Solid thermo book w/ some application

This book is well written and explains thermo science in detail. Not only does this book teach the theory; it teaches how to apply the theory in the design of real chemical systems. This book is tough sleding...although not as tough as Sandler's book on thermo, which is also, in my opinion, and better book. I
My only real dislike of this book is the formating...I read this book for long hours at a time in my thermo class (it was one of three books required for the course) and I must say the text and page layout of the book really bothered me.

A year later I am still using this book as a reference

First, I should say that I was a student of Dr. Brown's and took his class in which we used this book as the text. But, I still find the information contained in this book useful even now that I am no longer a student. I found this area of psychology very applicable to my daily life, and I am surprised that this is the only book on self-psychology available on the market. He writes in a clear, entertaining manner and he makes the concepts easy to understand. This is a valuable reference to me, and I am certain it will continue to be as I enter graduate study in psychology.

Jonathon Brown has created a book that works in both the home and the classroom. Written as a text for upper-level psychology classes in self-psychology, it manages to span the usual gap between 'informative' and 'engaging.' An excellent read for the interested layperson and an invaluable resource for the academic. Bravo!

Clear, yet dry.

I took this class (i.e., self), and is was really nice, I learned a lot about myself. Like I mentioned it is dry and I find some disconnect in the fifth and sixth chapters, but overall it does a good job of communicating the aspects of self. Remember future class takers, self is not personality it is identity with a hint of personality and a dash of motivation. lol

About the Author
K.A. Stroud formerly was a professor in the Department of Mathematics at Lanchester Polytechnic (now Coventry University) in the United Kingdom. He is also the lead author of the very popular Engineering Mathematics and Advanced Engineering Mathematics, which are also available from Industrial Press.

Dexter J. Booth teaches in the United Kingdom at the University of Huddersfield. He is the author of several mathematics books, including with Stroud the latest editions of Engineering Mathematics and Advanced Engineering Mathematics.

limited, but excellent within those limitations. Good for the how, not the why

Ok, this is not a beginners book. You NEED to know your algebra, trig relations, and calculus very well before you start on this, in particular differentiaion of log, exponential, trigonometric functions, implicit differentiation, integration by parts and substitution. Also good if your up on partial fractions, complex numbers and of course, your algebra. There is not attempt at revision of these ocncepts in the book and no appendices containing it. You'll probably need a table of integrals handy too when you work through it on the questions.

Ok, that aside, the book is purely about solving ODE's. It's contents include

program 1: First order Differential Equations

program 2: Second order differential equations

program 3: series 1

program 4: series 2

program 5: power series solutions of ODEs

program 6: Introdction to laplace trasnforms

program 7: Laplace transforms 2

program 8: laplace transforms 3

program 9: Z transforms

program 10: Matrix Algebra

program 11: Numerical solutions of ODEs

OK, the book has all the answers (not worked) to all of the questions. The questions are plentiful and take the form of review exercises (for each sub program), Test Exercises for each program and Further Exercises for each program. As far as I can tell there are no errors in the answers. I will warn you though: some of the further exercises are difficult! (we talking: multiple change of variable substitutions, partial fractions followed by integration by parts all to solve one ode!).

The teaching of the methods (algorithms if you prefer) is rquite strong with multiple fully worked examples for each concept and then questions for you to answer followed by fully worked solutions for those answers so you can see where you may have gone wrong. However strong this pedagogy is, there is little actual motivation for the work. There is no connection to applying ODE's to the real world. Also, some of the proofs are not what you would could rigorous, which will annoy the math students and please the engineers.

I suggest ODEs by Tennenbaum and Pollard (isbn: 0486649407) if you want motivation and just about every possible application of ODEs to real situations, in addition to this book. Do this book first perhaps to get the methods (algorithms) down and then go to Tennenbaum and Pollard for applying ODEs and filling in the gaps that this book leaves.

For somebody who just needs to know how, this is a good book: if you can't learn it from this book, then you probably aren't gonna get it without some help from a prof/ lecturer. if you want to know why, then it isn't so great (hence the loss ot stars).

Not a bad place to start learning differential equations.

This textbook is a relatively good place for self learners to begin their study of differential equations. The method used takes you step by step through the many worked out examples. The degree of calculus algebra, trig, and calculus needed is not overwhelming. A one year course in calculus is more than adequate. The book would receive a 5 rating if all the test problems and further problems were fully worked out. It is also lacking in first and second order word problems. The best answer for this is to find a copy of the Schaum's Solved Problems in Differential Equations which is out of print. What a shame. It would be wonderful if Schaum's updated and reprinted it. There is no better way to learn this material than to learn the fundamentals, try solving the problems, and then check against a solved solutions. Stroud's Programs 3-5 on series and Programs 6-8 on LaPlace Transforms are very well done. Program 10 on matrix algebra gives you a brief introduction to Linear Algebra including a brief introduction to eigenvalues and vectors. Program 11 on numerical solutions is dated. You will need to find training materials from Maple, Matlab, and Mathematica or other vendors. The Tennenbaum text mentioned in the other review is an excellent standard textbook available from Dover at a very modest price. For the mathematicians out there the derivations and theorems are more thorough as stated. The material in Stroud's programs 1-2 is much more fully covered by Tennenbaum. The issue with Tennenbaum is there are not enough worked out examples. Answers are given for the numerous problems but not worked out. I have not been able to find them solved on line which would be great for self learners like myself. The Dummies Series workbook on Differential Equations is pretty good although there are a couple of errors in the solutions that need to be fixed and the derivation of the LaPlace transform of the sin(x) could be much more straightforward. If you can afford it you can purchase the textbook which accompanies it. They are not a bad place to start and both together cost less than the Stroud text. The Differential Equations DeMystified text has a lot of interesting material in it. However,it is a difficult read and not a good learning tool. There are several standard textbooks on Differetial Equations. They are expensive books.

Guys Get This For Self Teaching & Add Tenenbaum Too!

This book is for the self taught gentleman. If you prefer to teach yourself, or are just not very good in a classroom setting, you know sitting for long hours and just listening... and for most of us guys does it's not why we picked the sciences. No we'd much rather get into it for ourselves! And this book is pretty darn good for that. Why pretty darn good vs. perfect? Well it doesn't really address the "theory" side of things. It just shows you the techniques themselves. For the theory you're probably better off with Ordinary Differential Equations by Morris Tenenbaum. I don't think Tenenbaum shows the step by step process as well as this book does. There were a couple of spots where I had to stop for a second because the next step wasn't quite so clear, but a few minutes of contemplation cleared things up.
But overall, if you really buckle down with this puppy, and keep doing the exercises on paper (not just in your head) it will teach you the essentials of differential equations. Then if you supplement it with Tenenbaum, well you'll be well versed. Better than one of the paper mill students of the modern University - unless your lucky enough to get an enthusiastic professor who also has talent in conveying his knowledge to you.
Lastly the book could use some more examples, but that would drive up the cost even more. Consider checking out Schaum's Differential Equations from your local library or school's library for more problems though. Quick and easy with the solutions in the back.

Short Summary:
This book succeeds as a self teaching guide to techniques, stops short on theory, and could also use a few more example problems, but does have enough to learn the basic idea for each technique.

Excellent book!

I absolutely LOVE every thing that Jane Whitewick puts out. She makes learning Arabic easy and less stressful; especially the grammar! I had an "aha" moment when just thumbing thru her book BEFORE I even bought it on a Arabic grammar issue I had been trying to figure out for 18 months! I have to admit, that Jane's super strong British accent is kinda a distraction when hearing her speak and Mahmoud sounds kinda bizarre talking like a proper English gent sitting down to tea vs. the Arab he is; but after a while, you get over it. She knows how to rock a language and get you to learn it. She has done a recording for Arabic for the Michel Thomas Method and I have to say, because I found out it was her doing the lessons is why I bought it---she really knows her stuff. If you are desiring to learn Arabic with some ease and less stress, then I recommend you searching Amazon and buy all her books.

Good start

I got this book because I wanted to start studying Arabic. It has been a good start because it helps you to say things without really trying to teach you anything complicated. It also teaches you practical vocabulary for common situations. Thus far, I am about half-way through and can already say a good amount in Arabic. The audio CD provides good guidance. However, if one is very interested in proper pronunciation, the man, a native Arabic speaker, has a perfect accent while Jane Wightwick has quite an obvious English accent in Arabic (as far as I know, her intonation is correct, which is the most important thing at this point). However, from the standpoint of an English-speaker, a lot of the sounds in Arabic are quite comparable to those of English and are only subtly different, but those subtle differences play a large role in foreign accents. The two of them split the task of pronouncing the Arabic words, so some audio has the English accent and some doesn't. The games and activities are helpful. This book is a good beginning but does not provide any detailed grammar information. The grammar is very basic, but the point of the book is to help the student start "communicating right away", which it achieves quite well. The book focuses on nouns and adjectives, not really touching on verbs at all (verbs are quite complicated in Arabic and it would not make sense to include them in a beginner's book). Vocabulary is presented in short lists, which is the most effective way to approach vocabulary. As far as reading goes, I would recommend first buying a guide to Arabic handwriting instead of relying on this book to start reading Arabic. I am glad to have found this product.

A wonderful, friendly introduction to arabic

I found this method to be just the right level of challenge for a beginner. The vocabulary words presented are useful and the pace is easy, but quick enough to keep one's focus and the voices of the presenters are warm and friendly.

This set comprising a book and accompanying CD has given me the motivation and the confidence to continue studying Arabic. It's a great way to have a peek into the language, with no emphasis on Islam, as there sometimes is with other methods.

Dr. McGovern, accompanied only by his servant Satan, continued in disguise into Tibet, arriving ultimately after a series of almost incredible hardships in Lhasa itself. He interviewed the Dalai Lama and other officials and functionaries, studied the people and took innumerable photographs. An amazing tale sure to enthrall the reader.

Virtual Visit to Tibet

This book is the story of an incredible journey into Tibet when foreign travel was not permitted and before the Chinese totally brutalized the country. It is a travel log, but the scenes set and the images presented will remain long past the reading of the book. For instance, the description of the Himalayas once the author was on the other side, or the pink salt at the mountain lakes, or how you can stand in shadow and sun and receive frostbite on one leg and sunburn on the other, and many more scenes of this kind. The capstone of the story was his arrival into Lhasa, the description of the city, and meeting the Dhalia Lama.

Fantastic Adventure Travel from the great age of explorers.

This is the true story of the first westerner to enter inner Tibet with the exception of a military expedition. McGovern, turned back at the border, dyes his skin and puts lemon drops in his blue eyes to disguise himself as a porter. Discovered in Lhasa, threatened with execution, he is befriended by the Dalai Lhama. McGovern speaks Tibetan, is a student of Budhism (in fact had been a Buddhist monk), and casts a unique eye on another world. A world that, by the time of Heinrich Harrar, had already changed dramatically.

About the Author
André Darlington has been writing about the cocktail revolution from a front-row barstool for over a decade. He is a long-time contributor to Madison, WI’s alternative weekly, Isthmus, where he has been an award-winning restaurant critic and cocktail columnist. He is a frequent wine and spirits judge in the U. S. and Europe, and, when he encounters a well-stocked bar, cannot resist getting behind the stick.

Tenaya Darlington is a food writer and educator in Philadelphia. By day, she teaches writing at Saint Joseph’s University; by night she pens the cheese blog Madame Fromage (madamefromageblog.com). Her book, The Di Bruno Bros. House of Cheese, may be the first cheese guide to suggest pairing cheese with cocktails. Her writing has also appeared in Cooking Light, Global Traveler, and the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Life Changing and makes a great gift

New addition to my review... This book makes a great gift. I have a few extra copies on hand as a quick grab hostess gift. It's the same price as a bottle of wine but the beautiful pictures, fun snippets of history and great recipes make it far more memorable. It can easily be upsized with a bottle or two of booze or bar supplies.

Now my original review... The New Cocktail Hour is life-changing! There are so many great things about this book, where do I start… Let’s start with the reason I bought this book, the booze! My husband’s idea of a cocktail was pour two finger widths of vodka in a glass. Add Diet Sprite. Toss in some ice. Stir with finger. My go to beverage lived in black box in my fridge. This book is FULL of interesting and delicious cocktails. We are now far more sophisticated when ordering drinks, and hosting guests. We are well on our way to becoming cocktail snobs. I have pulled it out at several dinner parties when a guest has asked about a beverage I am serving. It is an intriguing centerpiece to conversation.
This book is easy to follow, even for a novice. I was a bit intimidated when I first picked it up, because several of the ingredients were unfamiliar. The book has great descriptions and explanations for the less experienced bartender, like, what exactly are bitters.

I also love that food pairings are offered for the drinks. All these years of pairing my boxed wine with food… I am so ashamed of myself.

The most endearing parts of this book are the gorgeous pictures and snippets of history given with each drink and drink era/category. They are very well written, informative, interesting, and often humorous. The Monkey Gland on page 88 is a must read, must try cocktail.
I could list dozens and dozens of other MUST TRY drinks (Sky Juice) and fantastic recipes for more common drinks (the Martini is to die for), but I recommend you buy the book and try them all.

A good book, but not recommended for beginners like me

A good book, but not recommended for beginners like me. I did go to Bartender School about 15 years ago, so I can kind of find what I want. The book is arranged by what was popular for certain time periods, Early Drinks, WWI Cocktails, The Roaring Twenties, and so on. Would have preferred an arrangement by type of Spirt, like: Vodka, Run, Whisky, Gin and so on.

Fun little cocktail book

Love this book - so happy I decided to order it. It's full of a lot of fun information and history on cocktails through the ages and offers a lot of great recipes for all types of drinks for all different occasions. If I had to pick a downside to this book, it's that I wish it included a few more vodka-based drinks but overall it's a great book. Also, the pictures and design of the book are really nice so it's a good book to leave out for display. Overall though this is definitely worth the money.

Coaching to boost your personal presence

Let me preface my comments by pointing out that I have never read a book focused in this arena before. Honestly, I have seen a number of books promoted in a manner similar to Creating Personal Presence and have been turned off simply because they appeared to focus on rudimentary or superficial issues when it came to the idea of becoming a more successful entity in a corporate sense. That being said, I was extremely impressed with both the depth and positive nuance of Creating Personal Presence. I was surprised at how captivated I became with the content of the text and how easy it was to draw correlations between the examples in the book and the realities of my own performance.

I envision the book as a primer in teaching leaders the ability to develop the personal skills required of a leader. I've managed core groups of leadership (in the Army) who are responsible for ensuring the well-being of different aspects of company operations. While I am always blown away by the technical competency of those I've worked with, I find myself constantly having to work with some of my most proficient section leaders in learning how to present themselves properly as a leader as well as how to project authority through their presence. I would love to be able to assign Creating Personal Presence as a resource to assist my management in developing the interpersonal skills that allow them to translate their competence into holistic leadership abilities.

I felt that the material was presented in a manner that was balanced in terms of maintaining a positive and encouraging atmosphere while at the same time demanding improved performance. Booher avoids blame and instead focused on how to develop leadership despite individual circumstances. I enjoyed that the book assumes an amount of personal success on behalf of the reader dodging the ever looming "bootstraps" mentality. I found that by starting from a level at which technical competence was assumed allowed the book to be more inviting. Overall the material had more of a coaching/mentoring feel to it.

I like that the book incorporates the author's research into the field citing the exact nature of specific studies and even including the questions posed to those interviewed. I think these add weight to the ideas presented and clarify the author's authority in the field. The narratives do an excellent job of creating opportunities for personal introspection and add entertainment value to the text. I found myself drawing similarities between my own performance and the characters discussed.

I found that the book addressed a topic that I struggle with both in my actual job and in my Army career... that is learning to convey what I know in a manner that other people flock to. It's one thing to know a field, but it's another to be able to convey that knowledge. The book does a terrific job of explaining presence and why it's important to advance in the work place.

Tips to help perfect your personal presence

While working in the field of education for more than 30 years, I developed an understanding of the importance of personal presence in any presentation. Whether presenting a lesson to a high school Algebra class or trying to persuade administrators and board members to include a new course in the district's curriculum or discussing student issues with a parent--your presence sets the stage. After reading Dianna Booher's new book, Creating Personal Presence: Look, Talk, Think, and Act Like a Leader, I was excited to find such a great resource for improving personal presence. I even think Ms. Booher's book would be a wonderful addition to a required reading list for university students aspiring to become educators.
