Interesting

I bought this book in order to get an insight into the world of script readers which it turns out is being taught as a course on a university level in the UK. For a screenwriters like me this is important to know since our whole career might depend on professional script readers, at least in Europe.
I found the book informative and it comes up with some good points on steps in the screenwriting development process.
It's good to know that the people who are reading scripts for production companies, film funds and TV networks are getting a proper knowledge of how a script works and is written, but I must say that I'm a little bit worried that all the standards and formulas that the book presents might make it harder for original stories to find production in the future. Nevertheless that seems to be the trend of the film business in both Europe and USA these days, that requires stories to fit perfectly into certain genres for the right market and there doesn't seem to be much that anyone can do about it.

SOUTH END PRESS: Your work on radical black feminism has been an inspiration for many young feminists of color, and you yourself were in your early 20s when you wrote your first book, Ain't I a Woman. What differences do you see in the political and cultural climate that young progressive activists face today, compared to when you were formulating your own politics?

BELL HOOKS: One of the major differences I see in the political climate today is that there is less collective support for coming to critical consciousness-in communities, in institutions, among friends. For example, when I was coming to feminist consciousness-as one aspect of my political consciousness-at Stanford University, there was a tremendous buzz about feminism throughout the campus. Women were organizing in the dorms, women were resisting biased curriculum, all of those things. So, it really offered a kind of overall support for coming to consciousness, whereas what so frequently happens now in academic settings is that people feel much more that they don't have this kind of collective support.

SEP: What do you think has contributed to that change?

BH: The institutionalization of Black Studies, Feminist Studies, all of these things led to a sense that the struggle was over for a lot of people and that one did not have to continue the personal consciousness-raising and changing of one's viewpoint.

SEP: Could you describe some of the influences on your own politicization? In your writing you have focused very much on your development as a woman, as a writer, and as a critic and political thinker. Could you describe that process?

BH: One of the issues that I continually write about is that the words we use to define political positions-whether we talk about being on the left or being feminist-do not mean that people may not have arrived at positions of resistance that could be clearly described by that language before they come to that language. In my case, I've talked a great deal about how growing up in a very patriarchal household was the setting for my development of resistance. But it was not until the organi

About the Author
Frantz Fanon (1925-61) was born in the French Caribbean island of Martinique. He studied medicine and psychiatry in France and worked in a hospital in Algeria between 1953 and 1956. He passionately identified with Algeria's armed struggle for independence and this led him to write The Wretched of the Earth (1961) which became a manifesto for the Third World. Black Skin, White Masks was first published in France in 1952.

A fantastic, indispensable book that should be read by everyone who has eyes and half a cerebellum. A great starting point for people who, like me, were interested in feminism but always felt the whole Betty Friedan liberate-the-homemaker aspect they taught us in highschool was a bit shallow, moot, and furthermore nonapplicable to males. Hooks' voice is distinctively wise, startling, discerning, and pragmatic; conceptually, it really makes you view the way society works with new eyes, even if none of the indictments really come as a surprise. Although many readers not predisposed to radical politics may have trouble swallowing all of her ideas in this era of ultra-conservatism, this book really does have something for everybody. It's obvious the reader below calling this book baseless propaganda didn't really understand it, for harmful power hegemonies are still as central to American social and political conduct as when it was first published twenty years ago.

This book changed my life twice!

It did. Once as an undergrad and then again when I walked out of my corporate america job to go back to school. I was searching for something else in my life, wanting to quit, and there it was sitting on my shelf as it had for several years. I am a white woman and a lesbian and I must be honest and say I had never really been motivated to action reading anything in feminism, until I read this book. The first chapter takes you by storm. This book is essential for any woman, well for any person. It is an introduction into "things are not always what they seem" and the beginning of viewing the world with a critical eye. Even for us liberals there are many things that we do to contribute to a racists society, knowingly or unknowingly. So I am in graduate school and I have bell hooks to thank for a lot of my motivation to be here. Read this book and read her others(if you can keep up with the number she writes!), she is amazing and inspirational, an Audre Lorde for a new generation who were not fortunate enough to be motivated by the late warrior poet. Hooks challenges us all as Lorde did when she spoke of "doing her work asking you are you doing yours?"

BALSAM FIR Resin, leaves Abies balsamea (L.) Mill Pine Family

Spire-shaped tree; to 60 ft. Flattish needles, to 11?4 in. long, in flattened sprays; stalkless. Needles rounded at base, each with 2 white lines beneath. Cones 1–4 in. long, erect; purple to green, scales mostly twice as long as broad. Bark smooth, with numerous resin pockets. Where found: Moist woods. Canada, south through New England and along mountains to Va. and W. Va.; west through n. Ohio to ne. Iowa, Mich. Uses: Canada Balsam, an oleoresin, is collected by cutting bark blisters or pockets in wood, July–Aug. Used as an antiseptic, in creams and ointments for piles, and as a root-canal sealer. Diuretic (may irritate mucous membranes). American Indians applied resin as an analgesic for burns, sores, bruises, and wounds. Leaf tea used for colds, coughs, and asthma. The oleoresin is pale yellow to greenish yellow; transparent and pleasantly scented. Its primary commercial application has been as a sealing agent for mounted microscope slides. Warning: Resin may cause dermatitis in some individuals.

Good start

I have to agree with some of the other reviewers that this book is just enough to get you in trouble. I like this book because of the (usually) clear and (mostly) accurate pictures, however, it is very obvious that the author is not an herbalist. He calls many plants "weeds," and is quick to scare one off by calling highly therapeutic plants "toxic." That said, this should be just one of many books on one's herbalist bookshelf. It is a good starting point, but please don't use this by itself.

A good place to start

Very informative book, but when I read it I get the sense that the author is governed on what he can and cannot write in the book. This is a sad fact. But overall, this book will teach you a lot, and point you in the right direction to further your research with other sources, such as internet research. It's a field guide, and just that, for use in the field. Always further your knowledge with multiple sources to get complete information. Try Youtube, lots of great videos to help. Look for other websites and learn all you can. I started by highlighting all the plants found in my area, then kept on the lookout for them in my day to day activities. Take the information on identifying a plant very seriously, and make sure you find all the signs of identification. Mistakes could make you sick, or in worst case, be deadly. But don't let that scare you away. If there are close looking plants that are harmful to you, it will be written and discussed. Lets try and rekindle this almost forgotten information of our ancestors and native forefathers. Natural medicines can be way better than our chemical based medicines, and better for you. Remember, wild plants aren't looking for your money (hint hint), lol. Happy learning!!!

Peterson Guide

I don't care what the subject is, if there is a Peterson Guide covering it, you won't go wrong buying a Peterson Guide. I am 60 and when I was a kid, I met Roger Troy Peterson and he autographed my Peterson Guide Bird of North America. No book covers it all, Peterson Guides is usually the most thorough and I use it as my primary book and the others to fill in the gaps if there are any. I have the Peterson Guide on Wild Edible plants and that one is the only one of the Peterson Guides that has a few gaps that need filling with other books. But I have 5 books on editable plants and Peterson Guide is the most complete of the 5. As for this one on Medicinal Plants and Herbs...I have it, I don't need any other, I do not see any gaps in information that need filling, it is that thorough. The cool thing about Peterson Guides are that they're all the same size and will fit in your back pocket so they're easy to carry where you will use them the most...out in the field. Good price, Good Size, easy to carry and solid information...Did I mention that you can't go wrong with a Peterson Guide?

Great for Kids AND Adults

This was a very interesting book, and I enjoyed it as much as my five-year-old son (and I learned as much as he did, too). In fact, my 11-year-old daughter was compelled to join in the reading, too. The book's Q&A, second-person format makes the reader feel involved, and the author answers questions that cover basic Hopi beliefs and culture, as well as things that children really want to know: "What games would I play?"

The Interest of Living with the Hopi

This is a great book. It has a lot of facts in it. The illustrations and the text made it seem like you were there, and you really feel how you would live and work. They had to do a lot of work, even the children. Children collected firewood, beans, plants, and other things to help with the gardens and food. In Hopi culture, the boys and the girls were equal. They had different jobs, but neither were more important than the other. The Hopi also looked for baby eagles hundreds of feet off the ground to see if they're prayers would be answered. I would recommend this book to kids and grown ups who are interested in Hopi and in our country.

excellent synposis of the hopi indians

obviously it's quite difficult to boil down an entire tribe into an accessible children's book, but the author has done a wonderful job of doing so. i purchased this book for my 2nd grade son's project on his choice of native american tribe, and was please to see it provided a fairly detailed account of what it was like to be a hopi indian while using simple language that was easy to understand.

my other son chose the cherokee indian tribe, and i was surprised to see that his book did not provide a focused view of tribal living. that book tried to cover the vast history of the cherokees (including trail of tears) but didn't offer enough details into their day-to-day living like this one.

Lisa Rodensky is the Barbara Morris Caspersen Associate Professor in the Humanities (2011-14) at Wellesley College. She is the author of The Crime in Mind: Criminal Responsibility and the Victorian Novel (2003) and the editor of Decadent Poetry from Wilde to Naidu (2006). Her essays have appeared in Victorian Literature and Culture and Essays in Criticism. She is currently at work on an analysis of the critical vocabulary of the nineteenth-century novel review.

Jungle Speed was invented approximately 3000 years ago by the Aboulou Tribe in Eastern Trisopotamia to determine the shares of food each member received after a successful hunt. The Aboulous originally used eucalyptus leaves as cards for the game. These early games usually ended in bloody fights because, unfortunately, all of the cards were identical. This simple error nearly drove the tribe to extinction. This is why Jungle Speed remained unknown by the outside world until the 20th century, when 2 clever gamethropologists, Tom and Yako, replaced the leaves with the playing cards we now use today. In Jungle Speed, you must rely on your keen sense of observation and quick reflexes. It requires a steady hand - which can be hard to maintain during the many fits of maniacal laughter. In order to win you must be the first player to get rid of all of your cards. Each turn, all of the players reveal one of their cards. If two cards are identical, those players must make a grab for the Totem. The faster player then gives their cards to their unfortunate adversary. To add to the difficulty, certain cards are almost identical, which can trick a hapless player into grabbing the Totem by mistake - a grave error. Other cards force all players to make a grab at once, change the method of play, or otherwise add to the difficulty. It's a Jungle Speed Free-for-all. Jungle Speed always starts out only as civil as a British tea party...

Jungle Speed is a great game to liven up your Friday night. Basically the game consists of a totem that sits in the middle of the table. As the players flip their cards sequentially, matches occur and trigger a mad grab for the totem.

I owned the original version of the game that included a fine quality heavy wooden totem, which in theory is a nice perk. In practice and by practice, I mean several beers into the evening, the smaller wooden totem was not as "kid" friendly (or drunk friendly) as the new version, which includes the plastic yellow totem.

The game always starts out only as civil as a British tea party, but two rounds in erupts into a shout out at the ok corral. I love this game.

My nieces and nephews also love this game. They learned the rules quickly (faster than the adults did) and they love to play. Now, its usually hard to pry them off from their game box and its simply great to see them enjoying a game that does not plug into the wall.

Fantastic party game

With the right crowd, this is one of the most fun casual games I've ever played. The premise is simple: go in a circle putting down the top card of your deck. If your card has the same pattern as someone else's card, you need to grab the totem before that player. Be warned: this will turn into an epic battle of speed, wits, and composure as everyone lunges for the totem simultaneously.

The cards have lots of very similar patterns that are not the same, which increases the difficulty, and there are special cards that modify the rules slightly.

The game can be played with large groups, but in my experience seems to play best with 5-7 players. Also, because the rules are fairly simple, it is very easy to teach to people, and I use it very successfully as a line game at conventions.

One final note: this is a newer release that uses a plastic totem instead of the original wooden totem. This personally doesn't bother me at all (and it probably leads to fewer injuries and household destruction from flying totems), but I have received some derision from friends who own the original version. So just a heads up.

A comment about the Totem

Jungle Speed is one of the most entertaining games I've ever played and there's no much I could add that hasn't been stated by other reviewers. There's just something I'd like to point out about one of the elements of the game.

Previous versions of Jungle Speed used to come with a wooden totem while the version I bought from one of the sellers in Amazon provided the game with a plastic totem. While I understand that a totem made out of a hard material, like wood, may cause accidents (and I've seen toddlers smacking each other with the totem accidentally during an intense session of jungle speed!), the current material used for making the totem is a rather soft plastic which may not last as long. The totem that came with my game has already bent slightly even though it's fairly new. I suppose it depends who is going to play the game; the adults in my household find it more comfortable to play Jungle Speed with the solid wooden totem while our kids are better off playing with the light plastic totem.
Anyhow, even though the totem is a vital element of the game, it could easily be replaced by another household object.

The one I bought anyway. And if you've written a book using Microsoft Word 2007+, you can export to a PDF document anyway, that can be sent to a self publishing company or a printer. No point in using this stuff anymore.

Pretty good

Although I am usually not a big fan of the Visual Quick Start series I really like this one. Mr. Alspach certainly knows what he is writing about. Written in a clear, pleasant way without the unnecessary stupid jokes you encounter far too much in computer books these days. Great coverage of all the basic and intermediate Pagemaker stuff. Good as a study book and very good as a reference book. If you are a beginning or intermediate Pagemaker user needing a book to support you when you are using Pagemaker, buy this one.
If you buy this one and Pagemaker 7: Classroom in a book, you have the perfect combination to learn how to use Pagemaker.

I needed to teach myself Pagemaker for projects at work. I had done design in other programs, i.e. MS Publisher, but not Pagemaker. Even though I was unable to learn about the Pagemaker program before I needed to know what I was doing for an official project, the book was able to help me get it done.

Grade 7 Up—In a burst of panic about a nuclear attack, nine-year-old Eli, his sisters, and his parents move into an underground bunker built by Eli's billionaire father. It's an enormous complex, with rooms similar to those in the family's Seattle mansion. Only his grandmother and twin brother don't make it in. The first six years of the planned 15 have been fairly routine, but now some food has spoiled, and certain things just don't seem right, or even possible. Eli is starting to have doubts about his father's motives, explanations, and sanity. Readers might find the first third of the novel to be slow as a lot of time is spent developing Eli's character as a spoiled, self-centered child. There is considerable foreshadowing, and astute readers will likely figure out the ending. As the years pass, Eli is full of teen angst and anger that develops into a realization of what he must do in order to help his family survive. The novel becomes full of tension and suspense and turns into a true edge-of-the-seat thriller. Great Premise, Less Than Great Execution

I thought the premise for this book was FANTASTIC--such a creepy, fascinating idea for a story! Sadly, the book itself didn't make anywhere near as big an impression on me as the idea of it did. I felt like things moved along a little too quickly to feel realistic, and the characters were inconsistent and...just not quite believable. Several plot points were sloppy and didn't really make sense. And it seemed like every conflict or hurdle was overcome way too easily. It had the potential to be super dark, super suspenseful, utterly riveting, but in the end it just kind of falls flat. Maybe if it was twice as long and everything was fleshed out much more than it is?

Still an entertaining read, just...disappointing, because it could have been SO much better. :(

Eerie Secrets

I absolutely was amazed by this book. Being a librarian that's obsessed with books, I couldn't help picking this book up in the store. The cover alone got me hooked. It was well paced and packed with amazing things. The story revolving around Eli. His family is dysfunctional, living in a compound under the ground after the world went kaboom.

When the story starts out he's pretty self absorbed, but as the plot starts to thicken he isn't so absorbed and starts to wonder about a few things that are going on. One of which is their food supply is starting to run low. His mother is pregnant, his sister isn't as much of a pain as he thinks, and his father is a complete... nutcase?!

This story was so intriguing that I found myself reading till all hours of the night. I loved it! It was an exceptional story about possibilities that sometimes we ignore. I hope to add this to our library collection.

I can't wait till her next book comes out... The Gardener...

Quick read, amazing book.

The Compound is a short book by my standards, only 272 pages, but it packs a whole lot of punch. I love post apocalyptic fiction, stories of survival, for some reason they give me hope that I myself could endure such an event.

This is a story of a family, nine year old Eli , his two sisters and his parents barely make it into the familys compound before a nuclear war decimates the earth. Elis twin brother and grandmother are left outside due to circumstances and the severing of those ties is devestating. Elis father has thought of everything, the compound is fully stocked, and has all the comforts of home, but things go wrong one after the other and the family has to take drastic measures to ensure their survival (one of which is just shocking!) Soon Eli's hunches about their situation are confirmed and the book quickly shifts into overdrive.

This is young adult fiction that is inspired by the twilight zone, and even has some horror movie undertones, its a fast read that is well thought out and intriguing even to adult readers.
