About the Author

Michel Bruneau, P.E., P.Eng., is Professor in the Department of Civil, Structural, and Environmental Engineering at the State University of New York at Buffalo, and an ASCE Fellow. He is a member of various AISC and CSA committees developing seismic design specifications for bridges and buildings. Dr. Bruneau has conducted extensive research on the evaluation and retrofit of existing steel structures subjected to large destructive forces. He has authored more than 400 technical publications and has received many awards for his work.

Chia-Ming Uang, Ph.D., is Professor in the Department of Structural Engineering at the University of California, San Diego. A member of the AISC’s Committee on Specification and Committee on Research, he received the AISC Special Achievement Award in 2007. Dr. Uang has authored numerous articles on seismic behavior and design of steel structures.

Rafael Sabelli, S.E., is a Principal and Director of Seismic Design at Walter P. Moore and Associates, Inc., and was President of the Structural Engineers Association of California from 2009 to 2010. He is a member of the AISC Task Committee on the Seismic Provisions for Structural Steel Buildings and the ASCE 7 Seismic Subcommittee. Mr. Sabelli is the coauthor of AISC Design Guide 20: Steel Plate Shear Walls as well as of numerous research papers on conventional and buckling-restrained braced frames.

Accessible and practical

This text was extremely useful in a seismic design course I took. By blending a review of current research efforts with clear design procedures, Prof Bruneau and his co-authors provide an engineering textbook different than many others. It's more than a how-to; it's more of a here's-why.
The book offers aspiring and practicing engineers a thorough explanation of different frame options and understanding of their behavior. It then demonstrates how best to design each particular type of frame including design examples. At the same time, the authors make clear that there is still research to be done to better understand the behavior of steel structures under earthquake loads.
I suspect this is one of those textbooks that I will reference for years to come.

A must have for all engineers, researchers, and students interested in developing solid background in plastic design and seismic design of steel structures. Also a great reference book. Emphasis on behavior and understanding, which is they key to a great career in structural engineering.

About the Author
William R. Miller is Professor of Psychology and Psychiatry at the University of New Mexico, and Director of the Research Division of UNM's Center on Alcoholism, Substance Abuse, and Addictions. He has published 17 books and more than 100 articles and chapters, focusing primarily on the treatment of alcohol problems and addictive behaviors. He has developed and evaluated a variety of innovative clinical strategies and, along with G. Alan Marlatt, designed a comprehensive set of structured clinical interviews for pre-treatment and follow-up assessment of alcohol problems. He has held numerous research grants, founded a private practice, served as a consultant to many organizations, and currently holds a 5-year Senior Career Research Scientist Award from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism.

Stephen Rollnick, PhD, is Honorary Distinguished Professor at the Cochrane Institute of Primary Care and Public Health at Cardiff University, United Kingdom. A clinical psychologist with many years of experience and a codeveloper of MI, he provides consultancy and training on the subjects of motivation, change, and MI. His research and guidelines for good practice have been widely published, and his work on implementation continues, with a current focus on children with HIV/AIDS in Africa, pregnant teens in deprived communities, and MI for schoolteachers and sports coaches.

Although they emphasize substance abuse, the authors' system applies to almost every problem. It can cut your stress as it helps you become more artful and effective in helping clients actualize thier motivations toward success. Very clearly written, systematic, and enjoyable to read. Special populations are covered. Research is increasingly supporting this approach.

Easy and practicle guide to changing behavior

I have worked with criminal offenders for the last 10 years and have found this approach outlined in the book extremely useful. The book is easy to read and follow. I have used the information with Batterers, sex offenders and substance abusers. The only offenders I have found it not appropriate for are "diagnosed" psychopaths.

Good practice workbook

Good book but I wish it had more math problems. My daughter got all the math problems correct in this prep book but she just took the actual test today and the math turned out to be more difficult than this books questions made them out to be. The English section was very good though. Challenging vocabulary and analogies.

So far, which is like 30 pages, they give decent advise. I think a course with a liver person would be much better though. But since those are thousands and this is 20, I guess this works for now. Not enough practice questions though. you'll want to get a supplementary question book.

Rainbow Carrots and Chard

Taste the rainbow: Carrots come in an array of beautiful colors. For this striking side dish, we blanched a variety of colors just until tender and bright, then tossed them with a lemon vinaigrette and the color-coordinated stems of rainbow chard.

SERVES 4

1 pound small carrots, trimmed and scrubbed
Coarse salt and freshly ground pepper
1 bunch rainbow Swiss chard, stems trimmed (leaves reserved for another use)
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice, and ½ lemon, thinly sliced into rounds
1 teaspoon sugar
¼ cup extra-virgin olive oil
Fresh mint leaves, for serving

1. Prepare a large ice-water bath. Cook carrots in a pot of generously salted boiling water until crisp-tender, about 7 minutes. Transfer to ice bath until cool, then remove with a spider and pat dry.

2. Cook chard stems in boiling water until crisp-tender, about 4 minutes. Transfer to ice bath, drain, and pat dry.

3. Whisk together lemon juice, and sugar in a small bowl; season with salt and pepper. Add oil in a slow, steady stream, whisking until combined.

4. Combine carrots, chard, and lemon rounds in a large bowl. Toss with some dressing, then transfer to a platter. Top with mint and serve.

I was really looking forward to this cookbook. I bought it prerepublish date and I am very disappointed in how many of the recipes have meat in them. I do not recommend this book to vegetarians. A good lesson to wait for actual reader reviews.

This is book three in The Mountain Prince series. The last of three sisters to wed; now it's Princess Dahlia's turn. She will marry sexy mountain prince, Lucas.

Dahlia is not happy about marrying Prince Lucas. Dahlia believes in true love and always hoped she would marry a man that she was in love with. Of course her husband would love her just as much. Now because her father arranged a marriage for her in exchange for a very large dowry, her hopes and dreams of true love are crushed.

Dutifully, Dahlia will go through with the marriage to help save her father's kingdom. Just like her sisters before her have done. However, Dahlia's sister's marriages turned out to be the real deal...happily ever afters. Dahlia hoped to attain the same happiness in her upcoming marriage; sadly she didn't believe she would have their same luck.

Prince Lucas was not thrilled to be getting married. It was not that he hated the idea of marriage. He just didn't believe a woman would love him for himself. Only for his crown and vast wealth. His concern was justified because he would be king. But Lucas loved and respected his father dearly. He would do anything the king asked of him. Lucas's father has been ill for a long time and sadly, he would not live much longer. The king's wish was to see Lucas marry. So Lucas would make sure his father got his wish. Lucas would marry the princess his father chose for him. But Lucas wanted to meet her before the wedding. Under false pretenses, he would pretend to be someone else with the hope that she would be who he hoped, an honest, caring woman who could love for reasons that had nothing to do with status or wealth.

Of course, Prince Lucas pretty quickly discovered that he regretted his deception. Princess Dahlia was a delightful surprise. She was beautiful, kind and caring and he quickly fell for her. Lucas was worried about her reaction to his deception. What would she say or do when the truth is revealed?

I won't say more because this story is short and you should experience Lucas and Dahlia's romance by reading it for yourselves. I absolutely adored this story. I loved Lucas and Dahlia together. We also get visited from Dahlia's sisters and their princes as well as her father.

As always I look forward to another Frankie Love mountain man romance. They are super short, super sexy and erotic and totally sugary sweet.

This is a story about princess Dahlia who finds out her father arranged marriages for her and her 2 sisters to save their broke island country. Dahlia is the youngest at 21 and is the last one to get married but like the other 2 sisters Princess Dahlia and Prince Lucas' meeting was not quite conventional. He deceives her when he picks her up from the airport posing as his bodyguard Thomas to see what she is really like. On there way back to the castle the car gets stuck because of a snowstorm and then they are stranded until help can arrive. They learn a lot about each other however Lucas' secret has to come out sooner or later but what happens when it does. You need to read it to find out

This story is truly a modern fairy tale. It's filled with princesses and princes and all that goes with it. You can't help but fall in love with the characters and the love that grows between them. This is truly a story to read and enjoy and maybe read again. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a true fairy tale filled with love and promises.

Great book with the right expectations

Disclaimer: I am a real reviewer who actually purchased and read the book. I felt compelled to write my first review because I was annoyed in two ways: first, the clearly fake reviewers, second, the readers who came in with ridiculous expectations about the contents of the book.

Second disclaimer: I am NOT a Tim worshiper. The 4-Hour Workweek is a sometimes unethical pipe dream that a couple people writers imitating Tim have made money on. For most of us, it contains a couple tricks to be more efficient at our 9-5. The 4-Hour Body is a relatively interesting and fun book on fitness and diet experimentation. I learned a few tips and tricks from it and really enjoyed reading about his experiences. I have read most of Tim's blog and consider it a sometimes better alternative to "Life Hacker".

Those two disclaimers being said, this is a GREAT book if you come in with the right expectations. If you're looking for 600+ pages solely devoted to grocery shopping, prep, recipes, cooking and eating, you will not find it here. You'll find about 200-250 pages dedicated solely to such, and 200 more at least somewhat related--consisting of wilderness cooking and survival, great restaurants, 140 character recipes, and basic tools you need in the kitchen. At a macro level, the most useful cooking lessons are Tim's notes on equipment to have in your kitchen, his 10 easy recipes (most of which are really interesting/easy shortcuts), and the charts on spices that go with different countries. At a micro level, I picked up a few random tidbits from the 1/2-pagers on how to quickly defrost a steak, how to make the perfect cup of coffee, etc. The most important part of this section is that Tim teaches you HOW to cook, not just how to follow a recipe. The best part about his methodology is that he removes all roadblocks from the reader--the excessively expensive equipment, the hard to find ingredients, and the difficult cooking techniques are all put nicely out of mind with shortcuts and detailed pictures.

The rest of the book, in my opinion, is actually more interesting. The first section is about a hundred pages are worth the price of admission alone. It details a method to learn anything efficiently--Tim is merely using cooking as a MEDIUM to teach this method. I've started applying this first section to learning a number of skills already. As the middle sections are the ones devoted to cooking and wilderness survival that I detailed above, the appendix is related to random skills and interesting "life hacks" that you can learn quickly. Yes, these feel like last-minute additions but if one thing is clear Tim actually cares about his readers, why not throw in these interesting pages--they do not detract from the focus as they are part of the appendix.

If I can say one thing--buy this book. For me, I can see myself going back to it for years anytime I'd like to learn a new skill (be it with cooking or otherwise). If you want to learn HOW to cook taught in an unpretentious tone with easy to follow pictures, you'll find it here. If you're interested in shortcuts to learning complex skills, you'll find it here. If you just want to pick up a few cooking shortcuts, you will most definitely be delighted with this book. And lastly, if you are a fan of Tim and his other works, absolutely buy this book.

Lastly, a note on format, BUY THE HARDCOVER. I bought the Kindle as well since it was on sale for just $4.99 on Amazon and it does not even come close to comparing to the hardcover version. This book is meant to have pages cut out and marked up, its detailed color pictures to be seen, etc.

Zen and the Art of Just About Everything

Tim Ferriss tells you right off that this isn't a book about cooking, just like Zen And The Art Of Motorcycle Maintenance isn't about Zen or changing oil. He'll teach you how to handle a knife and make a few interesting dishes, but mostly he takes you on a long, strange, self-indulgent, and sometimes useful trip.

What I enjoyed:

-- Ferriss's storytelling. He has a nice way with words: "Mangalitsa acorn-finished woolly boar tasted just like acorns. I was chewing on fall, clear as crystal, in a sliver of cured ham."

-- His emphasis on the slow food movement and local, organic farming. (But strangely, his "Clean 15" foods include sweet corn, which is mostly genetically modified.)

-- His language hacking tips, which are gold. I've always wanted to master several languages and found his methodology solid and logical.

-- The 140-character Twitter recipes from almost every country in the world: fun, simple, and intriguing.

What I didn't like:

-- Ferriss's tangential teaching style. At one point he goes from braising to English's 100 most common written words to kickboxing to chess to tango spins in order to emphasize the importance of selection and sequencing. It didn't work for me, because I often lost track of the original concept.

-- His foray in into survival and hunting skills, just so you can make your own venison burger. (If you want some cricket protein bars, however, you'll need to mail order the crickets.) This section could have been a separate book and might have been fascinating as a metaphor/methodology for learning entrepreneurial skills.

-- His unrealistic (for the busy person) science experiments, such as making arugula spaghetti using a syringe and flexible tubing just to avoid that dreaded white flour. (Though some of his cocktails in the same section sound delicious.)

If I were to sum up this book in one word, it would be "manic": excessively enthusiastic and somewhat disorganized. Ferriss is obviously a curious and driven guy. I came away feeling he gets satisfaction from the ability to tackle and master anything, but not joy.

Interesting book but extremely random and reads more like a magazine

I am a fan of Tim Ferris but I have to say that this book over promises and under delivers. Ferris is the master of marketing and hype and even teaches you his techniques on his blog so it is very easy to pick out what he did. Here are some of my thoughts on the book.

- The book claims it's not a book about cooking yet 80% of the content is food related. He talks a lot about meta-learning but doesn't really dive into learning types and just gives generic learning tips.
- The book reads almost like a magazine and jumps all over the place as you progress through.
- Random mens magazine style tips (how shoot a jumpshot??, Knifes, guns, camping etc) I feel like I'm reading a GQ magazine.
- Really big book, the formatting is good but some of the pictures looked very amateur.
- You can tell he didn't write a lot of content of the book. Ferris is the master of outsourcing yet he makes it seems like he is the jack of all trades.
- Tons of pages of recipes (I thought this wasn't a cookbook?)

Overall I would say that it is a very entertaining book but I didn't find it more educational than any magazine you can pickup off the newsstands.

A gorgeous book for cat lovers

There are, in my opinion, two kinds of cat books. There are the kind for people who want to breed and show them, and books for people who just love these little creatures and want to know how best to care for them. This beautifully photographed book covers breeds from the familiar (the Shorthair house cat) to the exotic (Peterbald or Donskoy, anyone?) There is an emphasis on health and care, with a lot of thought to the animals' personality. There are sections on feeding, socializing your cat, inherited disorders, training your cat. Everything lovers of cats need to keep their babies healthy and happy. I love this book.

This book is very much loved by my cat crazy daughter. She is almost 7, but reads 3-4th grade level, so she reads out loud from it all the time (hoping I'd get her a cat). Plenty of pictures and writings are good.

Complete Cat Breed Book

I was delightfully surprised at all the information contained in this book. Not only are the various breeds shown in lovely colored pictures, there is valuable information as to the health and idiosyncrasies of each breed. There is a section for American shorthairs and longhair non pedigree cats too. There is information on how to care for your cat when well or sick. I really like this book very much. I would recommend it for anyone who wants to know more about cats and how to take care of cats.

About the Author
John Roberts is widely recognized for his contributions to warship literature. He was editor of Warship for six years and is the coauthor of the standard works on British battleships and cruisers of the Second World War period. His superb warship plans led one authority to describe him as “the best draughtsman in the UK.” His two previous volumes for Conway, on the Dreadnought and Intrepid, were widely acclaimed.

Dreadnought Anatomy first class

HMS Dreadnought was a revolutionary new type of battleship and set the definition for all following battleships in the 20th century. This book sets the standard as THE reference for the ship and is a must-have for anyone with an interest in battleships in general, right through to the serious builder who wants to scratch-build a museum-standard model.

The book is divided into several key sections - photographs, drawings, technical details. The photos and drawings are excellent and the drawings show not just the broad-picture items but even small fittings such as portholes, loading hatches, and the various types of water-tight doors in use at the time, as well as where the coal chutes were located on the upper decks - all things that many plans fail to show. All drawings are to scale so can be easily enlarged for modeling purposes.

The ship is shown at several stages in her career, not just "as completed", and all major modifications are listed in date order so an experienced modeler should be able to follow the drawings and build the ship at any stage.

Even a non-modeler will enjoy this book. It is not especially cheap but then, quality never is. I wish I'd bought it years ago.

This series is one of the best . Each book covers one ship in great detail. This one covers the vessel that started it all HMS Dreadnought. Sadly, if USS South Carolina or her sister had been faster out of the building yards, we might not call 20th century ships of the line Dreadnoughts. This book covers every detail there is about this amazing ship. I recommend this series as one of the best detail books out there.

A must have for any battleship fan

I purchased this book for two reasons. First, I make models of ships. This book is an invaluable reference manual. The detail will actually go into the internal layout of the ship. Crew cabins and sleeping area will show up on the details. The very excellent plans of the ship are worth $30 to $40 dollars at any shop that sells ship plans. That is worth the price of the book.

Conversely, I was a little surprised at the write up of the operation of the ship. Dreadnought had no economical cruise speed. So, unlike other ships of her time period, like the USS Michigan, she was never economical to operate. Dreadnough had no design flaws. Thus, she was the working prototype for all British Great War ships. In design she was perfect.

I was very happy with the pictures of the ship. I had never seen most of the pictures before. The level of detail in these pictures gives a good picture of the set up of the ship.

This book is not a operational history. That is somewhat a regret. However, people wanting an operational history of the ship should read Robert Massey's excellent "Castles of Steel".

This book is total truth in advertising, it is a study of the ship. It is a total look at the Dreadnought. The book is vital for model builders and is a great reference for any student of history.
