Grade 1–5—This book doubles as an acrostic poem and a rich exploration of Arctic life. The introduction explains that Arctic people have built Inuksuit, stone towers, as guides for thousands of years. They can mark directions, or food caches. They aid hunting, or mark memorials. Each letter of the word "Inuksuk" is given two pages. The first spread shows a boldly colored and textured painting and explains the term. Then each letter is associated with an aspect of Arctic life, e.g., "N is for Nanuq." The word appears in English and in Inuktitut syllabics. The following page gives more information. "N is for Nanuq, the powerful polar bear of the North." A few smaller paintings illustrate sentences about the subject. The back matter includes a reference to the Inuksuit in the book and a pronunciation guide to Inuktitut words. This book succeeds wonderfully as a simple alphabet book and as an exceptional exploration of Arctic life and culture. beautifully illustrated

I used this excellent book to teach yoga through stories with children. Then they built their own inuksuks with blocks. I loved the fact that each form had its own meaning. The children loved the new vocabulary and the pictures.

I Is for Inuksuk: An Arctic Celebration is a fabulous book that provides rich details about life in the Arctic and the traditions of the Inuit people. With it's brightly illustrated pictures, readers learn about the way of life of Inuit and their traditional alphabet. The book also includes a wonderful guide of Inuit pronunciations, as well as words. The author does a wonderful job at teaching readers about the history of the Inuit people, Inuksuk, and she also provides facts about the animals featured in the book. The most fascinating element of the book for me was reading about and learning the native alphabet. I think this is great for classroom and home settings.

"I is for Inuksuk" is a beautiful children's book portraying the traditional lifeways of the Inuit People of Canada. The inuksuit are stone towers built by the Arctic's indigenous people to guide them across snow and ice, or to mark a food source. They are the official symbol of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games. Every letter of the word "inuksuk" becomes a part of another Inuktuit word which with the stunning paintings of Wallace represent many scenes of Arctic and Inuit life. "I is for Inuksuk" becomes a beautiful ambassador, inviting children and adults to come and learn more about the Inuit and the Arctic. Of particular interest is the use of Inuktuit symbols to write words in one of the official languages of Nunavit.

I absolutely adored this story - told in two timelines as we follow Alice as she arrives at Fiercombe Manor and Elizabeth Stanton, a previous resident who is somewhat enigmatic, this gripped me from the start and is written so beautifully and with such great poignancy that it stayed with me long after I had finished it. The two main characters are appealing and genuinely fascinating, separated as they are by years but both living strangely parallel lives. It really was a most terrific read and I loved every minute of it.

This will certainly be going on my Highly Recommended list for people who adore a good heartfelt fictional story with a beautiful historical flavour.

I was lucky enough to recently visit the inspiration behind the story, Owlpen Manor in Gloucestershire and you can read all about that here. Again I would encourage anyone who can to visit there themselves - beautiful and peaceful I had the best time. Links to the Owlpen website can be found in the article.

Rich in atmosphere

There's something so comforting about a gothic mystery, that makes you feel like curling up by the fire on a wild night. Fans of Kate Morton or The Little Stranger will enjoy this atmospheric story set in a crumbling Elizabethan manor house in 1930s rural England. Alice Eveleigh is a young woman who has expecting a child after a brief, disastrous relationship. Her mother sends her away to stay at remote Fiercombe Manor until she has the baby.

When Alice arrives at the Manor, she learns about Elizabeth Stanton, who lived there and was married to the baronet a generation earlier. No one seems to know what happened to Elizabeth, or if they do, they don't want to talk about it. Alice stumbles onto Elizabeth's diary and starts to gradually piece together the story of what happened to her.

Can I just say at this point that "The Girl in the Photograph" is a terrible title for this book? For starters, it doesn't sound like it's going to be about someone from the 19th century. Nor is Elizabeth a girl, but if the title refers to her daughter that is even more misleading because she's not the one that Alice is interested in. And lastly, Alice spends most of the book being fascinated by Elizabeth without ever seeing a photograph of her at all. The US edition is titled "Fiercombe Manor", which is better, though still not very appealing.

Putting that little rant aside, I did enjoy this book - it has a real atmosphere about it, a little creepy, a little intriguing. The pace is quite slow and I got a little annoyed by the way Alice was fond of telling us things like "I could never have imagined how much my life was about to change" - just get on with the story, please! But for the most part the author is in complete control of how much she wants us to be able to work out at any given time and the revelations unfold with impeccable timing.

In the acknowledgements section at the very end of the book, the author explains that she based the fictional Fiercombe Manor on the real Owlpen Manor in Gloucestershire. If you look online there are a number of photographs of Owlpen Manor and you may like to look them up before reading the book.

‘The Girl in the Photograph’ by Kate Riordan began with great promise but I thought the pace a little bit too slow and that it wound up fizzling out a bit towards the end. The story is told by two women, Alice in 1933 and Elizabeth in 1898, who both live at the Gothic and secluded English country estate, Firecombe Manor. When Alice became pregnant to her married boyfriend her mother sent her away to stay with her childhood friend, Edith Jelphs, who works as a maid at Firecomb Manor.

Alice soon discovers Elizabeth’s old diaries and begins a quest to discover all of the mysteries that Firecombe Manor holds. Even though Edith worked for Elizabeth she is reluctant to speak about the past, so Alice is left to do most of the investigating on her own, with a bit of help from a local historian.

I particularly enjoyed the chapters of ‘The Girl in the Photograph’ which were told from Elizabeth’s perspective. They had a real mysterious and Gothic feel to them and I was really interested to find out what happened to her and her children. I did feel though that Alice’s chapters dragged on a bit and that the ending was rather anticlimactic, but these are all very likely just a matter of my own personal preferences. The story was well written and the mysteries are subtly, although slowly, revealed in a way that will appeal to readers who enjoy Gothic mysteries.

The Girl in the Photograph was published in the USA under the title Firecombe Manor.

I will re-review after getting through the book completely, but initial review of the book is I am very pleased. The Structure of this book section, and Part 1 "General Introduction" cover how the book is laid out, and the basics you could learn from the official certification page, (difference between an associate and professional cert). The Strategic Understanding and Exam strategies sections weren't break through techniques, but good information for someone who hasn't studied for an IT cert before, or has been out of school for a while. I'm only a chapter into the bulk of the book, but am very please thus far- the information is broken up by topic, written clearly, and has graphic diagrams.

If you're familiar with SAP, and their learning material and courses, this book follows the same format. With that said, I've taken SAP courses, and own a few BW books, so I don't agree with the negative reviews. But then again, the technical content isn't overwhelming.

If you're new to programing, and SAP/ABAP specifically, it will be a more difficult read, and should probably be saved for after you learn alot of the base concepts and terms.

Good book for beginners

This is a great book for a beginning violinist. My son has been playing for about a year and can play most of the songs in the book with just a little practice. I like that most of the songs are well known carols. Since my son is only 7 years old he enjoys playing songs he actually knows.

Great Book

I bought this book for Level 2 nursing classes that have not started yet. It has been a great help with Level 1 as well. It breaks everything down for you. It has been great for working on my drug cards as well. Nursing students can not go wrong buying this book even for level one meds. I am very happy I decided to buy while still in level 1.

Not bad for a pharmacology book

Not bad for a pharmacology book. Of course, how interesting is Pharm really going to be? But in general it is easy to read and understand and breaks things down pretty well. I would have given it 5 stars, but I just don't like pharmacology. But I have to say that the seller got it to me quickly in pristine condition.
