These strategies are lifesavers! THE book for teachers trying to keep up with all of the demands on today's educators.

I was fortunate enough to preview "The Together Teacher" and accompanying strategies as a participant in one of Maia's professional development workshops. For teachers, Maia's book is to organization and efficient time management what "Teach Like A Champion" is to instructional strategies. This book is full of bite sized, immediately useful, and highly effective tools. No "first go to the office supply store and spend $200" here. You can read a page or a whole chapter at a time and walk away with something that can be done tomorrow to help you approach your job more efficiently. Maia's writing style helps readers understand which strategies will make the greatest initial impact, while also including strategies to implement if you've already got most systems under control or once you've gotten the big things together.
I like to think of myself as more organized than most (some might say, ahem, Type A), but Maia's book still had plenty of tips to fine tune what was already working for me *without* being preachy, pushing certain materials/products, or making sweeping general suggestions that nobody needs to pay $$ for. Maia does a great job explaining the 'how' and 'why' as well as the 'what' of every strategy, and provides examples of how to adapt a strategy to different situations. The book covers everything from how to manage the deluge of e-mail teachers receive to how to maximize planning periods. I never realized so much could actually get done in the 45 min. my students are at gym, but with Maia's strategies I am spending much less time staring at my "organized" to-do list pretending to be productive, and much more time actually getting things done! Little things that I didn't even realize were wasting my time -- like checking e-mail when I didn't actually have time to process any of it, or looking through 10 different spiral notebooks for one phone number -- I've been able to eliminate, which allows me to spend much more time mentally present with my students and focusing on providing great instruction.
Nobody likes being (or working with) a frazzled teacher. Maia's strategies help me juggle everything without losing my cool or, as Maia puts it, "living in fear of dropped balls". I feel more collected waking up for work each day and have more "me time" because my time is better budgeted. As a result, my students, co-workers, family, and friends are also pretty thankful I've read this book and used these strategies. ;) You won't be disappointed.

Generic, but useful information

I wish I could give this book 3 1/2 stars. The parts of the book that I could use (the CD templates, and some of the text) was easily four star material, but because the information relevant to me was few and far between, I had to go with the three star review. The included CD of templates is helpful, but generic. The actual book contains some good advice, but much of it is geared toward teachers in a charter school environment. Even though I teach students in a public, high school technology center, I was able to find some usable information in this book, it just took more time to locate and isolate it. Overall, I feel that this book is geared to a very specific kind of teacher. If you are a teacher in a charter school and have little to no teaching experience, then this book will probably be invaluable to you. If you teach in a non-charter style school, if you have several years of teaching under your belt, or if you attended a good, comprehensive, teaching/education program, then you will have to adjust the information accordingly. For those of us who have taught for years, good, basic, information is there for us, you just have to dig for it.
