The Elements of Eloquence: How to Turn the Perfect English Phrase, by Mark Forsyth

'An informative but highly entertaining journey through the figures of rhetoric ...Mark Forsyth wears his considerable knowledge lightly. He also writes beautifully.' David Marsh, Guardian In an age unhealthily obsessed with substance, this is a book on the importance of pure style, from the bestselling author of The Etymologicon and The Horologicon. From classic poetry to pop lyrics and from the King James Bible to advertising slogans, Mark Forsyth explains the secrets that make a phrase - such as 'Tiger, Tiger, burning bright', or 'To be or not to be' - memorable. In his inimitably entertaining and witty style he takes apart famous lines and shows how you too can write like Shakespeare or Oscar Wilde. Whether you're aiming for literary immortality or just an unforgettable one-liner, The Elements of Eloquence proves that you don't need to have anything to say - you simply need to say it well. 'Sparkling ...the book offers many pleasures ...I laughed out loud' Charles Moore, Daily Telegraph

Taking the mystery out of English
By philip
Ever get your hypotaxis mixed up with your peritaxis? Muddled over a merism? Puzzled by praise for prolepsis after you were taught never to start a sentence with a pronoun? If so, Mark Forsyth’s the language anatomist for you.
Forsyth shows that great writing doesn’t necessarily require genius, but understanding of technique and certain tricks, as taught in the figures of rhetoric, from the simple (and often overused) alliteration to zeugma. Citing passages from writers such as Shakespeare, John Donne, Coleridge, to Oscar Wilde and Dashiell Hammett to pop writers like Lennon and McCartney, Forsyth sheds clarity on memorable English. The endurance of Shakespeare and a host of other classical writers is due, Forsyth says, to their practice of technique rather than bolts thrown by a muse.
Though one hates to quibble with an expert, I have a few, including the too-frequent use of “very”, even doubling the adverb at times and tripling it once: “very, very odd indeed”. “Very, very, very technically”. “Very precisely” The last one’s a true pleonasm, isn’t it? Precise is precise: how can something be very precise?
My biggest small quibble is his repeated use of the word “chap”, British English for man or boy. “A chap called George Puttenham … ”. “If they make a chap write as well as Shakespeare …” “Pythagoras was a clever chap…”. “Jesus was more of an asyndeton chap …”And this teeth-grinding bit of excess: “… describing the differences between chaps and chapesses.” Forsyth is an erudite chap but an editor could have taken the pencil to this show of over-cleverness.
“Elements of Eloquence” is a good read by someone who knows literature and the nuts and bolts of language, particularly rhetorical technique. It’s likely to spur further reading.

Entertaining review of a not so dry subject after all
By Phipedro
This is Forsyth's third book - and it seems to be back to the level of his first. It is beautifully pitched, using examples of the rhetorical devices being discussed - both from past writers and buried in Forsyth's own text - as illustrations. And it's funny. And he does still have that annoying ability to link his chapters so that you just have to read the next one...

Rhetorically Speaking, "What's not to love?"
By S. Jones
The Elements of Eloquence by Mark Forsyth
Rhetoric is the art of persuasion. While this book contains material that is educational, it is presented in an entertaining style that is witty and entertaining.

This book is divided into the following 39 chapters that each describe and give examples of figures of rhetoric.
1 Alliteration: the rhetorical device of repeating the sound of the first consonant in a series of multiple words.
2 Polyptoton: the use of one word as different parts of speech or in different grammatical forms.
3 Antithesis: the use of two opposites for contrasting effect.
4 Merism: where a single thing is referred to by an enumeration of several of its parts, or a list of several synonyms for the same thing.
5 Blazon: "extended merism, the dismemberment of the loved one".
6 Synaesthesia: a device where one sense is described in terms of another.
7 Aposiopesis: a figure of speech wherein a sentence is deliberately broken off and left unfinished, the ending to be supplied by the imagination, giving an impression of unwillingness or inability to continue.
8 Hyperbaton: a figure of speech which describes an alteration of the logical order of the words in a sentence.
9 Anadiplosis: repetition of the last word of a preceding clause.
10 Periodic Sentences: are not complete grammatically before the final clause or phrase.
11 Hypotaxis and Parataxis: hypotaxis is a complex style of writing involving the use of a large number of subordinate clauses, while parataxis is the style of writing with short simple sentences.
12 Diacope: the close repetition of a word or phrase, separated by a word or words.
13 Rhetorical Questions: a device where a question is stated to make a point, without requiring any answer because it is intended to be obvious.
14 Hendiadys: a device used for emphasis, where an adjective-noun form is swapped for noun-and-noun.
15 Epistrophe: a device using the repetition of the same word or words at the end of successive phrases, clauses or sentences for emphasis.
16 Tricolon: a sentence is composed of three equal parts. Forsyth points to the national motto of France (Liberté, égalité, fraternité) as one of his many examples of the impact of this device.
17 Epizeuxis: the repetition of a word or phrase in immediate succession, for emphasis.
18 Syllepsis: a single word is used with two other parts of a sentence but must be understood differently in relation to each.
19 Isocolon: Forsyth's definition seems to state that a sentence is composed by two parts equivalent in structure, length and rhythm. Other sources suggest two or more parts, and relate tricolon which is mentioned in the earlier chapter.
20 Enallage: a "deliberate grammatical mistake".
21 Versification: the effect of a few different verse forms used, including examples of iambic pentameter.
22 Zeugma: a series of clauses which use the same verb.
23 Paradox: a statement that is logically false or impossible for emphasis or contrast.
24 Chiasmus: a symmetrical repetition of structure or wording.
25 Assonance: the repetition of a vowel sound.
26 The Fourteenth Rule: the rhetorical device of providing an unnecessarily specific number for something for emphasis.
27 Catachresis: a grammatically wrong use of words as a means of creative expression.
28 Litotes: emphasizes a point by denying the opposite.
29 Metonymy and Synecdoche: where something connected to the thing described, or a part of it, is used in place of the thing itself.
30 Transferred Epithets: where an adjective is applied to the wrong noun, for effect.
31 Pleonasm: the use of superfluous and unnecessary words in a sentence for emphasis.
32 Epanalepsis: repetition of a word or phrase at the beginning and end of a sentence or clause to emphasize circularity.
33 Personification: a description which imputes human actions or characteristics to an inanimate or non-human thing.
34 Hyperbole: the rhetorical device of exaggeration.
35 Adynaton: a hyperbole so extreme as to be a complete impossibility.
36 Prolepsis: the use of a pronoun at the start of a sentence, which reverses the normal order.
37 Congeries: a bewildering list of adjectives or nouns.
38 Scesis Onomaton: sentences without a main verb.
39 Anaphora: starting each sentence with the same word.

Great Read (for a school text book)
By Mark A. Wachdorf
I guess the title says it all 'Great Read (for a school text book)'

This was a book that was required for a class I took. I read it from cover to cover. I have to say - each chapter was well written and interesting. Each chapter addressed a different natural resource (for example air, freshwater, etc) including many I never considered (like top soil).

There is a newer edition out there. I contacted the publisher about an update. In hindsite I cannot believe that I, a simple minded student, would ask a publisher for an update! I guess that's just a testament to how interesting the book was, I was thinking perhaps maybe a pdf containing the 2 new chapters. The response I got was NO!

Now that the stink eye has been focused on the publisher, there was one point in the book that was a bit annoying. I did not like how the text kept refering to a picture or figure or graphic that almost always was on the next or the previous page turn. I guess that's the challange of the publisher and will always be a problem with the published medium.

OK ... so maybe I dont particularly care for the publishers, but it wont stop me from buying another book from them and this is still a great book.

Welcome to 1-2-3 Magic

Parenting is one of the most important jobs in the world, and it can also be one of life's most enjoyable experiences. Small children are engaging, affectionate, entertaining, curious, full of life, and fun to be around. For many adults, parenting provides profound and unique benefits unequaled by any other area of life.

Yet being a mom or a dad can also be unbelievably frustrating. Repeat the Twinkie scene more than a thousand times and you have guaranteed misery. In extreme but all-too-common situations, that misery can become the source of emotional and physical abuse. That's no way for anyone-child or adult-to live.

Children don't come with a How-To-Raise-Me training manual. That's why there is a program like 1-2-3 Magic. The 1-2-3 program is currently being used all over the world by millions of parents (including single and divorced), teachers, grandparents, day care centers, babysitters, summer camp counselors, hospital staff, and other child caretakers, all of whom are working toward the goal of raising happy, healthy children.

The 1-2-3 program is also being taught and recommended by thousands of mental health professionals and pediatricians. At parent-teacher conferences, teachers recommend 1-2-3 Magic to the parents of their students (and sometimes parents recommend 1-2-3 Magic for Teachers to the teachers!).

Why all the enthusiasm? As one parent put it, "1-2-3 Magic was easy to learn and it gave me results. I went back to enjoying my kids and being the kind of mother I knew I could be." More than twenty-five years after the launch of the program, we're hearing from parents today who say, "My kids were great kids and now they're nice adults. We enjoy being with them."

1-2-3 Magic helps children grow up to be self-disciplined adults who are competent, happy, and able to get along with others. In other words, it helps produce emotionally intelligent people-people who can manage their own feelings as well as understand and respond to the emotions of others.

The methods described in this book are easy to master and you can start the program right away. Depending on whether you use the book, the audio CD, or the two DVDs, the technique takes about three to four hours to learn. Anyone can use 1-2-3 Magic-all it takes is determination and commitment!

How to Get Started

When you finish learning the 1-2-3 Magic program it is a good idea to start practicing it immediately. Talk with your spouse or partner, if both of you are living at home, and then get going right away. If you are a single parent, take a deep breath and then explain the drill to your children. Do the same thing if you're a grandparent. If you don't start right away, you may never get around to it.

After learning 1-2-3 Magic, you will know exactly what to do, what not to do, what to say, and what not to say in just about every one of the common, everyday problem situations you run into with your kids. Because 1-2-3 Magic is based on only a few basic but critical principles, you will not only be able to remember what to do, you will be able to do it when you are anxious, agitated, or otherwise upset (which for many of us parents is every day!). You will also be able to be a kind but effective parent when you are busy, in a hurry, or otherwise preoccupied.

What to Expect When You Begin the 1-2-3 Program

When you start 1-2-3 Magic, your relationship with your children will change quickly. But there is good news and bad news. The good news is that initially about half of all kids will fall into the "immediate cooperator" category. You start the program and they cooperate right away-sometimes "just like magic." What do you do? Just relax and enjoy your good fortune!

The bad news is that the other half of the kids will fall into the "immediate tester" category. These children will get worse first. They will challenge you to see if you really mean business with your new parenting ideas. If you stick to your guns, however-no arguing, yelling, or hitting-you will get the vast majority of these little testers shaped up fairly well in about a week to ten days. Then what do you do? You start enjoying your children again.

Believe it or not, you may soon have a much more peaceful home and more enjoyable kids. You will go back to liking and respecting yourself as a parent-and it can all happen in the foreseeable future!

Before we get into the details of the 1-2-3 program and Parenting Job 1, controlling obnoxious behavior, we should identify some very important concepts that are the fundamental to understanding how 1-2-3 Magic works:

1.The most effective orientation to-or philosophy of-parenting (chapter 1).

2.The three basic parenting jobs (chapter 2).

3.The dangerous assumption parents, teachers, and other caretakers often make about young children (chapter 3).

4.The two biggest discipline mistakes made by adults (chapter 4).

It's working for us and our almost 3 year old!
By Shawnamama
So far so good! Our son is 2.5 years old and testing us at every turn. He's sweet and intelligent but also very high energy and exerting his independence. I personally got very frustrated with him at times and needed to find a way to effectively handle those moments. Just like with Dog training, it's about training the parent. This book has given my husband and I a better understanding of our son and a strategy for handling unwanted behavior. Just having an approach/plan of action has calmed us all. We also liked how the book points out that children are NOT small adults. We need to stop expecting them to be mature and reasonable. I like that there isn't a lot of conversation- just calm counting and sending him to time out. The only time I have had trouble is when I REALLY can't deal with him- as in alone with him and my infant and I'm bathing her. Obviously I can't walk away from her to send him to his room. Times like that, I just have to predict the scenario and put him in a place where he can't get into trouble. We highly recommend this book if you need a method of dealing with your little one/s that keeps everyone calm and it works to boot!

By R.V.
This is a well written book. Clear instructions as well as great examples. My eight year old son is doing very well with this new method of discipline/instruction. The one thing we do differently is the book suggests that after the three count and take 8 minutes in his room, for the child to come back and nothing is mentioned about previous behaviour. We changed that into coming over for a hug and an apology and then we move on. I have seen a huge difference in his heart attitude and he also is learning to control himself and to stop his behaviour before getting to a three count. Obviously, we still have issues (he's not perfect), but I can see a noticeable change in him as a young man. The other change is me. I am not yelling, I am not getting upset, no anger in me anymore. I know that I can just shrug my shoulders inside and know I can react calmly and count and it resolves itself gently/quietly. I feel for the first time I have control again (what I mean is I have been anxious about this child in public or with company because I just never knew how to control him when he was completely disrespectful or disobedient, he never cared how he looked in public throwing a tantrum, etc.), now I feel safe again and he feels safe, too. I hope that makes sense. Thank you for this book.

Amazon.com Review
Vince Luca, 17, has a problem. His wealthy family runs the, uh, vending machine business in New York, and Vince is determined not to be part of it. Especially after a hot date is ruined when he finds that his older brother Tommy has conducted some business with Jimmy the Rat and hidden the messy and temporarily unconscious body in the trunk of Vince's car. His dad, the King of the Mob, is reasonable, sensible, lots of fun, gives great presents to his kids--and his name strikes the hearts of other mobsters to stone.

Although Vince keeps a low profile at school, his family connection brings him unwanted advantages, like the birthday Porsche that gets him arrested on stolen vehicle charges, or the football game in which he makes touchdown after touchdown because word has gotten around and nobody is willing to tackle him. Even private conversations at home have to be carried on in the basement because the FBI has bugged the house and an agent is always listening. Vince's life is inextricably tangled up with the family business, no matter how hard he tries to stay out of it. How can he show them he's serious? Then he meets Kendra, and when she innocently reveals that her father's an FBI agent--that FBI agent--it's a match made in heaven. He thinks.

Gordon Korman, author of (No More Dead Dogs) and over 30 other witty YA novels, is at his best in this Sopranos-style spoof about a teen's home life with the Mob. (Ages 12 and older) --Patty Campbell

From Publishers Weekly
The Sopranos (minus the vulgarity and violence) meets Leave It to Beaver (minus the "aw-shucks" tone and dated sensibility) in Korman's (No More Dead Dogs) brassy, comical caper. With its razor-sharp dialogue and bullet-fast pace, this tale could fly on either the small or big screen, yet it makes a page-turner of a novel. Korman shapes a believable and likable crew-despite the less than reputable profession of some. Many of the novel's conflicts revolve around the fact that the affable narrator, 17-year-old Vince Luca, refuses to become involved in the family "vending machine business." But of course, since his father is the Mob boss, and his older brother serves as their father's loser lackey, Vince cannot avoid being tainted (e.g., he lands in jail "because my sixteenth-birthday present [a Porsche] turns out to be hot"). Mom turns a deaf ear to the shady goings-on, cooking up a steady storm in the kitchen and willing "to serve a sit-down dinner for fifteen guys at four in the morning with ten minutes advance notice." Things heat up when Vince begins dating-and eventually falls in love with-the daughter of the FBI agent determined to bring down Vince's father. The boy also gets sucked into the maelstrom when he loans money to one of his father's underlings for whom he feels sorry. Funny and unexpectedly affecting, this will grab-and hold onto-even the most reluctant of readers. Ages 12-up.

From School Library Journal
Grade 7-9-Actor Max Casella effectively becomes Vince Luca, son of the leading New York mob boss, reading Gordon Korman's novel (Hyperion, 2002) which presents difficult situations and choices in a very humorous way. Despite his resolve to be a "normal" teenager and to stay out of his father's criminal activities, Vince finds himself seemingly drawn as a loan shark on a deal and must find a way to get out. Complicating the situation is the fact that he has started dating the daughter of the FBI agent investigating his father's activities. Casella's nasal, slight New York accent is perfect for this selection and draws listeners into the story told in first person. Reading at a fast clip, there is never a dull moment. Casella uses pauses and emphasis to accentuate the teenage slang. Although Vince's emotions are presented in a somewhat exaggerated manner, younger teens will enjoy the excitement and humor of the story. Casella does whatever is necessary-shouting, breaking into song, etc.-to make the narration very realistic. A great choice to motivate adolescent boys.

Great.

Gordan Korman seemed to have leaped the extra mile in Son of the Mob, I loved everything about, except the ending. Vince Luca 17, a highschool student but also a Mob prince. He recieves what every kid wants a hefty allowance, a porsche for his birthday, and basically anything he wants. Even though the stuff he gets sometimes isn't bought, example the porsche. Good ol' Dad working for the vending machine buisness, Vince's way of putting the Mafia in code, Honest Abe Luca, Vince's father, keeps Vince protected and wealthy. His family consists of many uncles , which are under his father in the uh...buisness. When Vince gets a second date, his first was ruined by a Rat and a brother, Vince and Kendra seem to be the perfect couple except thier fathers are opposites, Kendra's dad works for the FBI, that happens to be the one who is trying to put Anthony Luca into the slammer. The book sends you in twists and turns, almost like a Romeo and Juiliet story. This was favortie book by far, I'm interested to see what Gordon Korman will do next.

Son of the Mob - keeper
By dsl
Vince Luca is a 17 year-old student who just wants to live the common high school life. Chasing girls, playing football, and other "normal" things are what he aspires to. However, Vince is in a rather precarious situation. His father is a mob boss and Vince wants to have nothing to do with it. His entire family with the exception of his mother, believes that one day he will come around and accept his position. Vince suffers the classic struggle of a protagonist trying to escape his family's reputation and image. However, Vince ends up right where he didn't want to be, posed by the F.B.I. as a loan-shark for his father's business.
The book "Son Of The Mob" is the perfect blend of something which, is very serious (mob-affiliation), and applying it to highschool life, something almost all teens can relate to. It is comedic excellence and had me yelling, gripped, and shaking my head at the misfortune and unexpected turns that Vince Luca takes. At every moment, Gordon Korman throws in another piece of the plot to thicken and enrich the book. Not deep by any standards, this book does have an amazing correlation to Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet." Vince and Kendra, being the "star-crossed lovers," and their families of completely opposite backgrounds makes the book suspenseful and comical.

A fun, light read
By Matt Hetling
Gordon Korman books are always a fun read, and Son of the Mob is no different.

With a plotline that might best be described as "Sopranos-lite," Korman gives us Vince, a 17 year old hero who is the white sheep of a mafia family, headed by feared crime boss Anthony Luca.

Like other boys his age, Vince is preoccupied with girls, unfair teachers, and homework assignments. Unlike his peers, however, Vince also has to deal with a range of ethical questions related to the criminal activity of his family. He doesn't want to partake in the ill-gotten gains of his family, but everything he wears, eats, and drives is tainted with mob-money.

Things get sticky when Vince finds out that the girl he's dating is the daughter of the FBI agent assigned to build a case against his father. To make matters worse, Vince decides to take a hand in his father's activities. In an attempt to prevent violence, Vince takes responsibility for some of the debts owed to his father by some lowlife thugs, but that puts him in the position of trying to collect money himself.

This is the first Korman book that I've read for about ten years or so, and I have to admit I was a little disappointed when I measure this up against some of his early works, such as "No Coins Please" and the Bruno and Boots series. Maybe it's just me, but some of the jokes, especially the thick-as-flies mob references, seemed a little over the top.

However, Korman has matured in several ways, and I appreciated that he was able to give a lot of competing plot lines their due space. The only exception to this was a storyline involving an FBI insider somewhere in the ranks of the Mob. This was barely mentioned early, but became the biggest climax at the end.

Korman's writing is always good for a couple of chuckles, and you know that he's not going to get preachy about social issues or anything like that. More than any other author, he reminds me of Robert Asprin, who has a similar sense of humor and a similar knack for showing that people, whether they're mobsters or wizards or what, are all pretty much the same inside.

Prisoners of Geography: Ten Maps That Explain Everything About the World, by Tim Marshall

In the bestselling tradition of Why Nations Fail and The Revenge of Geography, an award-winning journalist uses ten maps of crucial regions to explain the geo-political strategies of the world powers.

All leaders of nations are constrained by geography. Their choices are limited by mountains, rivers, seas, and concrete. To understand world events, news organizations and other authorities often focus on people, ideas, and political movements, but without geography, we never have the full picture. Now, in the relevant and timely Prisoners of Geography, seasoned journalist Tim Marshall examines Russia, China, the USA, Latin America, the Middle East, Africa, Europe, Japan and Korea, and Greenland and the Arctic—their weather, seas, mountains, rivers, deserts, and borders—to provide a context often missing from our political reportage: how the physical characteristics of these countries affect their strengths and vulnerabilities and the decisions made by their leaders.

In ten, up-to-date maps of each region, Marshall explains in clear and engaging prose the complex geo-political strategies of these key parts of the globe. What does it mean that Russia must have a navy, but also has frozen ports six months a year? How does this affect Putin’s treatment of the Ukraine? How is China’s future constrained by its geography? Why will Europe never be united? Why will America never be invaded? Shining a light on the unavoidable physical realities that shape all of our aspirations and endeavors, Prisoners of Geography is the critical guide to one of the major (and most often overlooked) determining factors in world history.

Review
"[Q]uite simply, one of the best books about geopolitics you could imagine: reading it is like having a light shone on your understanding." (The Evening Standard)

"In an ever more complex, chaotic and interlinked world, Prisoners of Geography is a concise and useful primer on geopolitics.” (Newsweek)

"Marshall is excellent on some of the highways and byways of geo-politics." (Financial Times)

"Fans of geography, history and politics (and maps) will be enthralled." (Fort Worth Star-Telegram)

"This is not a book about environmental determinism – the geography of a region is never presented as fatalistic; but it does send a timely reminder that despite technological advances, geography is always there, often forcing the hand of world leaders." (Geographical Magazine)

"Lively and perceptive political and historical analyses are frequent. The chapter on China is excellent; the chapter on Africa combines geography and history in a convincing way; the chapter on Western Europe...is a brilliant narrative of European relations, particularly between France and Germany. The superb chapter on the Middle East makes for a clear indictment of the Sykes–Picot agreements and of their tracing of artificial borders. The chapter on the Arctic is precise and informative ...A very lively, sensible and informative series of country reports in which geography occupies its rightful place along with shrewd historical reminders and political judgments." (Survival: Global Politics and Strategy)

"Marshall's insistence on seeing the world through the lens of geography compels a fresh way of looking at maps—not just as objects for orientation or works of art, but as guideposts to the often thorny relations between nations.” (New York Times Book Review)

"This book is especially timely...Landscapes, rugged or otherwise, and what the land holds in resources, exert their own kind of sway that no one, not even a Putin, can surmount. This book grabbed me because of its enormous relevance to our world today." (Booktrib.com)

“A convincing analysis of Russian geopoliticalthinking....Also makes clear the terrible price the world has had to paybecause European officials decided to create nation-states with borders thatcompletely ignored cultural geography.” (Washington Post)

Prisoners of Geography INTRODUCTION
Vladimir Putin says he is a religious man, a great supporter of the Russian Orthodox Church. If so, he may well go to bed each night, say his prayers, and ask God: “Why didn’t you put some mountains in Ukraine?”

If God had built mountains in Ukraine, then the great expanse of flatland that is the North European Plain would not be such encouraging territory from which to attack Russia repeatedly. As it is, Putin has no choice: he must at least attempt to control the flatlands to the west. So it is with all nations, big or small. The landscape imprisons their leaders, giving them fewer choices and less room to maneuver than you might think. This was true of the Athenian Empire, the Persians, the Babylonians, and before; it was true of every leader seeking high ground from which to protect their tribe.

The land on which we live has always shaped us. It has shaped the wars, the power, politics, and social development of the peoples that now inhabit nearly every part of the earth. Technology may seem to overcome the distances between us in both mental and physical space, but it is easy to forget that the land where we live, work, and raise our children is hugely important and that the choices of those who lead the seven billion inhabitants of this planet will to some degree always be shaped by the rivers, mountains, deserts, lakes, and seas that constrain us all—as they always have.

Overall there is no one geographical factor that is more important than any other. Mountains are no more important than deserts, nor rivers than jungles. In different parts of the planet different geographical features are among the dominant factors in determining what people can and cannot do.

Broadly speaking, geopolitics looks at the ways in which international affairs can be understood through geographical factors: not just the physical landscape—the natural barriers of mountains or connections of river networks, for example—but also climate, demographics, cultural regions, and access to natural resources. Factors such as these can have an important impact on many different aspects of our civilization, from political and military strategy to human social development, including language, trade, and religion.

The physical realities that underpin national and international politics are too often disregarded in both writing about history and in contemporary reporting of world affairs. Geography is clearly a fundamental part of the “why” as well as the “what.” Take, for example, China and India: two massive countries with huge populations that share a very long border but are not politically or culturally aligned. It wouldn’t be surprising if these two giants had fought each other in several wars, but in fact, apart from one monthlong battle in 1962, they never have. Why? Because between them is the highest mountain range in the world, and it is practically impossible to advance large military columns through or over the Himalayas. As technology becomes more sophisticated, of course, ways are emerging of overcoming this obstacle, but the physical barrier remains a deterrent, and so both countries focus their foreign policy on other regions, while keeping a wary eye on each other.

Individual leaders, ideas, technology, and other factors all play a role in shaping events, but they are temporary. Each new generation will still face the physical obstructions created by the Hindu Kush and the Himalayas, the challenges created by the rainy season, and the disadvantages of limited access to natural minerals or food sources.

I first became interested in this subject when covering the wars in the Balkans in the 1990s. I watched close at hand as the leaders of various peoples, be they Serbian, Croat, or Bosniak, deliberately reminded their “tribes” of the ancient divisions and, yes, ancient suspicions in a region crowded with diversity. Once they had pulled the peoples apart, it didn’t take much to then push them against each other.

The River Ibar in Kosovo is a prime example. Ottoman rule over Serbia was cemented by the Battle of Kosovo Polje in 1389, fought near where the Ibar flows through the city of Mitrovica. Over the following centuries the Serb population began to withdraw behind the Ibar as Muslim Albanians gradually descended from the mountainous Malesija region into Kosovo, where they became a majority by the mid-eighteenth century. Fast-forward to the twentieth century and there was still a clear ethnic-religious division roughly marked by the river. Then in 1999, battered by NATO from the air and the Kosovo Liberation Army on the ground, the Yugoslav (Serbian) military retreated across the Ibar, quickly followed by most of the remaining Serb population. The river became the de facto border of what some countries now recognize as the independent state of Kosovo.

Mitrovica was also where the advancing NATO ground forces came to a halt. During the three-month war, there had been veiled threats that NATO intended to invade all of Serbia. In truth, the restraints of both geography and politics meant the NATO leaders never really had that option. Hungary had made it clear that it would not allow an invasion from its territory, as it feared reprisals against the 350,000 ethnic Hungarians in northern Serbia. The alternative was an invasion from the south, which would have gotten them to the Ibar in double-quick time; but NATO would then have faced the mountains above them.

I was working with a team of Serbs in Belgrade at the time and asked what would happen if NATO came: “We will put our cameras down, Tim, and pick up guns” was the response. They were liberal Serbs, good friends of mine and opposed to their government, but they still pulled out the maps and showed me where the Serbs would defend their territory in the mountains, and where NATO would grind to a halt. It was some relief to be given a geography lesson in why NATO’s choices were more limited than the Brussels PR machine made public.

An understanding of how crucial the physical landscape was in reporting news in the Balkans stood me in good stead in the years that followed. For example, in 2001, a few weeks after 9/11, I saw a demonstration of how, even with today’s modern technology, climate still dictates the military possibilities of even the world’s most powerful armies. I was in northern Afghanistan, having crossed the border river from Tajikistan on a raft, in order to link up with the Northern Alliance (NA) troops who were fighting the Taliban.

The American fighter jets and bombers were already overhead, pounding Taliban and al-Qaeda positions on the cold, dusty plains and hills east of Mazar-e-Sharif in order to pave the way for the advance on Kabul. After a few weeks it was obvious that the NA were gearing up to move south. And then the world changed color.

The most intense sandstorm I have ever experienced blew in, turning everything a mustard-yellow color. At the height of the storm you couldn’t see more than a few yards ahead of you, and the only thing clear was that the Americans’ satellite technology, at the cutting edge of science, was helpless, blind in the face of the climate of this wild land. Everyone, from President Bush and the Joint Chiefs of Staff to the NA troops on the ground, just had to wait. Then it rained and the sand that had settled on everything turned into mud. The rain came down so hard that the baked-mud huts we were living in looked as if they were melting. Again it was clear that the move south was on hold until geography finished having its say. The rules of geography, which Hannibal, Sun Tzu, and Alexander the Great all knew, still apply to today’s leaders.

More recently, in 2012, I was given another lesson in geostrategy: As Syria descended into full-blown civil war, I was standing on a Syrian hilltop overlooking a valley south of the city of Hama and saw a hamlet burning in the distance. Syrian friends pointed out a much larger village about a mile away, from where they said the attack had come. They then explained that if one side could push enough people from the other faction out of the valley, then the valley could be joined onto other land that led to the country’s only motorway, and as such would be useful in carving out a piece of contiguous, viable territory that one day could be used to create a mini-statelet if Syria could not be put back together again. Where before I saw only a burning hamlet, I could now see its strategic importance and understand how political realities are shaped by the most basic physical realities.

Geopolitics affects every country, whether at war, as in the examples above, or at peace. There will be instances in every region you can name. In these pages I cannot explore each one: Canada, Australia, and Indonesia, among others, get no more than a brief mention, although a whole book could be devoted to Australia alone and the ways in which its geography has shaped its connections with other parts of the world, both physically and culturally. Instead I have focused on the powers and regions that best illustrate the key points of the book, covering the legacy of geopolitics from the past (nation-forming); the most pressing situations we face today (the troubles in Ukraine, the expanding influence of China); and looking to the future (growing competition in the Arctic).

In Russia we see the influence of the Arctic, and how it limits Russia’s ability to be a truly global power. In China we see the limitations of power without a global navy. The chapter on the United States illustrates how shrewd decisions to expand its territory in key regions allowed it to achieve its modern destiny as a two-ocean superpower. Europe shows us the value of flatland and navigable rivers in connecting regions and producing a culture able to kick-start the modern world, while Africa is a prime example of the effects of isolation.

The chapter on the Middle East demonstrates why drawing lines on maps while disregarding the topography and, equally important, the geographical cultures in a given area is a recipe for trouble. We will continue to witness that trouble this century. The same theme surfaces in the chapters on Africa and India/Pakistan. The colonial powers used ink to draw lines that bore no relation to the physical realities of the region, and created some of the most artificial borders the world has seen. In the Middle East, an attempt is now being made to redraw them in blood.

Very different from the examples of Kosovo or Syria are Japan and Korea, in that they are mostly ethnically homogenous. But they have other problems: Japan is an island nation devoid of natural resources, while the division of the Koreas is a problem still waiting to be solved. Meanwhile, Latin America is an anomaly. In its far south it is so cut off from the outside world that global trading is difficult, and its internal geography is a barrier to creating a trading bloc as successful as the EU.

Finally, we come to one of the most uninhabitable places on earth—the Arctic. For most of history, humans have ignored it, but in the twentieth century we found energy there, and twenty-first-century diplomacy will determine who owns—and sells—that resource.

Seeing geography as a decisive factor in the course of human history can be construed as a bleak view of the world, which is why it is disliked in some intellectual circles. It suggests that nature is more powerful than man and that we can go only so far in determining our own fate. However, other factors clearly have an influence on events, too. Any sensible person can see that technology is now bending the iron rules of geography. It has found ways over, under, or through some of the barriers. The Americans can now fly a plane all the way from Missouri to Mosul on a bombing mission without needing to land to refuel. That, along with their great aircraft carrier battle groups, means they no longer absolutely have to have an ally or a colony in order to extend their global reach around the world. Of course, if they do have an air base on the island of Diego Garcia, or permanent access to the port in Bahrain, then they have more options; but it is less essential.

So airpower has changed the rules, as, in a different way, has the Internet. But geography, and the history of how nations have established themselves within that geography, remains crucial to our understanding of the world today and to our future.

The conflict in Iraq and Syria is rooted in colonial powers ignoring the rules of geography, whereas the Chinese occupation of Tibet is rooted in obeying them. America’s global foreign policy is dictated by them, and even the power projection of the last superpower standing can only mitigate the rules that nature, or God, handed down.

What are those rules? The place to begin is in the land where power is hard to defend, and so for centuries its leaders have compensated by pushing outward. It is the land without mountains to its west: Russia.

The author sets out with a big challenge ahead of him, namely to explain the geo-political strategies of the world powers with ten maps.

Geography cannot be changed. Political boundaries can be, usually with the aid of the army. Some political groupings may be formed by more peaceable means. Often peace is threatened by geography, however, a small strip of land or sea can be a tinderbox between nations.

In this interesting book, the author looks at Russia, China, the USA, Latin America, the Middle East, Africa, Europe, Japan and Korea, and Greenland and the Arctic and considers how their physical geography can affect their strengths and vulnerabilities and the decisions made by their leaders. All of this is achieved in a fairly neutral tone that seeks to look at the facts, rather than pushing a particular line or agenda, delivering surprising analysis at times. Sometimes we do not know the world as well as we think we might.

Many questions are asked. Some deep and meaningful, others more abstract yet interesting nonetheless. This is one of those books that you probably don’t go out looking for, but should you stumble across it or receive it as a gift you will be very happy with it. Geography, politics and elements of the news cycle can be brought to life with this book. You just need an open mind.

Christmas is coming. This could be an ideal book for the curious reader. You might need two copies though, as if you start leafing through it there’s a big danger you will be hooked.

How geography explains much of what happens on Planet Earth
By James Denny
Using physical geography with a bit of climatology thrown in, author Tim Marshall explains Planet Earth's geo-politics in a refreshing and stimulating way. His structure is to lay out ten maps of continents and countries and to delve into the specifics of oceans, rivers, mountains, deserts and climate to explain how some countries have expanded greatly (Russia), others not at all (Korea) and why certain places in the world lend themselves to strife and conflict, while others lead to greater economic opportunity, cooperation, trade and stability.

"Prisoners of Geography" is a bold work. Some readers may think that Marshall's approach is reductionist in a 19th century sort of way, that everything can be explained by geo-determinism. I found it quite the opposite. Marshall's analysis of Japan and Korea (one of his ten maps) and of India and Pakistan (another of the ten) explain how in these situations, two different nation-states and cultures butt-up against each other and unfortunately are stuck in a permanent dance pose that neither wants to be in.

His map of Africa with its current political boundaries resulted when six 19th century European colonial powers in the second "Great Game," arbitrarily drew lines on a map. A century later, the post-WWII drive to independence among these weak colonies resulted in several dozen new nation states most of which lack a well-defined cultural, linguistic and religious, as well as a primary tribal or ethnic identity. Most of these new African nations are destined to continue as weak nation-states for the immediate and foreseeable future, "prisoners of geography" as Marshall would say. They are highly vulnerable to being led by despotic leaders, African "Big Men" types who through force of persona, if not outright corruption and abuse somehow manage to stay in power to rule a disparate lot.

Marshall uses geography to explain why the United States is highly defensible while Russia despite its vast size is not. He explains why China's Han people have for centuries been dominating and absorbing minorities on their periphery. China's most recent effort to occupy and neutralize Tibet is but the latest chapter in a long history of occupation and take-over.

In other examples, Marshall explains why Iran is highly defensible as a state while neighboring Iraq is not.

Perhaps the map that came as the biggest surprise was Marshall's last map, his map of the Arctic. The Arctic region is one of the last great, uncharted and unoccupied areas on the planet. The Arctic lacks a coherent strategy for settlement, exploitation of resources, nautical travel and military defense. (Marshall explains that in contrast, the Antarctic has an abiding agreement in force for a number of decades making it available to a wide variety of nations, primarily for scientific research). The Arctic region, however, borders on five modern nation-states which have big differences in opinion as to how the region should be managed, "who owns what" and because of its strategic significance to many different nations and spheres of influence, is a region very much in play.

Delve into the world of geopolitics.
By Paul Tognetti
Wealth, Poverty and Politics: An International PerspectiveRecently, I read Thomas Sowell’s outstanding new book “Wealth, Poverty and Politics: An International Perspective” in which the author argues passionately and convincingly that it is geography and not the so-called evils of capitalism that accounts for much of the economic disparity in the world today. Thus, when I spotted Tim Marshall’s new book “Prisoners of Geography: Ten Maps That Explain Everything About the World” I decided to take my investigation into this subject to a whole other level. This definitely proved to be time very well spent.

According to some in the media with a political ax to grind, we in the developed world are something akin to vultures swooping down intent on robbing third world nations of their wealth and natural resources. This is the constant drumbeat. Rarely do the reporters who cobble together these stories take the time to consider why these countries have been unable to mine or extract these assets themselves. What you will discover in this book is that it all too often boils down to impediments caused by geography. Economic development in Africa has been stymied for centuries by a number of factors such as a lack of deepwater harbors, rivers that are simply not navigable and tropical diseases. It is much the same story in Latin America where mountainous terrain, jungles and a lack of deep harbors restrain development. You will discover that save for certain geographic obstacles the nation of Brazil would already be an economic powerhouse.

Meanwhile, geography has implications for rich and powerful nations as well. Russian foreign policy is necessarily shaped by the fact that the country still lacks a warm water port. In the chapter on “The Middle East” we discover that many of these countries were arbitrarily created by Europeans drawing lines on maps of faraway places that they knew precious little about. The implications of these actions are far-reaching and continue to be felt many decades later.

For those who are sincerely interested in educating themselves about these monumentally important issues then “Prisoners of Geography: Ten Maps That Explain Everything About the World” would be an excellent place to start. I thought that the 10 regional maps presented at the beginning of each chapter were extremely helpful in understanding the issues being discussed by Tim Marshall and I found myself referring to them frequently. What a neat idea! This is a must read for those interested in economics, geography and foreign policy. Highly recommended!

A gem on many levels
By John H. Hwung
This book is a gem on many levels:

1) On the history and development of spy planes: This has been covered by many previous reviews on this book. So, I won't write more here.

2) On creativity: There are a lot of books on creativity. Many of them are trivial. Most are written by people who themselves have not design or deliver noteworthy innovations that are of national or international significance. This book is different. It is written by a person who has contributed innovations at, and even run Skunk Works, which has delivered innovation after innovation that are internationally significant.

How does a smart scientist or engineer determine if an organization is a place of major technical inventions? This book tells you the characteristics of such organizations. How do you organize and run a place that can deliver breakthrough innovations at bargain prices? This book gives you the principles on how to do it correctly.

3) On cold war and patriotism: This book gives you a glimpse into the cold war, and the hair-triggering tension of nuclear war between U.S. and the ex-Soviet Union. Also, it shows the patriotism among the U.S. government officials, top military echelons, pilots, and civilian scientists and engineers. Even more, it shows how Skunk Works' technologies tipped the power towards the U.S.

4) On biographies: This book is a partial and vivid biography of both Kelly Johnson and Ben Rich. Their personal traits, both strengths and flaws, are clearly described.

5) On Navy's major shortcomings: Kelly's fifteenth principle of rather to starve than to deal with the Navy is nothing short of astonishment. The descriptions of the Navy's sticking to Aegis frigate rather than Skunk Works' SWATH ship, and preferring traditional submarines rather than stealth submarines are so, so astounding. Right now, U.S. has the world's greatest naval power. U.S. naval power could have been much, much greater and the cost to the tax payers could have been much, much lower cost if the Navy had adopted stealth technologies from Skunk Works.

6) On the harmful effects of government interferences, wastes and bureaucratic madness: Reading this book and you can understand why we spend so much in defense and get so little in return.

Overall, this book deserves more than 5 stars. It should be read by CEOs and CTOs (Chief Technology Officer) of every major and high tech corporation looking for ways to leapfrog the competitions. It should be read by every Secretary of Defense and officers in high military echelons looking for military technologies to surpass other nations. It should be read by every bright scientists and engineers looking for a place to work where major innovations can be produced. It should be read by every science and engineering professors on how to educate future generations of science and engineering students that can create and innovate.

Awesome aerospace/military history
By D. J Najarian
Skunk works is the true story behind the coolest, high tech, top secret, aerospace engineering division operated by the Lockheed Martin corporation. Forged by legendary U. Michigan alumnus Kelly Johnson, the Skunk Works has created the coolest planes of recent memory, including the SR-71 Blackbird (currently visible on the flight deck of the Intrepid Aircraft Carrier in NYC), the F117A Stealth Fighter, and the U2 spy plane. The F22 Raptor and the Joint Strike Fighter are also creations of the Skunk Works, but are not covered in this autobiography written by the successor to Kelly Johnson, Ben Rich.
This quick read is well worth your while for a couple of reasons. First, the stories behind the creation of these planes is very interesting. For example, the Skunk Works engineers found the mathematical key to the stealth design buried within an obscure physics journal originally published in Russian. Oddly, the Russians military never capitalized on the principle, despite urgings from the article's Russian author. Furthermore, when the stealth plane was first designed and kept in a secret hanger infested with some bats, the bats couldn't detect the plane with their "sonar-like" sense, and they ended up crashing into it.
The book also makes for excellent military and therefore world history. Accomplishments of the U2 spy plane and the F117-A Stealth Fighter are covered in depth and literally changed the course of world events during the Cold War, the Vietnam War, the Korean War, the Gulf War, and other skirmishes. Many interesting, behind the scenes (formerly classified?) missions are also revealed in this book. Ben Rich also speculates on the future types of planes currently on the minds of engineers at the Skunk Works, and the implications will change how wars are fought in the future.
For readers who liked this book, NOVA recently published a video on the creation of the Joint Strike Fighter, a contract fought over between the Skunk Works and the Phantom Works of Boeing. These do all fighters are amazing, and this video is definately worth watching for those who enjoyed "Skunk Works."

Engrossing true story
By J. Turner
I'm not particularly an avid reader of military history books or contemporary history books in general, but after a coworker described this book, curiosity got the better of me and I bought it. I'm glad I did.
Ben R. Rich joined the legendary 'Skunk Works' as a young engineer, worked on some of the most secretive military projects in recent history, and later ended up taking over management of Skunk Works. As a result, perhaps no one else in the world has as much first hand knowledge of these projects, and no one else is better positioned to chronicle some of America's military crown jewels.
Rich (and Janos) have crafted a unique book that gives Ben Rich story, with interesting first hand accounts from pilots, air force personnel, and highly placed government officials. Rich covers the struggles encountered while building various classified aircraft: the U2, SR-71 BlackBird, the stealth fighter, the stealth boat, among others. He also lightly delves into the darker side of the defense industry: politics, waste, and bureaucracy.
An amazing read, and highly recommended.
