BEATLES MUSIC THEORY NIRVANA!!!!!

As a musician, songwriter and Beatles fanatic having read easily 100 books on them, this book to me was the absolute holy grail!!

If you have ANY musical training at all and want to understand the Beatles' musical magic -- or use the Beatles music to learn about music theory -- this book delivers in spades! Unlike the more "professorial" Beatles music theory books (e.g Everett, Mellers) -- which sound more like doctoral dissertations and try to shoehorn Beatles into CLASSICAL-music analysis terminology and constructs, this book is written BY a rock musician FOR a rock musician and by a TRUE Beatles afficionado and connoisseur -- for both those of us who share his obsessions and those who don't. If you are a fellow rock or amateur musician who is Beatles-obsessed you will have found a TRUE kindred spirit -- and if you're not, you will learn about the more esoteric questions and quirks of Beatles music that have obsessed us connoiseurs since we first started playing guitar.

To wit: an entire CHAPTER devoted solely to that opening ringing chord of "A Hard Day's Night!"

In any case, you will gain a whole new appreciation of the Beatles' innovation, choices and techniques, not to mention an amazing bag of tricks to use if you are a songwriter.

There is an appendix that provides an unbelievably clear and concise overview and foundation of BASIC MUSIC THEORY for the absolute beginner. What's unique and great about that is that it uses BEATLES SONGS as examples of EVERY POINT. What better way to understand the basics? And then the rest of the book takes off from there.

For his sources, the author has studied -- and cites -- not only the standard Beatles releases, but bootlegs, and he even studied their finger positions on performance videos, interviewed top Beatles tribute bands to see what chord inversions they use, etc. etc. That's how thorough it is.

My ONLY caveat would be that if you have NO musical training at all and NO inclination to study a LITTLE music theory -- it might be too technical for you. But if you are even SLIGHTLY inclined toward those things -- even a guitar player who only knows a few chords -- and loves Beatles songs -- it will be an amazing opportunity to grow your understanding of music theory using Beatles' music as your school and a wonderfully clear-writing author as your teacher.

I spent a lot of money on this book and once I started reading it, I would gladly have spent almost any sum. It is PRECISELY the book I'd always longed for someone to write -- and even though it took 30 years -- someone finally did! If this type of material interests you -- don't hesitate for a nanosecond -- cough up whatever it costs. If my house were burning down and I could only save one book...yup...Songwriting Secrets of the Beatles.

This could be...and I'm not saying this lightly...the greatest book ever written about music. Any musician that wants to improve their songwriting ability needs this book and a couple months. That's really it. Bravo Dominic, your work has inspired me almost as much as the Beatles themselves!

This is an amazing, exhaustively in-depth book on the music of The Beatles, and the theory behind it. I'm a self taught musician who wants to learn enough theory to know what I'm doing, and I'm also a huge fan of The Beatles so I figured this book would be a great start. It seems to me that this book presupposes a knowledge of theory, so I would recommend getting book on the basics of theory before diving into this book, because there's A LOT to wrap your head around. All in all I feel it's a great resource for Beatles fans and theory junkies alike.

HVAC Systems Design Handbook Review

As a newcomer to the HVAC industry I found the book to very informative...it was presented in such a way, however, that makes it very hard to read. SMACNA puts out a few manuals that are less "dry" and a lot easier to read. I would recommend that anyone who is interested in this publication to have some general knowledge of the HVAC industry in order to make understanding this book easier.

Not as expected.

I found this book informative rather than practical as implemented by publisher to be a working tool primarily for desingers. People with basic knowlege of HVAC might enjoy reading this book to get some general but not in-depth engineering knowlege of HVAC systems, but there is not much for designers who need analytical information and knowledge of calculation procedures.

This book is aimed at the engineering design professional but I found it to be a major disapointment. There are a number of good texts available on this subject but this one, like so many of Roger Haines' other books, is a superficial overview with little if any practical information.

About the Author

Nancy L Craig is Professor and Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. She is a recipient of the Johns Hopkins University Alumni Association Excellence in Teaching Award, as well as a Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and a member of the National Academy of Sciences.

Orna Cohen-Fix is a Senior Investigator at the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, Adjunct Professor at Johns Hopkins University, and the Co-Director of the NIH/Johns Hopkins University Graduate Partnership Program. She is the recipient of a Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers and an Association of Women in Science Mentoring Award for her work on promoting the retention of women in science.

Rachel Green is Professor of Molecular Biology and Genetics at and Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, and a member of the National Academy of Sciences. An awesome "central dogma" book.

I'm comparing this book (MB) to Molecular Biology of the Cell (MBoC), which is probably my favorite textbook of all time.

This one (MB) is not as much of a general cell biology book as it primarily covers only the elements of the so-called "central dogma" of molecular biology. DNA replication and transcription into RNA, and RNA translation into protein, plus all the regulatory aspects of those processes (as well as chapters on the cell cycle, DNA repair, transposable elements, and genomics), unlike MBoC which spends more or less the first half of the book on those topics and then devotes the second half to the further biology of the Cell, covering things like membranes, energy conversion, cell signalling, cancer, and the immune system.

Both books do a good job of introducing the Biochemistry you need in order to understand what follows. MB has a great first chapter that gives an overview of the book (basically "Molecular Biology in 30 pages").

Where MB shines though is in its more in-depth coverage of the topics it touches on. It devotes about twice as many pages to these topics as the current edition of MBoC does. MB is also wonderfully illustrated and does a good job of visually explaining things. MB contains lots of "experimental" panels that talk about how various aspects of the cell were discovered.

Both books include chapters on techniques for manipulating the genetic material in cells. I thought the current edition of MBoC felt slightly more up to date, but both books are very current editions with a good overview of the current state of the art.

Both books are quite readable. I would give the edge to MBoC here in terms of ease of reading as MB seems just a bit denser to me. But both are very easily understandable.

I can highly recommend this book (MB) to anyone looking for an in-depth coverage of the central themes of molecular biology (how DNA and genes work). It goes pretty deep for a first course, but it does not presume much of any background knowledge so it would be an appropriate book to introduce someone to the subject who wants to understand things very thoroughly.

If I had to choose only one or the other I'd still prefer the new MBoC edition due to its much broader coverage of cell biology (it's also 50% larger and twice as expensive though), but this one is really excellent at what it covers. I bought it after previewing the "Look Inside" pages and I have not been disappointed.

If the mechanics of the functioning of cells interests you then you'll probably be fascinated and really enjoy the depth of knowledge you gain from this book, and it's something you'll want to keep and probably use frequently as a reference if you progress further in the study of biology. If you find the details tedious, then this one might be more depth than you want, and something like Essential Cell Biology, 4th Edition might serve you better.

Currently this book is not available as a Kindle "Print Replica" e-textbook yet, where the other titles mentioned here are.

Really happy with the book, easily a 5+ star experience.

Excellent illustrations/case studies to help clarify more difficult points

Though review of genome function to include current available information re: RNAi, CRISPR, etc. Excellent illustrations/case studies to help clarify more difficult points. Excellent terminology and index. Will be kept as reference for anticipated studies with the understanding that information changes and expands daily but the basic information will remain the same.

The Warrior Vampire

Naya is a bruja and is drawn to the song of magic. Because of her abilities she's devoted her life to tracking down magic, specifically dark magic and those who take it and wield it without permission. She's seen a lot in her century plus of life, but recently she's noticed the magic getting stronger and she's doubly surprised when she comes across a vampire (a species long thought extinct) who seems to have been infused with dark magic.

Ronan left Michael in The Last True Vampire to go help his sister who called him with a somewhat cryptic message regarding a vampire relic she found. The Warrior Vampire picks up with Ronan seeing Naya for the first time and immediately realizing she's his mate. The bad thing is Ronan's memories are pretty much blanked out from the time he left Michael until he woke up chained to Naya's bed.

I'll admit, when I first started reading this book, with the way Ronan appears very out of sorts, I thought I had missed something at the end of The Last True Vampire. But really this was a clever way for Kate Baxter to pull readers even more into the story, because readers, like Ronan, will want to figure out what exactly happened to him. And the way his story coincides with Naya's investigation into the dark magic fits really well together.

I really loved Naya's character. She's a tough chick. She knows her magic and she knows how to get the job done. The problem she faces is that she's part of a people where the men are shifters and the women can track magic. It is tradition for the women to go out and face the dangers of magic, but because female's are rare, when the time comes the women must take a mate and ensure the continuation of the population as the case may be. Naya loves what she does despite the dangers involved. She doesn't want her relationships to be forced upon her and she doesn't want them to come at the expense of her job. So to say she isn't thrilled to find out she's destined to mate Ronan is an understatement.

I loved the overall message that Ronan tries continually to convey to Naya throughout this book: Love doesn't mean losing yourself. And Kate Baxter goes a long way to show that and to reinforce that sentiment a lot through Ronan's actions towards Naya. His instinct is to protect her from dangers, but he never inhibits her from doing her job. It's about partnership and give and take. And there's also the fact that the chemistry between these two characters just jumps off the page. I think The Warrior Vampire has double the heat factor of The Last True Vampire.

I was pretty surprised that the majority of this book is removed from events happening back with Michael in LA. Kate Baxter does a great job with small scenes reminding readers that there is a lot more going on in this world than just what Ronan is experiencing, but not enough to take anything away from his story. I liked the reminders kind of keeping us on track of what I'm assuming is the set up for other characters's stories. You know you've got a good series going on when I'm even interested in getting a story about the villain's history.

Overall I think Warrior is stronger than its predecessor, but that may just be because first books have the task of dealing with the world building and set-up of things to come. With these first two books, this series has been really strong. Based on events in this book, I'm assuming we have Jenner's book to look forward to next. If you haven't yet checked this series out, you can follow along pretty well if you happen to pick up Warrior first, but I think it helps to read them in order.

Kate Baxter continues on with the Last True Vampire series with absolutely stunning story-telling in The Warrior Vampire we met Ronan Daly in the previous book as Michael Aristov’s right hand man, a lot happened in that book and some of the changes directly involved Ronan, especially towards the end.

The Warrior Vampire is Ronan’s story, and boy was it a good one. I was pulled in from the beginning, and I liked that the author took us away from Los Angeles for most of this one and gave Ronan his story in a different setting, you are given an indication that this may be the case at the end of the last book as Ronan sets out to find his sister Chelle.

I really like that the author gives us really strong female leads in this series as well, Claire in the previous book and now Naya in this one. Both were strong and assured in themselves, and although there is vulnerability there it is not played upon and it added to the characterizations in a positive light rather than making either women seem weak or clingy.

”I love a female with a violent streak.”

Naya gives as good as she gets, the verbal sparring in the early stages of the book between her and Ronan is really enjoyable, and the dirty-sexy chemistry between them from the get-go positively vibrates through your Kindle.

”Whats it like?”
“Whats, what like?”
”Drinking my blood.”
“It’s Everything”.

There is a bit of a slow burn going with this one, but I liked that, Ronan’s past allegiances really do rear up and affect his present connections, and Naya is dealing with a whole set of issues herself in that her Pod and the rules that she is governed by do not leave room for a relationship in any way, shape or form with a Vampire. Magic is being used and for nefarious purposes and it is very much something that she needs to be dealing with. I found it refreshing that the author worked through everything at a steady pace rather than finding a quick resolution to some of the more important tropes and moving on, the suspense, the romance and the character development all worked in-line with the overall pacing of the book and the development of the rest of the story-line going on around them.

”It’s like finding peace after centuries of restlessness.
I don’t want to want you…
I can’t afford to need you.
Especially now.”

The story does continue to play out back in Los Angeles and we are given snippets of it through Claire, Michael and Jenner to name but a few. This is my only small niggle in that due to quite a large time lapse since reading The Last true Vampire my mind is a tad fuzzy on the whole Sortiari element of the story now. It didn’t really impact my enjoyment of this one though, but I did at points wish I could remember the relevance of them especially in the latter stages of this book.

”I’m lost to you… Addicted. I don’t have any control when it comes to you.”

From the snippet we are given at the end of this instalment, The Dark Vampire is due in 2016, and I am guessing it is Jenner’s book, the guy pops up quite a bit in this one, and from what you see it is evident that he is struggling with his newly turned Vampire status and the uncontrollable urges that come with it, I think the author may have another hit on her hands if she offers up another strong female to take him on!

I am still wrestling with myself on how to rate this book, the story was addicting (I usually got to bed around 10-11PM, I stayed up until almost 2 AM finishing the book) BUT (huge BUT) this is a book of 382 pages and for the second time in a week I am given a really good story surrounded by MAJOR pages of sex filler and just plain old filler/fluff. I scanned/skipped huge portions of this book and lost nothing of the great story. Almost a 5 Star story but maybe it is just my mood but I am getting a bit p$$ed with these doorstops. This book was 383 pages and it would still have been a great story with 250-280ish pages, the sex was hugely overdone (I could almost use this same rant to describe Sweet Ruin) and then there were just pages of "I could look at him/her all day/forever/etc" and pages of nothing but pages. I gave Sweet Ruin 4 Stars for the story, maybe I should do the same to be fair but in my present mood I want to give it 3. If you don't mind scanning and skipping, these a BOTH great stories but you are paying for those extra pages.

Bottom Line: I gave it 4 Stars because if I did less I would have to back up and give every other doorstop with a great story 3 Stars, I have to say if a book keeps me awake into the wee hours to finish it, it must be doing something VERY right since I love my sleep :)

Camus eclipses nihilism and brings news of a new age!

I first became interested in Albert Camus after reading a quote from The Rebel online. "I rebel, therefore we exist" was the quote, and I must admit that, after reading the book, there has never been anything truer written. When I was in a bookstore a few months ago I found a copy of The Rebel, which is apparently a rare sight these days, since The Rebel is often ignored. Camus is one of the most famous writers of the 20th century, so why would one of his masterpieces be ignored?

It has been ignored, from what I can gather, because it is a philosophical work in which Camus pulls no punches and examines thoroughly why the excessive crime and violence of our era exist. Camus explains how, in both philosophy and politics, the reigning attitude has been one of nihilism for the past two centuries. This nihilism, being necessarily without an aim, leads to dictatorship and gross amounts of suffering for humans, no matter what principles it claims on the surface. Camus systematically destroys those who have used the philosophies of Hegel, Nietzsche, Marx, surrealism, u.s.w., to justify their murderous plots.

Camus proposes that instead of nihilism and murder, we take to heart the ancient concepts of moderation and responsibility. Camus' destruction of modern governents and his proposals of these ancient ideas seem to have made this book unpopular. In this era of oppression, it is easy to ignore what offends us or makes us think. Camus gives the reader no choice. He must either raise a defiant fist to the giants of power, or he must give way to these minds that are utterly without scruples. I admire Camus deeply because of this--he has summed up the ideas I have been carrying around for years--but some will be deeply hurt by his comments. I leave you with a final thought: everyone is partly to blame for the state of the present and the future. You have the choice to make it either good or bad.

Eloquent and Enlightening

Camus' The Rebel is the first book of his that I had the great pleasure of reading. Eloquent and enlightening, The Rebel speaks to me in a way that no other 20th century philosophical work has, at least in its entirety.
The Rebel is both an introduction of new ideas and a history of previous ideas and events: Camus' scholarship is unbelievable in the area of revolt. It spans from early greek history and earlier all the way through to the French Revolution and beyond.
I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone concerned with spiritual, historical, or any kind of rebellion - and really to anyone who concerns themself over the human condition.
