Having been in or directly supported quality assurance and/or manufactuirng operaitons for over 40 years, I personally feel this book ranks up there with some of Crosby's, Deming's, and Juran's work, especially in the areas of understanding fundamental concepts, functional utility and strategic accomplishment. For those who want to drive positive change and increase in QA, operational, and business bottom line contribution, this is a must-have reference.

About the Author

Larry E. Fast is a 35 year veteran of the wire and cable industry and held senior management roles for 27 of those years. At Belden, where he spent his first 25 years, he was one of the youngest Plant Managers to ever take the helm at their flagship plant in Richmond, Indiana. At that time the plant employed over 1200 people in a building of nearly 800,000 square feet. In 1982 he became the senior manufacturing leader of the Electronic Division, a position that he held for 12 years. During that time he conceived and implemented a strategy for manufacturing excellence that substantially improved manufacturing quality, service and cost. He is regarded by some as "the father of manufacturing cells" in bulk cable operations in the industry. Prior to 1987, the only known application of cell technology had been in assembly operations such as cord sets and harnesses. He later started up a new cord set division for Belden and served as the General Manager for 4 years. This experience helped to round him into a stronger manufacturing leader where his passion for excellence continued with a strong customer bias.

In 1997, he joined General Cable Corporation to lead North American Operations as a member of the Corporate Leadership Team. At that time General Cable was known more as a "marketing company" that was frequently handicapped by a grossly underperforming group of manufacturing plants. After two years learning his new company’s culture, people, product groups, systems, etc. he was named the Senior Vice President of Operations. After a 1999 aquisition he had 28 plants reporting to him as well as Corporate Sourcing, Quality, Manufacturing Systems and Advanced Manufacturing Engineering. Later as plants were consolidated to less than 20, he was given expanded responsibility for the North American Supply Chain. This included the addition of Supply Chain Planning and Logistics and three regional distribution centers in addition to the 18 manufacturing facilities in the U.S., Canada and Mexico. These plants produce a diverse range of energy, communications, industrial and specialty wire and cable products.

His vision solidified with a strategy for manufacturing excellence that was embraced by General Cable’s Leadership Team and Board of Directors in 1999. By 2001 the first General Cable plant, (Malvern, Arkansas), won Top 25 recognition as an of Industry Week magazine’s finalist for "Best Plants" in North America. By 2009, General Cable manufacturing plants had been recognized for twenty-one awards honoring nine plants―six of which were named winners of the 10 "Best Plants" in North America. Fast’s plants were the first to achieve three Top 25 awards in consecutive years and only the second company to have twice had three Top 25 winners the same year in the 20 year history of the award. As evidence of the sustainability of the process, in 2009 there were three General Cable plants in the Top 20 for the third time. Also, the very first winner, Altoona, PA in 2003, came back in their first year of eligibility to compete and win for a second time! The six "Best Plants" winners represent the successful execution of the strategy in various cultures, union and non-union plants and in all three countries. The winners are: Altoona, PA, USA in 2003; Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Canada in 2005; Tetla, Tlaxcala, Mexico in 2006, and Indianapolis, IN, USA in 2007. Manchester, NH, USA joined this distinguished list in 2008. Altoona, PA, USA won for the second time in 2009 and Piedras Negras, Mexico joined the list of winners after having been a finalist in two prior attempts. The 2010 final results are not yet known at this writing but two plants have made the "Top 20" finalists list. They are Franklin, MA, USA for the second time and Lawrenceburg, KY, USA for the first time.

Fast holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Management and Administration from Indiana University and is a graduate from Earlham College’s Institute for Executive Growth. He also completed the Program for Management Development at the Harvard University School of Business in 1986.

Fast is a long time member of the Association for Manufacturing Excellence (AME), the Wire Association, and is a former member of the American Production and Inventory Control Society and the American Society for Quality. He also has served as a Section Chair for NEMA, the National Electrical Manufacturer’s Association. He has served on university advisory boards including Indiana University/Purdue at the I.U. East campus in Richmond, Indiana and the School of Applied Sciences at Miami University, Oxford, Ohio. From 2001 to 2007, he served on the Industry Advisory Board for the Tauber Manufacturing Institute at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. In 2009 he joined the Board of Directors, SE Region of AME. Since his retirement he has also joined the team of judges for Industry Week magazine’s "Best Plants in North America" competition.

Fast has spoken at various manufacturing excellence events such as Industry Week’s Best Plant’s Conference, Manufacturer "Live", AME Champions meeting and the international conference on Lean Manufacturing sponsored by Reliability World. He has also been published in National Productivity Review magazine for the turnaround story at Belden Wire and Cable and was featured in two October, 2006 articles in The Manufacturer and in Mexico Watch for the outstanding track record leading change at General Cable Corporation. Fast is now Founder & President of Pathways to Manufacturing Excellence, LLC, a consulting company based in Gainesville, GA.

Quick read - Very Useful

I like the book. It is a pretty quick read. The principles are well defined and I have found it useful to focus on each area using this book as a guideline.
Every once in awhile the author uses words or concepts that he assumes the reader is familiar with which had me chasing into other books but that's not really a bad thing if you are serious about this profession.
Thank you Mr. Fast for passing on a piece of your life's experiences. You have already helped me tremendously in my job.

This book is wonderful providing a full range of counselling interventions and approaches for dealing with Grief. I've used this a lot. I found it really helpful as the book is broken down by theory...so you can get CBT approaches or Solution focused etc. Excellent organized, written and easy to read adn highly useable.

I work with many people grieving a variety of losses, from death to job loss, infidelity, divorce, Friday furloughs, etc. This book is informative and gives current theoretical approaches as well as a plethora of clinical strategies to address client's grief and loss issues. I turn to this book every time I have a client with grief issues.

YA-- Hayden's classroom of emotionally disturbed children consists of Reuben, a boy suffering from autism; Philip, born to an addict mother and now in foster care; Jeremiah, a foul-mouthed fighter; and Jadie, a girl who never speaks and walks with such hunched posture that she appears to be doubled over. Through patience and determination, Hayden gains Jadie's confidence and gets her to speak, but with her conversation come tales of sexual abuse and ritual acts too horrifying to believe. When Hayden goes to the authorities, the community is reluctant to accept the possibility that Jadie is telling the truth. There are three explanations for her macabre and graphic disclosures: she is either a psychotic child beyond help, a victim of satanic rituals, or she has been used, along with her sisters, to make pornographic films. The conclusion is frustrating because readers never learn which of the three speculations is the truth. Dark, interesting, yet true

This is the first book I've read from author Torey Hayden. While I was reading, it reminded me of author Dave Pelzer's book, "A Child Called It." While the content may be similar in that children are affected by the actions of adults, Ghost Girl is clearly different. As Hayden went on to describe the dialogue and experiences Jadie had gone though, there were many times when I was forced to set the book down in order to contemplate what I was reading. The pictures I created in my mind made me sick to my stomach. I could not even fathom what Jadie had to endure. Yet Hayden had the compassion to do what was right, which was to just care. Hayden's caring is what saved Jadie and her sisters from continued abuse. Yet questions went unanswered: were Jadie's descriptions psychotic or from real experience dealing with the occult and Satanism? We may never know and I really don't think it is the main point of Hayden's book.
I think Torey Hayden's writing is complete and very intriguing. She has already become a favorite author for education and I look forward to reading her other books of children with special needs.
NOTE: While this book will keep the reader interested, it can be very dark, horrid, and at times, scary.

engrossing read - please write follow up

Once again, Torey Hayden has written a captivating account of her experiences with a fascinating and trouble young child. As usual, the author's loving attention and professional insight help uncover hidden layers of traumatic emotion causing this child's unusual behavior. I believe the girl is the real star of this book though. Her behavior and attempts at healing in reaction to apparently appauling abuse is a testament to the depth and complexity of the human psyche.
While the epilogue paints a happy ending for the girl, I can't help but feel frustrated with the final chapters in the book -- at how long it took even a smart sensitive teacher to take seriously a girl's graphic descriptions of sexual abuse, at the entire professional community's naivete concerning the existence of ritual child abuse groups in this country, and the inability of the police to solve the case. For example, the girl demonstrates competence at operating video equipment (something her parents did not own in the 1980s) and describes being abused on TV, but the adults interpret this as a sign of mental disturbance, pretending to be in a TV show, not her familiarity with the making of child pornographic videos. I'm sure all the readers of this book are craving a follow-up book on the girl, who is now a healthy adult who apparently sticks to her story of ritual abuse.

Harrowing, Yet Inspiring

This is the incredible story of Jadie, a young girl who refuses to speak until her dedicated teacher convinces her to do so. Once she does, the story that comes out of her mouth--the story of her home life--is one that will shock, sadden, enrage, and leave the reader in disbelief. I could not put this book down. Jadie's character has a certain mystique about her when she does speak and as her story starts to unfold. It is intriquing and frightening as you ask yourself whether the horrors she's telling of are real or the result of a vivid imagination. Jadie's irrepressible spirit; her desire to tell her story, and her seemingly split personalities were incredibly fascinating, and I was inspired by the story of someone who has survived such horrific abuse, and had the courage to blow the horn on it as well. I will warn you, though...when Jadie begins to tell the story of the abuse she's suffered, the book leads you through several very graphic scenes of sickening sexual abuse. This book is not intended for children or those who are easily upset by stories of child abuse. There are also some statements that offer a disturbing look into the world of satanic cults, and many of those statements talk about rituals that turned my stomach. All in all, though, this was an incredible, eye-opening and inspiring story. It reminded me of the sacrifices that teachers make to each child in this country, each and every day.

More of a basic calligraphy book

This book didn't really work for what I bought it for - handdrawn fonts. It's called "Hand Lettering" but its really a calligraphy book. Calligraphy uses special markers or pens with slanted nibs. I wasn't looking for any calligraphy info, only typefaces that I could re-create by drawing them by hand. I found a lot of the artwork and examples a little dated....like something you would be taught in a high school calligraphy class. I also bought Scrapbooker's Handwriting Workshop which was more helpful - it has lots of typefaces/fonts that are suitable for copying by hand.

Hand Lettering

This is a particularly wonderful book. I am a novice calligrapher and have been practicing italic handwriting for several years. Once I started using this book, I am writing many different kinds of alphabets, all useful in my card making hobby. The authors are excellent teachers (I wish I could take classes from them), and their instructions are easy to follow. This is the best calligraphy book I have ever seen, and I have bought it as a gift for others.

What a fun book...it's VERY newbie friendly...I have hand lettered for years but
wanted to see what was new out there, and there were a few fun alphabets that I had
not seen before. There are MANY ideas for someone new to hand lettering, lots of
great full color photos of things to make, where to use the alphas, and of course
directions on HOW to make the letters. It really is geared towards a new-2-letting
person, but I am keeping it cause you never can have too many fun art related books,
can you???

Taubes Delivers Shot Across The Bow Challenging Big Sugar With Facts And History

If an investigative journalist could choose any other career to use their talents and gifts, then it would most likely be that of an attorney. They possess the natural skills for digging deeply into arguments and making compelling statements for the prosecution. That's precisely what New York Times bestselling author and science writer Gary Taubes has done in his soon-to-classic book The Case Against Sugar. This book has been sorely needed for many years and Taubes is the perfect author to articulate what needs to be shared as only he can.

For fans of Taubes who have read his two previous nutritional health classics--Good Calories, Bad Calories: Fats, Carbs, and the Controversial Science of Diet and Health and Why We Get Fat: And What to Do About It--you already know his position on the negative implications of carbohydrates on the current state of chronic disease and health decline. In The Case Against Sugar, Taubes takes direct aim at the biggest culprit carb that is plaguing the health of those dealing with obesity, diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and more--it's SUGAR!

Some people might scoff at the idea that we need an entire book all about the dangers of consuming sugar claiming that it's obvious to most people that sugar is not good for you. But do they really know that? Walk into any grocery store, sporting event, amusement park, fast food restaurant, and anywhere else food is sold and you'll mostly see nothing but ambivalence regarding sugar from a great majority of the population based on their purchasing habits. Sugar has become so pervasive in our food supply that it's next to impossible to find anything to eat that doesn't have sugar in it (even spaghetti sauce, baked beans, yogurt, BBQ sauce, ketchup, fruit juice...the list goes on and on!).

As I just noted, sugar has become so ubiquitous in our society now that people don't even think twice about consuming it while simultaneously greatly fearing dietary fat as something they shouldn't consume. Taubes addresses the idea of how we became propagandized to believe fat is the enemy in our diet. Since the publication of The Case For Sugar, we've now learned that The Sugar Association paid off Harvard scientists to squelch the connection between sugar and heart disease and vilify saturated fat. It's fairly easy to see why The Case Against Sugar is needed now more than ever before. (Read the September 12, 2016 New York Times column on this topic entitled "How The Sugar Industry Shifted Blame To Fat": Google the title and you'll find it!)

If you're familiar with the work of Taubes, he goes very deeply into the subjects he writes about to get to the very core of the main issues at hand. He explains how we got to where we are today and puts the primary blame for the main instigator of pretty much all modern disease on sugar. That instigator is a condition known as insulin resistance (IR) where the pancreas has to work so hard at pumping out insulin to cover all the sugar we've been consuming that it's become worn out and doesn't function as it was intended anymore. The result of this is a much more difficult path to keep blood sugar and insulin levels normalized that requires people with IR to have to significantly cut down on the foods that turn to sugar in the body--all culprit carbohydrates. Or, as I like to refer to them, crappy carbage!

One of the excellent points Taubes makes in The Case For Sugar that will hopefully begin a public conversation of this concept is the modern argument against sugar has everything to do with "empty calories" they supposedly contain and not the hormonal effects it is having on our bodies. Bringing in the calorie argument gives license for people to continue eating sugar in the mythical "moderation" (which Taubes is very skeptical and no fan of). But the reality is the role sugar plays in your health goes so much deeper than their caloric effect, particularly for those people with insulin resistance where the damage is done. I know this fact all-too-well as someone who used to drink 16 cans of Coca-Cola daily before discovering these principles Taubes is sharing in his books requiring me to eat a low-carb, high-fat, ketogenic diet for the rest of my life in order to stave off the health consequences of the damage that happened to my body from eating sugar.

Methodically looking through all the faulty science used to defend sugar, Taubes again goes into bulldog mode pulling back the curtain on the Wizard of Oz to expose the facade we have been led to believe about sugar. What's most interesting is there were researchers like John Yudkin who understood these problems with consuming sugar way back in the 60s/70s, but he was quickly ignored and blacklisted by those who wanted to push the anti-fat message as a means for propping up sugar-peddling companies that stood to greatly benefit financially from the ignorance of the general public. And it worked because junk food full of carbohydrates is the norm on store shelves today! Now that we realize that Yudkin was right all along, Taubes is attempting to explain where we go from here to undo all the nutritional indoctrination. It's gonna be a steep uphill battle, but this book could very well be the beginning of the unraveling of the sugar ruse.

The Case Against Sugar should absolutely be required reading of every doctor, dietitian, teacher, parent, and anyone who wants to hear the truth about sugar that they're just not gonna get from mainstream media or any of the so-called leaders in the nutritional health industry. Gary Taubes has put his stamp on this subject as only he can presenting the evidence for the reader to absorb and come to their own conclusions. After reading this book, you can still choose to eat sugar. But at least you'll be armed with information about the entire picture on this subject instead of the one-sided view we've dealt with for the past 50 years. Consider this book the first shot across the bow challenging The Sugar Association head-on with facts and history that cannot be refuted. Now it's simply a matter of undoing decades of misinformation to stem the tide of chronic disease we are currently living through because of the promulgation of sugar.

another history of nutrition by Taubes

Reading Taubes' earlier book Good Calories, Bad Calories forever changed the way I see food. The Case Against Sugar was a great refresher that sugar is the main dietary evil I need to root out. Did you know that one of the reasons cigarettes are so addictive is that SUGAR is an ingredient? I didn't either!

Taubes' style is factual with a lot of emphasis on the history of nutritional science. The backstory is fascinating and helps you understand why these facts have not been readily accepted in pop culture or among medical professionals. It can get technical in some parts, but it's not anything a lay person can't understand with careful attention and slow reading. There is no judgement, just facts. Taubes leaves the reader to make application of what he shares.

SUGAR kills

I always think when I read these things that support Dr. Atkins now 40 year old beliefs, that I wish he hadn't died before he was vindicated. Sugar in all it's forms will kill you, will cause inflammation - basically, the more you eliminate it from your life the better off your health will be. Gary Taubes does a great amount of research in this book, like he has his others and shows us how we've been sold a bill of goods and how pervasive the use of sugar is in our foods.

It's a good read, though weighty, if you've been living a low carb, high fat life - he has a lot you can use to shut your detractors down. I recommend reading this, for your own health.

Expensive but worthwhile

When I initially bought this book, I was disappointed that it appeared to mostly concern very large gardens and public venues. However, after a few years and thousands of dollars of plants later, I consider this book to be a great value for medium to small gardens.
