respond if he spontaneously asked questions while I was reading (THAT was a paradigm shift), and surround him with great books. I could toss out the workbooks.

My son's reading comprehension greatly improved, my children LOVE our read-aloud times - as do I - and they love to read themselves. What's not to like? This book is a wonderful resource that I have referred to repeatedly.

Fantastic update

I am devoted follower of the Read-Aloud Handbook, and I thought for sure Jim Trelease was officially retired, so imagine my delight when this seventh edition appeared on Amazon! To make things even better, there is tremendous amount of new material in this edition. I have read the sixth edition front to back multiple times (I even did a blog series reviewing it chapter by chapter), and I have a copy of the first edition that I found at the used bookstore, but now I think I might have to invest in copies of editions 2, 3, 4 and 5 as well! Trelease really does replace at least 40 percent of the content and significantly revise the book list. This is definitely worth ordering if you already have a previous edition.

Stranger Than I Imagined!

I recently read the authors "Brandy Of The Damned", I knew a little about the band, and I've read damn near everything Robert Anton Wilson ever wrote, so take this as a RAW fan (musically, I'm more punk/industrial/Detroit techno) perspective.

I found it to be quite amazing, a truly amazing story, solidly grounded in the history of the eras it took place in. I didn't read anything else until I was done.

The only thing I have that is close to criticism is that I think the author may want to read "Debt: The First 5000 Years" (it is by an anthropologist who has been involved with the Occupy movement, the stories we tell ourselves about the history of money are not anything like the truth, read the book!), and then perhaps add a bit to some of the sections on money and the economy.

Recommended, strongly to RAW fans and Discordians everywhere, I'd think everyone else would would like it too, but then why isn't RAW heralded as a great writer, and the Illuminatus trilogy as a great work?

The Whole KLF

The attempt of this book is not just to tell the story of a succesfull pop band, but its really about connecting events and ideas throughout the history of mankind + the KLF in attempt to explain KLF's "burning of a million quid". The author puts together a web of ideas including Carl Jung, Discordians, Doctor Who, the Illumintus, and others that begs to assess the world for what it is. Although it does drag on at some points, this cheap read is worth all the money and will give not just the story of one of the most anarchic band in the music industry but also the philosophy reasoning behind it.

Higgs really captures what's really great about the KLF --- not so much their music (which is interesting and quite good), but more their philosophy, which is striking and fascinating and surprisingly deep. Not to mention, of course, their sense of humour.
