About the Author
Frank Zöllner wrote his doctoral thesis on motifs originating from Antiquity in the history of art and architecture of the Medieval and Renaissance periods (1987). He is also the author of a postdoctoral treatise on motion and expression in the art of Leonardo da Vinci, published in 2010. He has published numerous works on Renaissance art and art theory, and on 20th-century art. Since 1996 he has been Professor of Medieval and Modern Art at the University of Leipzig. For TASCHEN he has authored the XL monographs on Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo.
Johannes Nathan studied art history at New York University and the Courtauld Institute of Art in London, where he earned his Ph.D. in 1995 with a dissertation on the working methods of Leonardo da Vinci. He has taught at New York University and at the universities of Berne, Leipzig and Cologne. He is the author of a range of publications on art and works as an art dealer and freelance art historian in Berlin.

An Excellent Book Depicting One Man's Genius, With One Caveat

Leonardo Da Vinci is the reason we even have the term "Renaissance Man". He did and was interested in everything - art, science, music, engineering... the talented Florentine may just be the greatest polymath in human history. Most of his genius comes through in his drawings, of which there are a huge number. Taschen has compiled a good number (they admit including ALL of them would be near impossible) of Leonardo's graphic work into this appropriately titled, modest-sized tome.
Leonardo's drawings span many types: pen, metalpoint, chalk, and more, and they are all reproduced in high detail (no low-res digital printings here) on thick, glossy paper. I want to complain about how they are not reproduced large enough (they are all reduced to fit on 8x6 inch pages) but the detail is so high that it almost becomes a non-issue. Interesting essays about Leonardo and some of the works are included at the beginning of each section and shed some light on the man and his genius. My main gripe about this collection is that there is no translation of the words of the man himself. This is presented as a pure art book (it *is* Taschen) but many of Leonardo's drawings are accompanied by notes explaining the pictures and in the case of the mechanical section how the devices being depicted work. Heck, there are a few reproductions in the flight section that are little more than handwritten notes - it would've been nice to have been able to have read them. Layout is good and it is easy to find whatever subject you are looking for. The sewn binding is good and construction is good quality (this book is printed in China).
Overall this is a good purchase for the student of Leonardo Da Vinci, the lover of Renaissance art, or of art in general although beware that you are *only* getting the art. For the words you will have to buy some other books, which may not have the print quality. But for the low price you really should pick this up... considering the quality of the printing it really is a bargain. Recommended.

Beautiful book. What I found most thought provoking with this volume is how people are the same throughout time as evidenced by the inquisitive subject matter, humor and "humanness" of Da Vinci's work. I found this book interesting to the artist, ponderer and regular guy in me alike. I highly recommend this to anyone interested in beautiful designs, complexity, simplicity, humor and exploring the irony of this mans highly relevant work! Bottom line: A cool book well worth checking out.
