About the Author
Jeff Kirkham is a master sergeant in the U.S. Army Special Forces. He owns and operates Praetorian Innovations LLC, providing paramilitary training, evaluation, operational planning, and mission oversight in hostile combat environments. Since 2003, he has spent more than 50 months in Iraq and Afghanistan training, advising, and supporting indigenous elite commando units. He is also president of TwistRate, a web-based company dedicated to helping veteran entrepreneurs or "veteranpreneurs" get their inventions prototyped, funded, and sold. About the Author

Craig E. Johnson (PhD, University of Denver) is emeritus professor of leadership studies at George Fox University, Newberg, Oregon, where he taught undergraduate and graduate courses in leadership, ethics, management and communication. During his time at the university he served as director of the George Fox Doctor of Business Administration program and chair of the Department of Communication Arts. Though retired from full-time teaching, Johnson continues to serve as an adjunct professor. He is the author of Organizational Ethics: A Practical Approach (also published by Sage) and co-author, with Michael Z. Hackman, of Leadership: A Communication Perspective. His research findings, instructional ideas, and book reviews have been published in the Journal of Leadership Studies, the Journal of Leadership and Organizational Studies, the Journal of Leadership Education, Academy of Management Learning and Education, the International Leadership Journal, Communication Quarterly, Communication Reports, and other journals. In 2016 he received the George Fox University outstanding graduate faculty researcher award.  Johnson has led and participated in service and educational trips to Honduras, Kenya, Rwanda, New Zealand, China, and Brazil and has held volunteer leadership positions in a variety of religious and nonprofit organizations. In addition to  teaching and writing, he enjoys working out, reading, fly-fishing, watching sports, and spending time with family.

This book arrived at moment in my life when I had agreed to deliver a seminar on intercultural leadership and create a symposium on academic excellence with a focus on ethics. It had been many years since I had philosophy courses in ethics and felt like I needed a significant refresher despite the fact that I felt I was au courant with the ethical challenges and issues that existed in the context or I was working. The trick was to turn endless ethical speculation into a process whereby individuals recognized the elements that were rooted in their cultural conscience and their critical personal experiences.

Certainly we live in a shadowy world, and it is that world where the authors launch the questions that are aimed at helping us cope with it and change it. On the other hand, we are too easily ready to condemn others behavior if the temptation to turn a blind eye fails us. "Moral Disengagement" can seem like the only alternative drowning in to insoluble perplexities of contemporary existence. Moral disengagement, in fact, is the theme of one of the many self-administered soundings of personal attitudes and behaviors that the book uses to bring students to engage not just ideas but to explore themselves and share with each other.

Sources of moral theory and practice from various cultures are examined with their pros and cons, or rather with an eye to what they can do and what they can't do. There is perhaps less of an emphasis on the religious roots of much moral formation that exists perhaps for more of us than we might suspect. Consistently there is awareness of and advice for “followership” as well as leadership. In life we will inevitably play both roles betimes, and it is refreshing as well as important to concentrate on behaviors that make ethical followers as well as keep leaders on track.
Teachers today are faced with classes that may be composed more of international than domestic students. This inevitably means that there are various views on what is right and wrong in everyday student life as well as going on in the world outside. We assume the telling others about differences suffices to create the awareness and the acculturation required for successfully coping with the new environment. While we may intellectually hear and recognize that there are new standards, this often does little for the innate perspectives and inclinations we bring with us. Simply put, we don't believe the new rules or recognize how seriously they may be meant—and their consequences. The usefulness of what it's found in this book lies not just in its perusal, but in its explorations that can be discussed and shared as students search for strategies going forward.
It is hard today to write a book about ethics without revealing one’s moral and ethical position and cultural orientation. The author has done a rather good job of this, but advocacy is ever present in the examples, histories and case studies chosen just in the act of choosing them. Certainly today’s world is full of ethical challenges and there is a very broad selection of them, current and up to date. In my case, my classroom frequently consists of more international students than domestic ones, so there is the challenge of opening the door to a much wider selection of issues, cultural orientations and perspectives than the largely US and Eurocentric ones that are familiar or at least recognizable to more domestic participants.

The examination of popular culture, Hollywood and Bollywood, etc., as cultural mediators provides discussable examples of leadership and ethical dilemmas. There could be more about marketing, branding, both of commercial products and group identities. We live on a planet whose “worlds” are shaped by our social constructions and this deserves more examination and enlightenment. Though we repeatedly attempt them, “universal” principles are hard to come by in a diverse world. This is becoming ever more evident and perhaps our need to construct them while paying lip service to difference can be colonization redux.

While world affairs may seem a touch speculative to undergraduate and even many graduate students, everyday behavior around social inclusion, plagiarism, cheating, and classroom behavior elicit strong feelings that in turn result in knee-jerk ethical judgments, often very uninformed.This is a powerful launching point for ethical concern and discussion.

About the Author

Dr. Gregory Szuladziński received his master’s degree in mechanical engineering from Warsaw University of Technology in 1965 and his doctoral degree in structural mechanics from the University of Southern California in 1973. From 1966 to 1980, he worked in the United States in the fields of aerospace, nuclear engineering, and shipbuilding. He has done extensive work in computer simulations of seismic events and accidental dynamic conditions as related to the safety of nuclear plants and military hardware. From 1981 until the present time, he has been working in Australia in the fields of aerospace, railway, power, offshore, automotive, and process industries, as well as in rock mechanics, underground blasting, infrastructure protection, and military applications. He has a number of publications to his credit in the area of nonlinear mechanics. His first book on the subject, Dynamics of Structures and Machinery: Problems and Solutions, was published in 1982. Dr. Szuladziński has been involved with the finite-element method of simulation of structural problems since 1966. In 1978–1979, he worked as the principal analyst for Control Data in Los Angeles in support of fi nite-element analysis (FEA) codes. Since the early 1990s he has been working on computer simulations of such violent phenomena as rock breaking with the use of explosives, fragmentation of metallic objects, shock damage to buildings, structural collapse, fluid–structure interaction, blast protection, and aircraft impact protection. He has conducted a number of state of-the-art studies showing explicit fragmentations of structures and other objects. He is a fellow of the Institute of Engineers Australia, a member of its Structural and Mechanical College, a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and of the American Society of Civil Engineers.

Very good book

The only book I know on the subject of shock and impact with formulae examples and in metric. It is not only formulas, but also explanations of physics behind many of them.
Many worked problems help to get a feel of the subject.
Numerous illustrations - crisp and easy to read.
Good theory/practice - I can make quick manual calculations and then I can compare it with my FEA results.

Life Changing Book

The philosopher Baruch Spinoza once said "to understand is to be free". This book does an phenomenal job at understanding the causes of social anxiety and presenting strategies to counteract these causes. The book states that social anxiety(shyness too) is a natural instinct based on nature and nurture, and everyone suffers from it to a certain degree(or susceptible to it). and we can overcome it by understanding it and using cognitive behavioral techniques to ultimately cancel out our socially awkward behavior.

part 1 of the book is called "understanding social anxiety", in it defines social anxiety and how it works in terms of our assumptions and beliefs.

part 2 of the book lays out several proven cognitive strategies. these strategies really do work, to me it was like dumping a base into an acid.

part 3 is sort of a "bonus" chapter to help you be more assertive, on bullying , and relaxation.

This is the best book i have EVER read on the subject. The author truly understands where social anxiety comes from and knows how painful it can be. And the best part, the author knows what to do about it. and it really DOES work.

Social Anxiety can be a VERY painful experience, we can miss out on friendships and intimate relationships, become lonely, feel unwanted and different, feel like there is something really wrong with us etc. (you are not alone)

this book can help you change all of that, and help you live your life to the fullest. You CAN live a socially rich life. You CAN live a rich romantic life. You CAN live a life that fully and harmoniously expresses who you are to the world.

i wish you the best in your journey on overcoming your barriers to harmonious human relations.

As has already been alluded to in previous reviews, the author gets it. She understands the problem completely and how we keep it going. She provides a simple yet effective strategy for change: 1)change how you think using a thought record 2)do things differently and most important think about what actually happened and how it differs from your catastrophic expectations 3)stop being self-conscious and learn to focus externally instead of on yourself 4)test and learn to change your limiting beliefs by collecting new information that disputes those beliefs. It's that simple and as effective.

This book is exactly what I needed!!! Only regret: that I didn't find it sooner

This book was exactly what I needed. It feels like I have been under this dark cloud forever and now the cloud is slowly starting to dissipate and I'm starting to feel the warmth of the sun. It makes me want to cry and laugh at the same time knowing that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. In fact I have not been able to stop smiling for the last 2 days. I don't know if I am socially phobic, but darn near! Never been diagnosed or anything, but all my life I have struggled with extreme shyness. It is so painful. But as I read through the book it gives me so many NEW ideas. And as someone who thinks a lot, I've thought this dilemma over and over and read about it, this book is so enlightening! Articles and things I've read in the past say, "don't focus on yourself so much, but focus on the other person," or "Just be positive." Others have made comments, "Just lighten up, you take everything too seriously," "Just toughen up," "Just this...Just that." The articles I read don't explain HOW, and these well-meaning people actually make you feel worse about yourself because they make it seem like "What's the big deal?" Though I've always been somewhat shy, when I was younger, I used to be pretty social. As I got older is when the social anxiety really started to kick in. I've always wondered what's wrong with me? I have tried soooo many different things to make myself "better," feeling that there is something inherently wrong with me. As I am reading this, I am just wishing I could've read this 10 yrs ago, it would have saved me so much pain and doing the wrong things to alleviate the pain, although I know this book is not near that old, still though I feel that all that anxiety is kind of melting away. I'm not even done with the book, but it's already helped me ALOT! What I've realized in reading this is that I actually am a naturally fairly Extroverted person. Though that label "Shy" was always slapped on me, I naturally want to be around people. And so that is a huge realization! The author has so much understanding and the writing is factual and to the point, no more, no less. But written in such a way that helps you understand your problem and gives you the steps to reason with yourself. About everything else I am a very rational person, and know that my thoughts about social situations are irrational, but somehow, I just couldn't change them. This book has you do mini-experiments to test your existing beliefs, and helps you get to the root of your reasoning. Absolutely wonderful. I'm fairly certain that my confidence will come back quickly, as it already has started. Buy this book if you are really struggling with social anxiety/shyness, you will be so glad you did.

About the Author
Teaches research methods, statistics, and organizational behavior in the masters and doctoral programs of public administration and business. Cooper's Ph.D. is from Kent State University. In addition to grants, articles, books, and monographs, he has received several teaching awards, most recently from the College of Architecture, Urban & Public Affairs. Dr. Cooper serves as the managing director of the Cooper Research Group, a consultancy specializing in customer satisfaction, loyalty, defection, and market segmentation research for the electronics and computer industries. Currently, he provides senior management of domestic and global firms with brand, segmentation, and service analysis. Prior to his academic career, Cooper was responsible for executive recruitment at a Fortune 500 and was an U.S. Air Force Captain during four years of active duty.

Professor of Management at Wittenberg University, is an educator and businesswoman. A winner of the prestigious Leavey Foundation Award in Free Enterprise Education, Schindler specializes in teaching marketing management, creative advertising, and supervising students on applied management projects. Serving as Director of Wittenberg's Center for Applied Management, she coordinates the Small Business Institute (SBI) program, winner of the 1996 National Showcase Award for innovation and excellence, as well as the Project Management Assistance program, in which she has guided more than 300 students doing experiential research and strategic projects for businesses, not-for-profits, and government agencies.
