All that glitters in not gold. This is a great guide to avoiding investment mistakes in Asia

Analysts and investors tend to focus on income statements and modeling future earnings in their investment analysis. Not enough attention is given to balance sheets and cashflows. Indeed when a stock becomes the darling of the market, analysts often forget to investigate if indeed “all the glitter is really gold”. Tan and Robinson’s timely book – Asian Financial Statement Analysis: Detecting Financial Irregularities -provides a useful reference and guide for analysts and investors who want to dig deeper into financial statements with the view to avoiding investment mistakes.

Providing a systematic framework and using numerous Asian case studies (including Satyam and Olympus), the authors show readers how to systematically look out for warning signs. Spanning seven chapters and written in a user friendly format, the book covers topics like Detecting Earnings Management and Detecting Overstated Financial Position with relevant case studies embedded in each of the chapters to drive home key lessons.

For those who need a refresher on cashflows, Chapter Five which is entitled “Detecting Overstated Operating Cashflows”, explains how cash flows are constructed and how they can be manipulated to magnify a company’s prospects. The chapter on Evaluating Corporate Governance and Related party issues provides an excellent framework for identifying potential conflicts of interest.

The definitive book for Financial Shenanigans in Asia

As a sell-side credit analyst with a focus on high-yield (junk) bonds in Asia, I took a particular interest in the book because the high-yield bonds and equity markets in Asia have plenty of financial irregularities. I was not disappointed. The book is a wonderful read for any investors and analysts who want to invest in Asia companies, both in bonds or equity. What I like are:

- Simple to understand: As mentioned in the introduction, the author writes with the non-technical readers in mind so he explains the concepts in simple, layman language.

- Well-structured book and well-structured framework to look for fraud: I particularly like how he explained and stressed the interrelationship between income statements, balance sheet and cash flows. He gave various examples of ways to "cook the book" and how to detect such activities. In my humble experience of talking to various investors and analysts in Asia, many people overlook this linkage concept and tend to focus on perhaps the income statements or only the balance sheets. The author pointed out that financial irregularities tend to leave tell-tale signs in other parts of the financial statements and rightly so.

- Plenty of great case studies with lessons at the end: Many of those case studies are well-known if you have followed the due-diligence based research firms and short-sellers such as Muddy Water, Glaucus Research, and Citron Research. If you have not, the case studies will be really eye-opening. The author has summarised them nicely without getting bogged down with details. Many case studies are still new to me.

As a professional habit, I tend to look for peer comparison. The closest peer for this book may be the classic Financial Shenanigans by Howard Schilit and Jeremy Perler, which I have with me too. I found the Tan ChinHwee's book a lot more in-depth and enjoyed it a lot more than the latter. It is also Asia-focused and more relevant to my work. The Financial Shenanigans did not touch on the manipulation of balance sheet and the interrelationship between the three financial statements, for example. While it explains more ways to manipulate incomes statements and cash flows, Tan ChinHwee's book gets deeper to the fundamental of what happens to the balance sheet and cash flows when various items in the income statements get manipulated or vice versa.

In addition, Tan's book has a unique and valuable chapter on Corporate Governance and Related-party Issues which are rampant in Asia. Few other books have touched on it as most investment books so far are written by Westerners. Asian analysts and investors discuss about them but few has written a structured report to analyse it.

I highly recommend the book to any investors in Asia companies.

All Accounting Games Must Come To An End - A Logical and Handy Guide for avoiding value traps and investment missteps

Many great (and true) things have been said about ‘Asian Financial Statement Analysis’ by other reviewers here. I have nothing but enthusiasm to add to their comments. I would like to affirm one thing in particular - that this book is simple (not easy) enough to be picked up by a non-finance layman, yet deep enough for industry practitioners to mine it repeatedly for insights. Chin Hwee and Thomas have done a wonderful job laying out the technical jargon clearly and concisely. I would like to offer two of my takeaways from the book:

Firstly, I appreciated the fact that the core of the book lies the reminder that all accounting games will come to an end. At first glance, it may seem disheartening to know that if ‘a company wants to intentionally perpetrate fraud, it can be very hard to detect until it is too late, even for experienced auditors and analysts’ (p22). How then, can the man on the street decide which companies are worth his dollar? This is where ‘Asian Financial Statement Analysis’ steps in - while it does not guarantee a foolproof ability in detecting frauds - it does present a comprehensive checklist, coupled with detailed real world case studies to distill key lessons from. At the root of it, the book reminds us that the built in check and balance utility of the accounting framework will eventually overcome the will of the most determined fraudster. For investors, this brings to mind Warren Buffett’s famous punchcard analogy - there are plenty of companies in the world, why force yourself to invest in a company that you see even a single red flag in? 

Despite it’s appearance as a numbers driven text, the book’s second fundamental lesson is that companies have real human beings at their helm. While it may be tempting for the analyst to lapse into treating each company as no more than numbers on a paper, this approach misses the root issues of fraud. The last chapter begins with authors reminding us that ‘accounting scandals have been around for as long as capital markets’. This is primarily due to the opportunity created to ‘obscure the true economic picture’ of a business when you separate ‘ownership and control’ (p159). Throughout the book, the authors remind us that misaligned incentives will lead to a higher probability of fraud. Analysts must attempt to understand the psychology and the mentality of the management as well as to look for warning signs in the actions and movements of the Board of Directors in a company. Understanding the motivations and correctly judging the character of the management will put an investor in good stead. 

In sum, this book's clear and logical framework of checklists as well as the presence of multiple real world case studies is well worth paying attention to before making any investment. I look forward to future editions with more case studies and lessons to glean from.

Since the late 1970s, India in all her infinite variety has been brought to life as a posse of Indian authors writing in English have exploded onto the scene: Salman Rushdie, Arundhati Roy, Anita Desai, Rohinton Mistry, Vikram Seth, Bharati Mukherjee--the list is legion. But what of Pakistan--that Siamese twin, painfully separated in the partition of 1947? Though neither as numerous nor as well known as their Indian counterparts, Pakistani writers are beginning to make an impression on Western readers. Novelists from Rushdie to the Pakistani Bapsi Sidwha have written about the partition and the bloody civil war that followed; even stories set in modern-day Bombay or Lahore cannot escape the aftershocks of the division. On the surface, Mohsin Hamid's first novel, Moth Smoke, seems more domestic than political drama: narrated from several different perspectives, it tells the story of Daru Shezad's ill-fated affair with his best friend's wife, Mumtaz. But in a country like Pakistan, the personal and the political are difficult to separate, and as the story moves along, the divisions between gender, class, and opportunity provide a not-so-subtle commentary on the fissures that run through contemporary Pakistani society. The novel begins, tellingly, with a historical fragment about the internecine wars of succession that followed the rule of Emperor Shah Jahan (builder of the Taj Mahal): Imprisoned in his fort at Agra, staring at the Taj he had built, an aged Shah Jahan received as a gift from his youngest son the head of his eldest. Perhaps he doubted, then, the memory that his boys had once played together, far from his supervision and years ago, in Lahore. Jump ahead several hundred years to Lahore in the summer of 1998. Childhood playmates Daru and Ozi have just reunited again after Ozi's three-year stay in America. Glad as he is to see his old friend, Daru can't keep his eyes off of Ozi's wife, Mumtaz. "You know you're in trouble when you can't meet a woman's eye," he says. But woman trouble isn't his only problem; he's also addicted to hash, which leads to his dismissal from an upscale job as a banker. Soon Daru spirals out of control into a degraded existence on the fringes of society. Then a young boy is killed in a hit-and-run accident, and he is accused and jailed. Shah Jehan would probably recognize this age-old story of love and revenge playing out once more--this time against the backdrop of the Indian-Pakistani arms race. Hamid subjects contemporary Pakistan to fierce scrutiny in his first novel, tracing the downward spiral of Darashikoh "Daru" Shezad, a young man whose uneasy status on the fringes of the Lahore elite is imperiled when he is fired from his job at a bank. Daru owes both the job and his education to his best friend Ozi's father, Khurram, a corrupt former official of one of the Pakistan regimes who has looked out for Daru ever since Daru's father, an old army buddy of Khurram's, died in the early '70s. As the story begins, Ozi has just returned from America, where he earned a college degree, with his wife, Mumtaz, and child. From the moment they meet, Daru and Mumtaz are drawn to each other. Mumtaz is fascinated by Daru's air of suppressed violence, and Daru is intrigued by Mumtaz's secret career as an investigative journalist; the two share a taste for recreational drugs, sex and sports. But their affair really begins after Daru witnesses Ozi, driving recklessly, mow down a teenage boy and flee the scene. Daru decides then that Ozi is morally bankrupt. But as Daru becomes more dependent on drugs, the arrogance he himself has absorbed from his upper-class upbringing stands out in stark contrast to his circumstances. Daru's noirish, first-person account of his moral descent, culminating with murder, interweaves with chapters written in the distinctive voices of the other characters. One in particular comes vividly to life: Murad Badshah, a sort of Pakastani Falstaff, officially the head of a rickshaw company, but kept afloat by drug dealing and robbery. Hamid's tale, played out against the background of Pakistan's recent testing of a nuclear device, creates a powerful image of an insecure society toying with its own dissolution. (Jan.)

Set in Hamid's native Lahore, Pakistan, this first novel provides a pitch-perfect tale of the destruction of a young man. Socialy unconnected, Daru loses his precarious footing among the respectably employed and falls into an abyss of emotional depression, moral turpitude, and criminal activity. He goes from bank employee to drug dealer to holdup man, while falling in love with Mumtaz, the journalist wife of Ozi, Daru's boyhood best friend and rival. Ozi strips daru of his self-respect, and Mumtaz can never merely be Daru's lover, for she is both liberated and besieged by her own moral ambiguity. With a sure hand, hamid paints Daru, Lahore, the weight of Western materialist values, and evolving and devolving friendships, giving us near-photographic realism softened by the shading influences of well-turned phrases. Moving quickly but inviting prolonged retrospection, this first novel lays bare a human core that festers in its own unremitting heat. Hamid is a writer to watch. For all public libraries.

Fabulous!

"Moth Smoke" is, by far, one of the best novels that I have read in a while -- and I read a lot. The descriptions of Lahore and the societal strata in modern Pakistan are captivating. The author has crafted captivating, multi-dimensional characters, none of which is perfect, but each of which I felt drawn to, in a different way. The story focusses on our "hero," who loses his job, and then makes a series of bad decisions which compound on one another.
This book is marvelously written. Every other chapter is told in a different style, from another character's point of view (the alternating chapters are told from the protagonist's point of view). The changes in tone are extremely realistic, and showcase the author's obivious talent.
I found the first couple of chapters a little confusing, at the outset, but they became clear as the book continued -- in fact, when I finished the book, I immediately turned to and reread the beginning. I have never done this before.
I very highly recommend this book, which is, in reality, a colorful fable.

A Special Read Worth A Special Trip

This is the story of a young Pakistani accused of having an affair with his best friend's wife and killing a boy. In the background, however, are more important issues dangling, like Pakistan's devastating split with India, nuclear testing between the countries, the caste system and rampant poverty.
The prose reads like poetry, the story unfolding like a dream. I was so captivated that, when I accidentally returned my copy along with a bunch of library books, I felt devastated. I called the library as soon as it opened the next day and drove down especially to retrieve the treasure.

Excellent read

A very refreshing novel. On reading it i could not stop but reminisce of the times i spent back home. Hamid hits the social strata in south asia perfectly. On one hand you have the jet-set (mobile phones, pajeros, personal power generators, industrialists, Johnny Walker, yuppie parties) and on the other there are the rest (analog phones, suzukis, power breakdowns, wage earners, russian vodka, gate crashers).
The novel circles around Daru who falls from grace by getting himself fired. After this he finds himself in an endless social decline only to end up with a career in crime. In this endeavor he takes his drug peddler Murad Badshah as a partner in crime. When a long planned heist goes awry Daru finds himself on a trial for a murder he may or may not have committed. ....

About the Author
Captain Scotty Smiley is the Army’s only active-duty blind officer. He lost the use of both eyes when a car bomber blew himself up in front of Scotty’s vehicle. A recipient of the bronze star and Purple Heart, he currently teaches the core course in leadership at West Point. Scotty and his wife Tiffany are the proud parents of two young children.

Doug Crandall served in the Army for thirteen years, including the last five at West Point where he was an award-winning leadership teacher and later the Executive Officer to the Dean. Doug now lives in Richland, Washington, with his wife Stephanie and their children.

4 Hours

I pre-ordered this book at the recommendation of my Military Science teacher, who was CPT Smiley's platoon sergeant at the time of the VBIED attack that took his eyesight. I received it on a day where I was going to be on a plane for 5 hours, after going an entire night with no sleep finishing homework. I opened the book in the airport with no intention of actually reading it, because I had every intention of sleeping on the plane.

I finished the book in 4 hours.

Maybe I have a slightly biased opinion of the book- I have been privileged enough to personally meet CPT Smiley and hear him talk about his experiences, as well as being present at his book signing a few days after I finished it. But regardless, the story is touching, honest, and heart wrenching. I cried on the plane twice, both times having the person next to me choked up describing the book and the parts of it. I also caught myself laughing and smiling to myself, rejoicing where the author rejoiced.

I have truly never read a better book. CPT Smiley's story of the return of his faith, as well as the amazing faith of his wife, is unparalleled. I have recommended this book to EVERYONE I have talked to. You will not be able to put the book down once you start it.

Almost finished reading, and have thoroughly enjoyed hearing (Yes! It reads just as I would imagine Scotty telling his story aloud -- which is nice.) The imagery, thoughts, feelings are well-explained so I "get it." His faith is so real, complete with the mountains and valleys to strengthen and deepen any reader's own beliefs. Plus, my kid sister is good friends with Scotty and his in-laws, so had to finally snatch a copy for our home library. Thank you to Scotty, his family, and all our service men and women everywhere. God bless you always!

Great Inspirational Story

I first heard about Scott Smiley when watching NBA Today while working out one lunchtime. His talk with the 2006 US World Championships basketball team was brought tears to many eyes. Later, when I found that my former Cadet Basic Training squad leader Doug Crandall was co-writing a book with Scotty, I was hooked and have been eagerly anticipating the launch for over a year. The book definitely doesn't disappoint. Scotty pulls no punches on his feelings of isolation and hopelessness but also shows that God has much more in store for him than he can imagine. When I feel down in the dumps, I try to remember Scotty and that I need to get over my minor problems. I recommend this book to anyone and everyone.

YA-A collection of poetry written by the rapper between 1989 and 1991, before he became famous. The poems are passionate, sometimes angry, and often compelling. Selections are reproduced from the originals in Shakur's handwriting, personalized by distinctive spelling and the use of ideographs (a drawing of an eye for I, etc.), and complete with scratch outs and corrections. With the exception of "In the Event of My Demise," all of the pieces are accompanied by typed text, which leaves his spelling intact. Some poems are also accompanied by his drawings. A few black-and-white photographs appear throughout. A preface by Shakur's mother, a foreword by Nikki Giovanni, and an introduction by his manager, Leila Steinburg, in whose writing group the poems were written, complete this unique volume.

In the Depths of Solitude

Dedicated 2 Me

I exist in the depths of solitude

pondering my true goal

Trying 2 find peace of mind

and still preserve my soul

CONSTANTLY yearning 2 be accepted

and from all receive respect

Never compromising but sometimes risky

and that is my only regret

A young heart with an old soul

The Rose that Grew from Concrete by Tupac Amaru Shakur, is made up of 100 poems written by Tupac at the age of 19 before his fame, before getting shot five times and before going to jail for a crime many believe he never commited. This book shows the true Tupac. The sweet Tupac that was pure and never did anything but simply tell the truth. His poems show his honesty. They reveal his true intentions and the beliefs held so stronly in his passionate heart. A preface written by Afeni Shakur, Tupac's mother, starts off the book followed by Nikki Giovanni's foreword and Leila Steinburg's heart-breaking introduction. Steinburg, Tupac's first professional manager and adult friend, shares her treasured experience of meeting Tupac. She is responsible for releasing these poems to the public. Her introduction alone, is sure to leave readers drowning in tears and, if not already, in awe of Tupac. The first poem in the book, "The Rose that Grew from Concrete," is about how Tupac learned to strive for his goals against all of the obstacles in his life that tried bringing him down. "Sometimes I Cry" and "Life Through my Eyes" explain how alone Tupac felt and show his struggles through poverty. In other poems he talks about love, racism, liberty, heartaches and goals. Readers will be able to identify with at least one poem in this book if not all of them. The book is almost like a guide that can make a person feel better and be referred to whenever someone feels alone, lost or confused. It is as though Tupac reached into his hear and brought all his feelings out onto paper. Only great writers are able to express how they really feel and are not scared to speak the truth. But as Giovanni says in her foreword, "I guess it will always be the case that when someone brings a new idea or, mosre accuratley, a truthful idea there will alway be those people who are wrong, who try to shut the truth and daring down." In his poems he talks about real issues and the ultimate truth of life. But since so many do not want to admit Tupac, the young black rapper who rose above poverty and the streets, is actually right, they make up ignorant excuses such as "they are always cursing" and "profane language is bad." Since this book is free of any profane language, maybe now people who were ready with excuses before, will realize that they have no reasons to hide from the truth Tupac shows. They will realize they have no reason to make Tupac seem low just to put him down. Readers who always thought Tupac was deep, will be shocked to see how deep he really was and still is. Tupac's 12 recorded landmark albums and six major motion pictures are still here to remember him by, and now his collection of poems have been released to the public to remember Tupac's beautiful face and precious thoughts as well. Hopefully, readers will realize that the point of reading this book is to understand Tupac and see that was not just another rapper. Tupac writes about Vincent van Gogh's life and accomplishments in his poem "starry Night." He writes about Nelson Mandela, Newton and his mother in some of the other poems. There is a poem called "For Mrs. Hawkins" where Tupac adresses his sorrow for a mother who lost her son, Yusef, to a racist society. He covers subjects ranging from adultery to God. He dedicated and wrote poems about Marilyn Monroe all the way to a girl named April. Anyone who claims to adore Tupac Shakur needs to read this book which is compressed with his deepest thoughts and truest feelings about love, life and even the government. Especially those that are so quick to judge Tupac never giving him a fair chance need to read this book and see Tupac is special. Teachers, counselors, kids everywhere should read The Rose that Grew from Concrete. Steinburg says in the book that Tupac's poems can teach us about universal needs that textbooks rearely adress. Poems such as "and 2morrow" and "Still I Wait for Dawn" explain the need to survive for a better day. "They also teach us that humanity as a whole suffers if anoyone starves. Unfortunatly it took his [Tupac's] death to teach us that when one man dies we all bleed," Steinburg said. If after reading this book, people still think of Tupac as just another gangsta rapper trying to be poetic, then all that can be said is who cares. Besides, Tupac always said "Only God can judge me." Good for him.

A moving poetic legacy

"The Rose that Grew from Concrete" is a posthumous collection of poetry by rapper Tupac Shakur, whose career in both the recording and motion picture industries was cut short when he was murdered at the age of 25. The book includes a preface by Tupac's mother, Afeni Shakur; a foreword by poet Nikki Giovanni; and an introduction by Leila Steinberg, who acted as Tupac's manager. Afeni Shakur notes that the poems in this book were written from 1989-91. Steinberg recalls how Tupac shared poems in a writing circle that she hosted.
The poems appear in this book as photos of handwritten text, with the typed transcriptions on facing pages. This format, combined with some photos of the author, adds to the visual appeal of the book.
Tupac's poems are about love, friendship, loss, social protest, personal goals, and disappointment. His poems touch on many moods: sadness, ecstasy, anger, pride, and hope. Along the way he cites Nelson Mandela, Huey P. Newton, and other figures.
I was particularly struck by "Only 4 the Righteous," a witty and funny poem about rapping; this piece has a great rhyme and rhythm. "The Shining Star Within!," dedicated to Marilyn Monroe, and "Starry Night," dedicated to Vincent Van Gogh, are intriguing tributes to artists whom Tupac describes as ill-treated by society. "God" is a moving profession of faith. I was also moved by "Nothing Can Come Between us," a free verse poem on friendship. "Jada" is one of his best love poems ("u R my Heart in Human Form").
Overall, these poems seem to reveal many facets of the author. In "For Mrs. Hawkins," he writes "I'm a Panther / with the blood of Malcolm in my veins." Other poems look at racism and poverty. But he also writes about things like "First Date Jitters" (in "1st Impressions"). In "What Can I Offer Her?" his voice is full of longing and self-doubt; it is one of many poems that show an emotional vulnerability.
I'm not familiar with Tupac's rap and film work, so I may have approached these poems with fewer preconceptions than some readers. Overall, I think this is a valuable volume. Steinberg notes in her intro that she's used Tupac's writings as teaching tools; I believe that "The Rose That Grew from Concrete" could stimulate some solid classroom work.

The man was a GENIUS!

Anyone who has read this book certainly knows that Tupac was certainly a genius! The man wrote with such raw talent & his poems were so real & beautiful. Some of them made me cry. He was probably the best poet/rapper of our time. The man was human & if you read this book, you'll know that he love, cryed, wanted, needed, & hurt like any human. People didn't know how creative & trouble Tupac was. People think because he was in the rap game that he doesn't have a positive message or talent. The man was a GREAT writer & he wrote about his life as a Thug, & he WAS a thug & he knows the life. But Tupac wanted to rid the world of violence & racism, & if you read his work & listen to his music, you'll notice this. He was true & kept it all real! Unlike most rappers these days. He & Kurt Cobain were the only REAL, RAW talents in the 90's & it's sad they're not with us anymore. They were hear to spread a message, & I hope everyone understands it. RIP Tupac, I LUV you, you were 1 in a 1,000,000!

"Uproariously funny" doesn't seem a likely description for a book on cadavers. However, Roach, a Salon and Reader's Digest columnist, has done the nearly impossible and written a book as informative and respectful as it is irreverent and witty. From her opening lines ("The way I see it, being dead is not terribly far off from being on a cruise ship. Most of your time is spent lying on your back"), it is clear that she's taking a unique approach to issues surrounding death. Roach delves into the many productive uses to which cadavers have been put, from medical experimentation to applications in transportation safety research (in a chapter archly called "Dead Man Driving") to work by forensic scientists quantifying rates of decay under a wide array of bizarre circumstances. There are also chapters on cannibalism, including an aside on dumplings allegedly filled with human remains from a Chinese crematorium, methods of disposal (burial, cremation, composting) and "beating-heart" cadavers used in organ transplants. Roach has a fabulous eye and a wonderful voice as she describes such macabre situations as a plastic surgery seminar with doctors practicing face-lifts on decapitated human heads and her trip to China in search of the cannibalistic dumpling makers. Even Roach's digressions and footnotes are captivating, helping to make the book impossible to put down.

Adult/High School-Those curious or brave enough to find out what really happens to a body that is donated to the scientific community can do so with this book. Dissection in medical anatomy classes is about the least bizarre of the purposes that science has devised. Mostly dealing with such contemporary uses such as stand-ins for crash-test dummies, Roach also pulls together considerable historical and background information. Bodies are divided into types, including "beating-heart" cadavers for organ transplants, and individual parts-leg and foot segments, for example, are used to test footwear for the effects of exploding land mines. Just as the nonemotional, fact-by-fact descriptions may be getting to be a bit too much, Roach swings into macabre humor. In some cases, it is needed to restore perspective or aid in understanding both what the procedures are accomplishing and what it is hoped will be learned. In all cases, the comic relief welcomes readers back to the world of the living. For those who are interested in the fields of medicine or forensics and are aware of some of the procedures, this book makes excellent reading.

Death is not the end

This is a book about dead bodies. As Mary Roach demonstrates in her new book, some bodies go on to do remarkable things, such as helping FAA investigators understand why a plane crashed or helping auto-makers design safety features that save thousands of lives. Others are asked to do nothing more than rot away quietly at a research lab where forensic scientists study decomposition in order to improve crime scene investigation techniques. Some are put to slightly more questionable uses, such as the severed heads used by plastic surgeons to practice their facelift technique (surely not what people had in mind when they donated their bodies to science). Others have had even more bizarre adventures. Cadavers have been nailed to a cross in order to prove the authenticity of the shroud of Turin. Severed heads have been poked, prodded, and given transfusions in an attempt to revive them long after they and their bodies have parted ways.
The anonymous cadavers that are the subjects of STIFF could hardly have asked for a livelier or more sympathetic chronicler than Mary Roach, who has managed to write a book that balances sensitivity and respect with a wonderfully sharp wit. In fact, STIFF is unexpectedly and quite blessedly hilarious, although the humor never comes at the expense at the dead bodies that populate its pages. Instead, Roach uses humor as a kind of psychic safety valve, a vital and much-appreciated tension release from what is, at times, some very intense subject matter.
The real highlights of this book are the sections that delve into some of the more disreputable uses of cadavers. There is a droll and utterly hilarious history of body snatching and a short overview of medicinal cannibalism (human mummy confection, anyone?). ThereÕs a fascinating catalog of the methods historically used to make sure that a dead body was in fact dead. This chapter culminates in what is surely the most spectacularly strange section of the book, in which Roach relates the story of Dr. Robert White, a neurosurgeon who in the mid-1960s performed a series of surgeries constituting what could be considered the first head transplant (or full body transplant, depending on your point of view). A wonderfully engrossing book on a subject most of us are reluctant to talk about.

And you thought death was depressing---

Mary Roach did her homework, and it shows. She has written and information packed, insightful, educational, respectful, and, yes, funny book on what happens to these bodies of ours when we get tired of hanging out in them. I have a newfound respect for all who have donated their bodies in the name of science. Not that I give it a lot of thought, but I figured cremation would be the most logical choice. After reading this book, heck, they can do whatever they want with me. I've always felt an obligation to help others, and if I can continue to do so after I have left this world, then HOORAY.
Meanwhile, expect some odd looks when you are sitting there reading a book obviously about the dearly departed, and you started sputtering, and can't help but laugh out loud! Quirky humour, but that's my favorite kind. Thank you, Mary Roach.
I recommend this book to anyone in healthcare, or the clergy, or anyone even dealing with people who experience loss. It gives you a new perspective.
On the other hand, I will have a hard time ever eating gelatin again...

Stiff

A few nights ago I made a weekend resolution that I'd tackle the much-neglected stack of fiction that teeters on my bedside table. However, while reverentially picking up 'The Body Artist' by Don Delillo, I was distracted by a misplaced reader's copy of Mary Roach's 'Stiff'. Evidently, despite my best intentions, a modest volume of non-fiction had managed to steal it's way into my fiction pile. As morbid curiosity has always been a personal failing, I cheerfully chucked aside 'The Body Artist' and eagerly cracked open Roach's book. For the first time in over two years, I read an entire volume in one sitting.
Roach opens her book with the comparison of death to a pleasure cruise: The way I see it, being dead is not terribly far off from being on a cruise ship. Most of your time is spent lying on your back. The brain has shut down. The flesh begins to soften. Nothing much new happens, and nothing is expected of you....

Stiff is, without a doubt, a bizarre yet remarkably engaging read: not surprising since Roach is such a terrific writer. The author possesses the ingenious ability of being able to make digestible the most repulsive of subjects. Curious, yet not callus, Roach manages to ask-and yes, answer-questions often best left unspoken (keeping in mind public decorum). Furthermore, Roach is hilarious. Quite honestly I was surprised at how many times the author prompted (albeit sometimes guilty) laughter. A neat trick that, keeping in mind the grisly subject matter.
Roach gleefully covers merry topics such as: practicing surgery on the dead, embalmment, body snatching, the process of decay, human crash test dummies, crucifixion experiments, live burials, human head transplants, ecological (read: green) releasments, and everyone's all-time favourite- cannibalism. All the while Roach manages to honour the dead, yet simultaneously takes deliberate pains not to over-glorify the cadaver-science is science after all. One of the most remarkable aspects about Roach's book is her take on cultural definitions of `acceptable behaviour' in relation to the human carcass.
Tonight, inspired by Roach's second to last chapter: Out of the Fire, into the tissue digester: and other new ways to end up... I asked an agnostic friend if, following her death, she'd be willing to have her body ground into dog food. "No," replied my friend, despite her love for all things canine, "...I don't think so- it seems somewhat undignified." I then asked my friend if she'd be willing to have her remains tossed into the lion pen at her local zoo. My friend replied in the positive, "Most certainly, yes that'd be very cool. Maybe even a shark tank..." Vanity to be certain. Meat either way.
A warning to the queasy: Not for you.
