Lola feels words puffing out her cheeks, bursting inside her, but when she tries to express her special words, her father is leaving for work and her mother is too busy. The school bus, cafeteria, and playground are too noisy for the words to be heard, and the teacher is preoccupied. Lola returns home and sulks until the words unwittingly ``came flying out of her mouth and worked their magic.'' It's no surprise that Lola's special words are ``I love you, I love you! I love you so much!'' Hugs abound among the puffy-cheeked rodents in this mushy, overstated tale and its greeting-card message. Arrived on time, but it got stuck in the mail box (which wasn't Amazon`s fault) which made it a late Christmas gift. Wasn't the type of book I thought it was, but my niece still loved it and she's 4!

Wonderful story and illustrations

I purchased this book in Dutch when I was visiting Holland a few weeks ago. I always purchase a childrens' book for a little friend of mine when I travel overseas. Sometimes I'm able to find something in the native language with an English translation. Or, I buy the native language version and get some help with a translation. I spent quite a while looking through the childrens' section in an Amsterdam bookstore and fell in love with the story (which I thought I understood in spite of my lack of understanding of Dutch) and the illustrations. I got some help translating the book and will be curious to see how close my version comes to the published one! The illustrations are wonderful. I think they will appeal to 2-5 year-olds and also to the adults reading to them. There are some wonderful little details in them.

Some times you just have to say it...........

This book is wonderful! The pictures are great and the story is lovely.
My 7 year old refers to Lola as the little girl whose cheeks keep getting biggger until the words just have to come out.
The book only takes about 5 minutes to read but the message will last a life time. It tells children, and parents, how important it is that we tell the people we love, "I love you, I love you, I love you so much!"
This would be a great book for new parents to begin reading to their bundle of joy right from the start.
A favorite in our home and is sure to be one in your home too.

There is a lot of wisdom here

I just finished the book and I can honestly say it has changed my outlook in life and my frame of reference and has already changed my habits and behaviors. Even as a PhD in economics, I learned some really important insights about economics and human behavior. Specifically, I enjoyed the author's take on the role of consumption and production in our lives. In a modern economy, we use specialization and comparative advantage as a method to organize production but also, unfortunately, as a way of organizing our own lives. However, the author's key point is that an individual's level of happiness/satisfaction is a function of more than just consumption--it is also very much based on producing things--and not just one type of output related to work (e.g., writing memos). So, how does this relate to retiring early? It turns out a lot. Rather than focusing solely on increasing one's income via greater specialization (which typically just leads to a proportional increase in one's consumption levels or even greater debt), the author suggests focusing on reducing consumption--radically. However, this is not a book about denying consumption per se, it is about redefining the role that consumption has in our lives.

This is simply one of the best books I have ever read. It is a life changer. The book has more than paid for itself. As a society, we tend to spend hundreds or thousands to make ourselves feel better (e.g., shopping sprees, "experience" vacations, expensive hobbies with lots of gadgets and gear) all the while returning back to a steady state of "getting by" after a few weeks. Instead, why not find a better steady state.

A comprehensive, fantastic book

This book is for anyone who aspires to create a different reality for themselves. If you are comfortable slaving away at your "career" for the next 40 years, saving 5 to 10 percent of your income with the hopes of one day retiring, then this book is NOT for you. If you work so you can buy things, then work to service the debt required to buy even more things, then this book is NOT for you.

However, if you think that the American Dream is alive and well, yet albeit not in the traditional sense, then you need to read this book. If you can be focused, patient and disciplined to attain a goal that is within reach of anyone who wants it, then you need to read this book. If you dare to be different, if you enjoy finding an alternative to the mundane same ol', same ol', then you need to read this book.

More specifically, this book is for anyone who is looking for the philosophy of living a different lifestyle, one that frees them from the chains of the typical corporate life.

First, let me explain what you will not learn in this book. You will not learn the next great investment strategy. You will not learn how to flip real estate, how to make millions on the Internet or how to turn a small investment in a penny stock into millions. This book is about so much more than getting rich. In fact, it is not even about getting rich, rather it is about becoming wealthy.

What you will learn is a philosophy for living detached from the economy. You will learn how to provide for yourself by being efficient and sustainable. You will learn how to change your perspective so that you can see how it is possible to live on less while living more.

Really, one of the strongest points of this book can be found in the old adage "Give a man a fish, he eats for a day. Teach a man to fish, he eats for life". And that is what the author has done here. You will not find a step by step guide to saving money to retire extremely early. What you will find are the principles required to change your life in order to make the changes required for early retirement extreme (ERE).

If anyone is looking for "21 simple ways to save money" then just do a search in Google and be on your way. This book is not for you...yet. But when attacking a problem such as ERE, which is unconventional to the majority, then unconventional means are necessary. Therefore, the author presents the principles that one can apply themselves in order to live on less and save more.

For me, some of the most positives came with the diverse contents of the book. For instance, the author talks about systems and models and learning common systems so that one can solve their own problems. This reminds me of what Charlie Munger says for investing...that is building mental models of businesses to see how they fit into the larger picture. This didn't make much sense to me until I read this book and it made much more sense.

Another major positive is just how thorough the book is. Just the sheer amount of information covered is impressive. For example, this book covered everything from eating, exercise, housing, transportation, clothing and a myriad of other things. The author had a knack for anticipating what I might question and provided an answer before I could finish my question. For example, when talking about walking in the rain, I had questions about getting wet, which of course was addressed in the subsequent discussion.

The only section that left me wanting more was the section on investing. The author alluded to the fact that he was a stock investor...of which I am one as well. Ironically, had the author said he was a real estate investor I would probably not have the same complaint, since I have no interest in real estate!

Anyways, since the assumption is that one will live in part or in full off their investment income, I was hoping for a bit more discussion on the mechanics of this, particularly from the authors point of view. However, this would have been seen as an "endorsement" so to speak for stock investing, which the author pointed out and we are all aware, there are multiple ways to invest (real estate, commodities, etc.). That said, I am not sure exactly how the author could have satisfied my need for more information on the investing aspect so perhaps this is something that would be better addressed in another book (a sort of sequel...after ERE is attained, perhaps?)

Overall, this book is certainly the most different and most complete book I have read that I can categorize as a personal finance book. The only weak point was a lack, or rather a perceived lack of detail around investing. Of course, this is EASILY overshadowed by the thorough content elsewhere in the book. As the author states, it is simple to learn about investing, one must only be willing to put in the time.

This book will provide the reader with the framework that is necessary to do something extraordinary with their life. This book doesn't give you the answers...it teaches you how to find the answers and in my opinion is much better than just a random collection of tips. I recommend that the novice read something a little simpler before tackling this work, perhaps Your Money or Your Life. Once a small base is built, I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone with the wherewithal to make a major change in their life.

A must read early retirement book!

This gem of a book will be helpful for anyone trying to rid themselves of the consumer mentality. I will keep it on hand to refer to whenever I feel the "need" to buy something. The author gives many alternative solutions to everyday needs that can be had for little or no money. Although, it is most definately not the typical thrift manual that tells you what to buy and what to eat and what to do. It is more of a philosophy of living where the author shares what has worked for him and also offers a complete realm of other ideas as well a how to think about and analyze the many choices for each situation.

Similar topics are covered as in the blog [...] but they are covered much more thoroughly. The book is NOT a simple copy of the blog.

Topics discussed are philosophy of lifestyles and consumer mentality, different philosophies of working, and then onto more practical matters such as transportation, housing, food, exercise, investments. The author also touches on dealing with a spouse that isn't "on board" with the lifestyle and dealing children while trying to live thoughtfully which I found to be very accurate.

This would be an excellent addition to the library of anyone interested in decreasing consumption, retiring early, saving money, and developing wortwhile activities.

YOU need to read this book!!!

I strongly recommend this book for anyone who does not come from a financial or business background -- and must understand the financial health of their employer, even if that employer is themselves. I think local SCORE chapters & SBDCs should make this book required reading for their clients. (Maybe they do - it's been a while since I was a client.)
In my case, I basically understood that there were P&L statements and statements of cash flow, and I had some grasp of how to read them (and balance sheets.) But this book is helping me REALLY understand how the numbers come together. One of the best aspects of it is the inclusion of real world companies that made headlines when they crashed. This book explains what was going on related to their income statements/balance sheets/cash flow.
This book also takes time to explain to you that there's Finance, and "The Art of Finance." The latter is where human beings enter the equation, so to speak, and have room to fuzz up the numbers. Depreciation, for example.
And if you seize up at the thought of reading about depreciation, it's not like that. It is like sitting across the kitchen table having a favorite relative explain to you how it works, in terms you can understand.
In this era of layoffs, if you are an ex-employee thinking about starting your own business, you need to read this book. (among others.) And if you are up to your eyeballs in alligators running your own business, you need to read this book.

Very good overview

I bought this book in order to better understand financial statements and financial ratios for investing, even though the authors wrote it more for managers and not investors. Other books I have purchased for this purpose usually fell into one of three categories: the book defined only the very basics and took such a simple approach with regards to interpreting statements it was a waste of time, the book was for professionals and so far advanced that it didn't bother to have a helpful introduction, or the book started slowly and did a good job at the beginning but then went into overdrive with few explanations after a good introduction and I ended up getting lost.

"Financial Intelligence" is by far the best book from start to finish on interpreting financial statements, what they mean, and how they apply to business that I have read. In the first part of the book, the authors take the reader slowly through each type of statement (income, balance sheet, and cash flow), what the different categories mean on each sheet, and give examples of what these numbers actually mean. Sunbeam, Enron, and Worlcom are used throughout the book as examples where numbers can be fudged or hints of abuse could have been detected ahead of time. The authors continue this dissection further by showing the different financial ratios derived from the statements, what they mean, and how they can be used as indicators of how a business is doing. The last part of the book then deals with how a business actually functions and its realtion to the statments; it shows how a company can show a profit but still go broke, how cash flows are "king", and what working capital is and the cycle it goes through. Again, very good examples are given durng each topic so that the reader can get a good handle on the subject. The only section that seemed out of place was how managers can discount cash flows to try and determine the return on projects; this subject would have been better in a true corporate finance book.

Overall, this is by far the best, simplest book I have read on financial statements and how to interpret them. The things that sets it apart from the others is the straightforward, easy writing style and the great examples given to demonstrate each accounting concept. The best thing is not only did I finally understand the statements and how they are interconnected, but I gained a better understanding of what makes a good company with respect to generating cash and managing inventories. This is a great book for beginners; if you do have trouble with it, try working the Schaum books on financial statements first and then come back.

Financial Intelligence for the clueless

If you don't know the difference between Income Statement vs Balance Sheet or COGS vs Operating Expense, then this book will help you to enhance your knowledge of BASIC accounting and finance.

This book will not help those who have even rudimentary sophistication with finance and accounting.

If you are one of those humanities/engineering type who has been thrusted into managerial position and has never taken a business course in your life, then this book is a good place to start. This book will not make anyone "Financially Intelligent" nor make anyone a sophisticated financial statement analyst.

This book never delves into details of accounting or finance. It doesn't require any sophistication in math except the ability to do arithmetic. You can say this book is somewhat akin to Business 101.

There are no problems at the end of each chapter to solve so this isn't a problem/solutions book.

Although not a bad book for beginners, my concern is that this book may give its readers an illusion that all the golden nuggets of accounting and finance knowledge are contained in this book...hardly.

Best Anatomy Text

I absolutely loved this book. I used this book for my med school anatomy course, and it was more than adequate for my needs. I read this book from cover to cover and I did not need any other resources. The information in this book is presented in a very intuitive way that makes it very easy to pick up. By far my favorite portion of this book was the clinical information. I found that I knew considerably more than my classmates when it came to clinical correlates simply because I read this book.

Overall, this book and the BRS are great for an anatomy student who prefers reading the textbook to lecture.

Incredible anatomy text

Clinically Oriented Anatomy is, without a doubt, the best anatomy text I have come across thus far. And at this point, I've got a shelf full of anatomy books. The writing is very clear and in nearly every passage, easy to follow. Sometimes the descriptions get a bit confusing if you aren't comfortable yet with anatomical orientation (superomedial, aborad, etc) but that will come with any anatomy text - it's part of the process of learning anatomy. The passages are far more easy to read than Gray's Anatomy for Students, and the blue box clinical correlates and sectional summaries do an excellent job tying things together. At the end of a given section, I always find myself coming away with a very solid understanding of the material I've just read.

It has been mentioned in other comments that the illustrations are not the best. And I agree with that. But this is a text, not an atlas, and therein lies the difference. The illustrations are meant to provide general orientation and understanding. The illustrations in Gray's Anatomy for Students are generally better than in this book, but they pale in comparison to any of the real atlases out there in content and detail. For true details and spatial comprehension, you need a real atlas. I'm preferential to Thieme for illustrations (the neurovasculature illustrations are just incredible) and Rohen for photographic images.

Combine a great text with one or two great atlases. That's the only way to truly learn anatomy.

Excellent book plagued with inconsistencies.

This is a very nice, dense, textbook of anatomy for serious anatomy students (e.g. future surgeons) that I would give five stars were it not for inconsistencies and errors that plague the book. No, there are not 12 cervical vertebrae! That is the most obvious error I've found so far. There are several, but considering the size and density of the text the number of plain errors is not grossly out of proportion. The more serious offense this book commits, in my opinion, is to disagree with itself, which can seriously hinder learning the material. Often, Moore will say one thing in the text, another in the summary text, and yet another in the illustrations he refers to! For example, Moore says that the right bronchial artery often is a branch of the 3rd posterior intercostal artery, but the illustration he refers the reader to clearly shows the right bronchial artery as a branch of the FIFTH posterior intercostal artery. In the abdomen chapter, Moore says the arterial supply to the anterolateral abdominal wall includes 11th posterior intercostal artery, but the table and illustration referred to also includes the 10th posterior intercostal artery.

I'm sure that some of these discrepancies can be chalked up to normal anatomical variations, but for God's sake tell us that or we have no way of knowing whether it is an error or variation! Anyway, these discrepancies happen with a high enough frequency that it warrants a two star deduction on an otherwise pristine textbook of anatomy.

Lawyer Cameron Thorne is trying to help an elderly couple keep their home when he finds himself dangerously immersed in an ancient conspiracy. Forced on the run with researcher Amanda, with deadly stalkers from two extremist factions hot on their trail, they begin to piece together information that ties together clues scattered across the Northeast. These clues reveal centuries old efforts by the Catholic Church to surpress information about Prince Henry Sinclair and the Templars that could tear the church apart if they survive long enough to reveal them. Brody delves right into the historical fiction field made so trendy by works like The Da Vinci Code and picks up where they leave off. The novel is extremely well-researched and self-aware, and Brody does a terrific job of wrapping his research in a fast-paced thrill ride that will feel far more like an action film than an academic paper, though both elements are distinctly present. That being said, by the end, the reader is uncertain how much of the theory Brody sincerely believes and how much just makes for a good story. Fans of conspiracy novels will enjoy this but it will be difficult for the average reader to separate this from the Da Vinci Code phenomenon and appreciate this on its own merits.

Great reading, great resource.

Any review of this book by a member of the St. Clair family may be viewed with some skepticism. However, I assure you, I am not a 'true believer' of the Prince Henry St. Clair story. This is why my family held the Atlantic Conference this past Fall in Halifax, Nova Scotia - to find the real evidence of early trans-Atlantic voyaging. There, I was lucky enough to meet David and receive an advance copy of his book.

David's writing style is thorougly enjoyable, but this book goes much further in that it's also a tremendous resource on all matters of this unsuual story of Templar history, the St. Clair family, diffusionism, petroglyphs, and much more. Being a member of the family who may descend from Jarl Henry St. Clair, it's difficult to show me new information, but Mr. Brody does and frames it with a knowledge of the plot lines of history that put it all in perspective.

I highly recommend this book.

An interesting blend of historical fact and theory...

Cabal of The Westford Knight: Templars at the Newport Tower by David S. Brody was another book I got via an offer from a publisher. While the whole Da Vinci Code genre burned out rather quickly for me, this book offered a unique twist in that it was set on American shores. Add in the fact that all the historical sites and artifacts actually do exist, and you get an interesting blend of quasi-history told in a adventure thriller plot.

Cameron Thorne is a lawyer in New England, practicing some low-profile law. But a simple visit from an elderly couple changes his whole life (and eventually the history of the last 2000 years). They are being pressured to sell their home and property to a guy from Scotland who won't take no for an answer. Some research shows that this guy is a treasure hunter looking for lost Templar relics that he believes are buried on the elderly couple's property. But before Cameron can get to the bottom of the guy's story, things start going wrong. The treasure hunter ends up murdered, Cameron's life is threatened by black sedans that try to run him over, his dog is killed, and his brother loses his leg in an explosion prior to starting some digging on the couple's property. Seems that more than one group of people want to keep some secrets hidden forever. Cameron meets and teams up with Amanda Spenser, an attractive English lady who is employed by a group of people charged with maintaining artifacts related to a reported visit to America in the late 1300's by Prince Henry Sinclair. There's a shady element of this consortium, and Amanda decides to throw caution to the wind and team up with Cameron to dig into the story deeper than she's been allowed to in the past. The more they dig, the more attention they attract from secret Vatican groups who are willing to do whatever it takes to stop the two from undercovering a story that would rock the foundation of the organized Church...

While I liked the two main characters in the story, they are really there to help tell a historical story that you have to decide whether it's true (thus a conspiracy) or just a number of things that have been given far more meaning than they ever really had. The main contention is that Prince Henry came over to America with a number of treasures he was protecting from capture by the Roman Catholic church. The main treasure they had was evidence that Jesus and Mary Magdalene were married, had a daughter named Sarah, and that bloodline of Jesus still remains to this day. Add in worship of the "Sacred Feminine", Masonic societies, Kaballist groups, the Knights Templar, and many other murky secrets, and it calls into question all of what our modern day religions are based on. What adds realism in Cabal is that all the artifacts and locations used in the book actually do exist, so the story that Brody weaves is based on tales that have some basis in actual fact.

Do I accept everything in this book as actual truth? Not even remotely. But Brody puts an amazing amount of documented facts in Cabal which helps him to build his story and premise quite well. It worked for me on both an adventure level as well as a "should investigate this a little deeper" angle.

Move Over Da Vinci Code!

Nothing paints a mysterious and suspenseful story better than one based on a profound and ancient conspiracy. It is evident that David S. Brody knew this full well when he penned his excellently written and powerfully depicted novel of intrigue, suspicion and adventure titled, Cabal of The Westford Knight: Templars at the Newport Tower. In this fast-paced and thorough treatise on ancient religious rituals and beliefs, Brody has woven together the ancient past and the curious present to create very compelling and believable tale of discovery and revelation.

Mr. Cameron Thorne is a lawyer going about his business. Representing an elderly man and woman who are trying to keep from losing their home, Thorne runs headlong into a mystery that has been hidden from the outside world for centuries. This is not just some family secret. In fact, Cameron Thorne has uncovered a conspiracy that could actually cost him his life. Long suppressed by the Catholic Church, this conspiracy is one that the Church must make sure remains unknown.

As a result of this tumultuous unearthing of ancient actions and deeds, Thorne has no choice but to strike and run, as his pursuers, religious fanatics from two radical groups, seek to hunt him down and silence him. Fortunately, Thorne does not have to fight this battle of wits and intrigue alone. He has the good fortune to meet one British researcher of ancient artifacts, named Amanda. She too is on the run, tracked by the same groups who are seeking to stop Cameron Thorne. Together, they form a bond and a single-purposed plan to tie the fragments of this deadly mystery together, which they gather from many places across the Northeastern part of the United States. These two realize that their enemies have no choice but to stop the two intruders from unearthing their historical secrets. For, if they Thorne and Amanda are finally able to repaint the entire picture, the truths they will have revealed risk shredding the church into pieces.

There is an obvious and appropriate comparison between Davis S. Brody's excellent work and The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown. Though the strength of Dan Brown's work cannot be minimized, I feel that Brody's work is better researched, more believable and that Brody's style and plot possesses more elements that will entice the reader to want to dig into this book until the very last page. I felt as if I was there with these two very intelligent hunters of ancient lore.

The massive amount of research that had to go into this first-class novel must have been staggering. Coming from David S. Brody, great research and explanations one can wrap their hands around is what he does best. His others books, such as The Wrong Abraham, Blood of the Tribe, Unlawful Deeds and America's History are excellent examples of Brody's ability to take readers into another time and place and to make it come alive in our time, today. He has simply carried this tradition of excellence in writing over into this new novel, Cabal of The Westford Knight: Templars at the Newport Tower. If you love intrigue, conspiracy and history all woven together into an action-packed suspense drama with deadly repercussions, then you will love this story.

Move over Da Vinci Code. There is a new novel, now in print, that bears all the makings of a phenomenal literary success. I highly recommend Cabal of The Westford Knight: Templars at the Newport Tower by David S. Brody. It's a read that will keep you reading until the very end.

A pleasant read

It's romance lite but not terrible. Shallow people and I did laugh when the author used the words, 'cruel twist of fate' or something like that, because it was anything but. How can the characters own homes, have money to buy acreage and build dream homes with no apparent full time jobs? I mean, she owns a bakery, but she has a full time baker helper so she can have time off when she needs it. She also owns a house and she's just 27 years of age? But I decided not to quibble and enjoy the story, such as it is, because it was a pleasant diversion.

I really try to get past grammatical errors in books obviously not professionally edited, but this was just too much. I bought it as a beach read, and my boyfriend asked me to stop reading it because I couldn't stop pointing out the obvious ("turned on her heal," "I got you're message"...). I'm writing this review having stopped at chapter 10 to check the other reviews to confirm I'm not crazy - the writing is really juvenile and therefore annoying as hell. I searched the book for the number of exclamation points and was disappointed the Kindle search couldn't get me a count, because I'm guessed it's a crazy number (several per page, often during character's internal monologues).

I tried so hard to like this book and gave it chance after chance but it was grueling. I liked the idea of the story because it seemed different than your usual romance. However, there are so many grammatical errors, repetitive type, and mixed points of view it is hard to get through. I do not like to give a bad review and I try not to say negative things about someone's work but I do not recommend this book to anyone.
